TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY POLICE

Date: August 8, 2011 As is the case at most major U.S. college campuses, bicycles top the list of stolen property each semester at Texas A&M University.

Tips for Theft Prevention

Always lock your bike's frame and wheels with a high-quality, modern U-lock (with a disc/flat key). Remove all detachable items like lights, bags and quick release parts and take them with you. Lock to a bike rack - these are the most secure places.

The following list indicates the locations, dates and descriptions of bicycles stolen during the Summer 2011 semester.

What to do if you see a suspicious person

If you see someone that is suspicious, note the following: o What they are wearing o What they look like (height, build, hair color, skin complexion, etc.) o Where they are o The direction they are heading (if they are moving) o Any vehicles they are using (include type, color, and license plate, if possible) o What they are doing Call the Texas A&M University Police Department at 979-845-2345 as soon as possible so an officer can be sent to check on the person. It is much better to report several people that are suspicious, but turn out to be all right, than to not report anyone out of fear of embarrassment.

More Tips

Record your bike's serial number. Take a photo of you and your unlocked bike. Keep the receipt. All will help you identify the bike. (*Without a serial number or owner applied number it is unlikely that your bike will be recovered!) Engrave an owner applied number (e.g., your drivers license number) on the frame. Always lock your bike, even if you're just leaving it for a moment. Always lock through the frame and a wheel. Add a cable, cable lock, or second U-lock to lock the second wheel. Consider buying U-locks with theft warranties. Only buy a U-lock with a flat or disc key. Cylindrical keyed locks are more easily picked.
