Rethink Your Drink

With the rising temperatures comes the perfect opportunity to get outside and have some fun with your family. Butte County is full of great outdoor activities for the summer, such as swimming at Lake Oroville, hiking in upper Bidwell Park, or visiting the farmers markets to stock up on fresh fruits and vegetables. While having fun outdoors this summer it is important to keep your children hydrated. The Network for a Healthy CaliforniaSierra Cascade is asking parents to Rethink Your Drink this summer. According to a November 2010 report from the California Center for Public Health Advocacy, children now drink as much soda as they do milk. Today, 44 percent of toddlers between the ages of 19 months and two years, and 70 percent of children ages 2-5 years old, drink at least one sugar-sweetened beverage every day. Before we hand our children a juice box or a soda this summer, we may want to take a closer look at what is inside, said Patty Mannel, program director for Network for a Healthy CaliforniaSierra Cascade Region. Beverages with added sugar add calories, with little nutrition, that can cause tooth decay and weight gain in children. This weight gain can lead to being overweight and/or obese, which increases the risk of serious health problems like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer. If youre trying to decide what to give your family as a beverage, make sure you do your research and read the label. Check to see how much sugar is added. Sugar can

ATTENTION READERS! be tricky and may be disguised and listed under a different name such as high fructose corn syrup, sucrose, dextrose, molasses, and many more. The amount of sugar in a drink may shock you. A 20-ounce soda contains 17 teaspoons of sugar and a 16-ounce energy drink contains 16 teaspoons of sugar. Alternatively, water is calorie free, fat free, and sugar free! Its important to keep your children hydrated in this warm weather. Water is always the smartest drink choice. If you want to kick it up a notch, try adding a splash of 100% juice to your water, or putting slices of cucumber or oranges for a little flavor. Next time you hand your child a beverage be sure to, Rethink Your Drink, Mannel said. Choose a beverage with little or no added sugars. Making smart drink choices will leave your family feeling happier, healthier and hydrated.

Bookix at the Library

New e-reading technology being made available by the California State Library gives young children an exciting new way to experience books and learn to love reading. Library patrons across the state now have free access at home or at their local libraries to BookFlix, an online e-reading program from Scholastic that combines classic fictional video storybooks with similarly themed nonfiction e-books to make reading exciting for children in grades Pre-K-3. Available via the Butte County Library website, and at splash, BookFlix pairs award-winning video based on some of the best-selling childrens picture books of all time produced by Weston Woods with related nonfiction e-books from the rich libraries of Scholastic. The State Library is excited to support access to Bookflix, which is a great tool for learning and growing reading skills, said Stacey Aldrich, state librarian for California. Designed to provide a constant interactive experience for young users, the unique features of BookFlix include: A read-along option that provides word-by-word highlighting so children can follow along as the fiction video is narrated and the nonfiction e-book is read aloud. Narrated text and definitions of key vocabulary words to support beginning and reluctant readers, as well as English Language Learners; Educational games and activities that encourage children to show what they have learned and to reinforce early reading skills like fluency, vocabulary development and reading comprehension; Biographies and interviews that introduce young readers to their favorite authors; and Safe, age-appropriate web links to encourage children to further explore topics that pique their interest. This service is supported by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian. For more information about this and other Butte County Library programs, contact Kimberlee Wheeler, Butte County Library Outreach Coordinator, at 530-5382569.

Eyecare Helps Avoid Future Health Problems

(StatePoint) Did you know that everyone needs a regular eye exameven someone who doesnt wear glasses? Most people assume an annual eye exam only checks a lens prescription, but your eye doctor is also checking to make sure your eyes are healthy. The eyes are the only unobstructed, non-invasive view of blood vessels in the body, and they can tell a lot about your overall health. Through comprehensive eye exams, eye doctors can see eye conditions like glaucoma and macular degeneration, as well as signs of diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Eye doctors can even identify signs of diabetes up to seven years before a patient would typically show symptoms and be diagnosed by a primary care physician. People are three times more likely to get an eye exam than a routine physical, so eye exams are a great way to identify the early warning signs of many diseases. With healthcare costs skyrocketing, its more important than ever to diagnose and treat medical conditions as soon as possiblebefore they become a true burden on a patients body and wallet, says Jonathan Stein, O.D., a VSP Vision Care provider in Manhattan Beach, Calif. And with diseases as prevalent as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol, regular eye exams become a critical part of managing a patients overall health. One condition an eye doctor checks for during a comprehensive eye exam is diabetic retinopathy. The condition is marked by damage to the blood vessels in the retina and can lead to blindness if not treated early. However, with annual eye examinations and proper follow-up care, 90 percent of all diabetes-related blindness can be prevented. High cholesterol is another condition eye doctors can detect by looking for waxy, yellowish buildup in the blood vessels of the eyes. In fact, 65 percent of time, eyecare providers detect high cholesterol before any other provider, according to a recent study commissioned by VSP Vision Care, the nations largest not-for-profit vision benefits company. By getting annual comprehensive eye exams, families and individuals alike can save hundreds if not thousands of dollars on medical costs. Proper preventive care can help avoid costly medical procedures in the future. Even more money can be saved by avoiding medical supplies and medications, time off work and potentially higher-risk insurance premiums for advanced chronic conditions. For more information on the benefit of eye exams and their role in overall health, visit Remember, scheduling eye exams is a relatively easy way to protect your familys vision and health.

Crafter at Festival for 13 years

The Berry Creek Berry Festival started in 1998 as a community event to celebrate our most prolific wild vine - the blackberry. The festival has grown from local church choirs and history talkers who described Berry Creek places and personalities to become a major North State event. Its time again for another day of family fun and free music in Berry Creek at the 13th Annual Berry Creek Berry Festival. Well have Jim Halsey and the Night Hawks, Lee Side Riders and Berry Creeks own Billy Bear performing your favorites on our tree and net shaded stage. There will be over 60 booths of crafters and food vendors as well as information booths. The Berry Festival committee has worked diligently to select only the most talented crafters of jewelry, stained glass, clothing, lavender, berry and assorted jams, toys and other handmade items at reason-

Crafters at the Festival

Child-friendly activities are a part of our program of events for the entire family at the Berry Creek Grange on Bald Rock Road. Kids love the bounce house, pony rides, craft center and face-painting set up especially for them. The Foothill Art Associations show and sale, a pie-eating contest and those famous berry pies, which always sell out so early, guarantee a day of family fun in the foothills!

Much of the increased seasonal cost of gas can be offset by adjusting driving habits and implementing a preventative maintenance plan, says Rich White, Executive Director of the Car Care Council, which is offering these tips:. Properly tuning your car improves gas mileage by an average of 4 percent. Keep tires properly inflated for another 3 percent. Replacing dirty spark plugs can reduce mileage by two miles per gallon. Change oil regularly and gain another mile per gallon. Driving behavior also impacts fuel efficiency, so observe the speed limit and avoid excessive idling, along with quick starts and stops.

How to Tackle Kitchen Upgrades

(StatePoint) For many, a high-use area like the kitchen is always a priority when thinking about home upgrades. But how does one renovate effectively and inexpensively? The key is deciding what you need to live in the room and organizing the redesign in phases, say the experts at the American Institute of Architects.

Great Summer Reads To Beat Those Dog Days

(StatePoint) Looking for some great summer reading to help get you through the dog days of the season? Why not catch up on American classics you might have missed in your youth. The long sunny days are great for lounging and meandering through some American classics, many of which enjoy a controversial history that makes them all the more worth exploring. The Civil War Historic and huge, Shelby Footes three-volume history of the Civil War is a must for American history buffs. Focused on the military campaigns, The Civil War: A Narrative was published between 1958 and 1974. Yet, it has been criticized in recent years for its neglect of political and social factors in the war, particularly slavery. This year, in honor of the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War, the complete set has been reissued with commentary by Jon Meacham, a Pulitzer-prize winning author himself. But if any amount of reading about the Civil War seems dry, check out Ken Burnss PBS documentary, The Civil War, which relies heavily on Footes research. Atlas Shrugged More than 50 years after Atlas Shrugged debuted as a New York Times bestselling novel, it has made the bestseller lists again this year, bringing total sales to over seven million copies. And with the recent release of a movie of the same name, conservative and liberals across the country are engaging in spirited debates over the writings of Ayn Rand, a controversial philosopher who espoused individualism over collective interest. Atlas Shrugged is an interesting and compelling story today, says David Kelley, president and founder of The Atlas Society, a nonprofit organization based on Rands teachings about Objectivism and capitalism. It provides incredible parallels with our current state of affairs. Whether you agree or disagree with Rands worldview, her work is a must-read for anyone interested in the political and economic history and future of America. Her books have sold a cumulative 25 million copies and even sparked a social movement focused on the championing of personal liberty and entrepreneurialism. For more information, visit To Kill A Mockingbird Celebrated and banned, Harper Lees only published novel is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Loosely based on an event in Lees own hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, the book is a coming-of-age novel narrated by a young white girl named Scout as she watches the trial of a falsely accused African American man, defended by her father Atticus. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, but has also been banned by schools for use of profanity and frank discussion of race. Yet the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Duvall met with critical acclaim. Through controversy and poetry, history and plot, these works continue to influence public debate in America. Isnt it time you got in on the conversation?

Fun Ways To Celebrate Birthdays

(StatePoint) Youve shopped, clicked and searched for the perfect birthday gift, but still have no idea what to buy. Not to worry. Finding a gift even the most hard-toshop-for friend will love is easy if you get creative. Birthdays are a time to feel special, says Amy Myers, vice president of creative services at the national gift retailer, Things Remembered. The best gifts are personalized in a way that speaks to each persons uniqueness or your relationship with one another. Here are some tips for finding the right gifts for upcoming birthdays: Recall Small Talk Whats going on in their lives? What are their accomplishments, life changes or aspirations? Recalling dropped hints or recent conversations can help you choose gifts that have personal meaning. An aspiring writer might appreciate an engraved journal to encourage new passions. A wanderlust traveler would love a travel clock or digital photo keychain to capture far-off memories. The friend who loves volunteering might like a day off her feet. Hire a housecleaning service or handyman to complete unfinished household chores. Commemorate Memorable Occasions If he or she is celebrating a milestone birthday, commemorate it with a gift that lasts beyond the big event. Think about timeless classics -- a pocket watch for him or a piggy bank for the little one often become cherished heirlooms. Think about the occasion, Myers says. Is it her first birthday since becoming a mom? Or first as homeowner? If gifts touch that milestone, theyll always be viewed with a smile. Charm bracelets are also great ways to celebrate special memories. For example, Things Remembered sells engravable charms, such as a birthday cake or birthstone to truly personalize the gift. Celebrate Your Relationship The relationship you share has been built on years of experiences together. Whether you celebrate your loved ones birthday with a trip to a museum or a party at an arcade, gifts that celebrate special moments youve shared together will make the memory last. Gather photos and get creative in your presentation. Keepsakes come in all shapes and sizes. Create a display board with fabric, ribbon and buttons to hold photographs. Or, gifts like a photo bookmark are both practical and meaningful. Do Something Unexpected Birthday cakes and parties are timehonored traditions, but an element of surprise makes the special day even more memorable. Take a vacation day, let your child stay home from school, or have the office book your spouses calendar and surprise him with a day off. Try something adventurous like whitewater rafting. Or make a birthday last longer by taking a class -- anything from pottery to poetry will do. For more gift ideas, visit Remember, birthdays are meant to indulge. Dont be afraid to think creatively and give gifts that say something.

Gardening with Alex

Alexandra Heath To Be A Gardener
Spend any time at all in a garden and something magical begins to happen: you relax, your mood lightens, things seem brighter and clearer, and you may nd yourself beginning to smile. Once you become a gardener yourself, the garden begins to change you in ways you hadnt even imagined. After many years of gardening, and having tended the garden on my land now for seven years, Im starting to understand what it means to be a gardener. To be a gardener is to be a botanist. In the beginning its enough to sow some seeds and hope they grow, but as you become more successful at getting things to sprout, and grow and mature, you start thinking more about different varieties of the things you grow. You begin to try short-season seeds or lateseason seeds and you notice how each of these responds to the weather. You notice how the plants grow and what their seeds look like. You may even begin to wonder, for instance, why the owers of pennyroyal form little balls around a central stem, and that horehound does the same. Are they members of the same plant family? You develop techniques of cultivation. You learn the Latin names of the plants. You experiment and discover. To be a gardener is to be an entomologist. If you decide to shun pesticides and work with nature to keep your garden healthy, you begin to notice bugs: the friendly ones and the pests. You start to be able to identify the various stages of their growth and learn to act quickly when a pest outbreak looks imminent. You let the tomato hornworm dine on your plants if you notice that the braconid wasp has laid its eggs on the hornworms backthey look like puffed up grains of riceand you wait until the eggs hatch. The larvae feed on the hornworm and many more wasps become available to protect your tomatoes. You delight in the variety of ying things: butteries and moths, dragonies and wasps, bees of all kinds. To be a gardener is to be a believer in miracles. When you take a packet of seeds and look at themreally see them, you wonder how such tiny dried up things could grow into a plant. For example, hold a poppy seed in the palm of your hand. Its no bigger than a speck of pepper, yet it will sprout and grow into a plant that is over four feet tall with exquisite blooms of paper-thin petals in vibrant colors. How does that happen? It looks miraculous, and as you grow as a gardener you begin to trust in the miracles that you see all around you. And not just to trust, but to expect miracles. And then they happen! To be a gardener is to be an optimist. In spite of your best efforts and tenderest care, some plants fail. Sometimes a late frost turns everything from green to icky black. The winds come and knock down the late sunowers and the cornstalks before you can harvest the ears. Seeds dont spout. Pests wipe out a promising crop. But no matter what disaster befalls, the gardener begins again. Knowing that this year, or season, or weather will be different and the harvest will be abundant. Theres something about spring and the beginning of the planting season that inspires hope, and gardeners are full of hope. But mostly, to be a gardener is to be grateful. Grateful for the hot days and the cool ones. Grateful for the sun and the rain, for the wind and turn of the seasons. Grateful most of all for the extraordinary beauty, diversity and generosity of Nature.
