The term "information technology" is usually quite often referred to an entire industry.

In actuality, information technology is the use of computers and software to manage information. In some companies, this is referred to as Management Information Services (or MIS) or simply as Information Services (or IS). The information technology department of a large company would be responsible for storing information, protecting information, processing the information, transmitting the information as necessary, and later retrieving information as necessary. When people hear the words "Information Technology," the first things that come to mind are computers and the Internet. It may also bring up words like "network," "intranet," "server," "firewall," "security," as well as more arcane expressions such as "router," "T-1," "Ethernet," or the mysterious and exotic-sounding "VoIP." However, the term "information technology" is not new and has not always referred to things relating to computer. Information technology is as old as the brain itself, if you think of the brain as an information processor. As far as IT being a science, even that goes back as far as the earliest attempts to communicate and store information. And that is essentially what information technology is: the communication and storage of information, along with the ability to process and make use of the information stored. The history of information technology predates the invention of the modern digital computer by many centuries. Machines for calculating fixed numerical tasks, such as the abacus, have existed since antiquity. Wilhelm Schickard built the first mechanical calculator in 1623. Charles Babbage designed a difference engine in Victorian times, and around 1900 the IBM Corporation sold punch-card machines. However all of these machines were constrained to perform a single task, or at best, some subset of all possible tasks. During the 1940s, as newer and more powerful computing machines were developed, the term computer came to refer to the machines rather than their human predecessors. As it became clear that computers could be used for more than just mathematical calculations, the field of computer

science broadened to study computation in general. Computer science began to be established as a distinct academic discipline in the 1960s, with the creation of the first computer science departments and degree programs. Since practical computers became available, many applications of computing have become distinct areas of study in their own right. In order to perform the complex functions required of information technology departments today, the modern Information Technology Department would use computers, servers, database management systems, and cryptography. The department would be made up of several System Administrators, Database Administrators and at least one Information Technology Manager. The group usually reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). Information technology has a long history and has only recently been associated with the use of computers.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY , ITs scope and Its future Introduction

Information Technology refers to the management and use of the information using computer-based
tools. It can refer to both hardware and software. Mostly, it is the term used to refer to business applications of computer technology rather than scientific applications. Information Technology (IT) can be used potentially in every sector of the economy. Information Technology has been a dynamic sector in many developed economies and India has stood out a s a developing country where IT sector has grown indefinitely . Information Technology jobs in India are the first choice career for the bright brains who are innovative. Hence, IT jobs in India are also booming with increasing demand for information technology professionals.

The IT industry has great scope for people as it provides emp

loyment to technical and non-technical graduates and has the capability to generate huge foreign exchange inflow for India. India exports softwares and services to approximately 95 countries in the world.

Many countries get benefits in terms of labor costs and

business processes. . Many financial institutions are providing funds for the expansion of IT and ITeS businesses. In order to support IT and ITES, the Indian Government is also taking many steps. For example: 1. The Govt. has provided incentives including tax holiday up to 2010 and competitive duty structures. 2. The Govt. is trying to reduce the international communication cost 3. It is providing infrastructure support through organizations such as software technology parks. All these factors collectively create a number of golden opportunities in the IT sector.

A) Future of Information Technology

IT will continue to gain momentum. The immense expansion in networking technologies is expected to continue into the next decade also. IT will bring about an improvement in the quality of life as it impacts on global competitiveness. Technologies that are emerging are Data Warehousing and Data Mining. They involve collecting data in normal research. Software services that are being used will go a long way.

Future Estimates
* Annual revenue estimated for the industry is US$87 billion * Software and Services will contribute over 7.5% of the overall GDP growth of India. * IT exports will constitute 35% of the total exports of India * There will be 2.2 million jobs in IT sector * IT industry will attract FDI of US$ 4-5 billion * Market capitalization of IT shares will be approximately US $225 billion.

B) Difference between CS/IT?

We are often asked, What is the difference between Information Technology and

Computer Science?
Computer Science is the science of computers while Information Technology may or may not use computers. CS helps you better understand how computers solve problems. Abstract ideas are at the heart of CS.Understanding how technology can best meet the Information management needs of an organization is the heart of IT. An adaptable Computer Scientist should not find it difficult to migrate to the field of IT by learning more about the technology. An IT professional on the other hand, will have to go through CS training in order to be a good computer scientist.CS is about understanding concepts, whereas IT is about knowing more facts.CS is the study of computer's design and operation. But IT is the use of the computer for a specific purpose without knowing the details of how the computer is carrying on all these tasks. CS is a part of IT. CS is generally responsible of building the tools used in IT, where as IT technicians are responsible of using these tools to make real world applications.CS refers to the science of computers - which includes the design of software ,hardware ,networking etc. IT is the application of Computers towards organizing and efficient retrieval of information Computer Science describes what is the science behind computer.. ho w computer is engineered. include history, present and future of computer. including its application and many things. While IT is some thing different... it is study of technology, describe following things.. 1. How to collect information from various sources.... 2. How to store information in such a way that it can retrieve in a desired manner. 3. How to re-distribute information in such way that it fulfills the requirement.
