Small and mid-sized businesses, community organizations and professional associations serving them MUST innovate at faster rates if they are to keep their heads above water - yet alone have a chance to thrive. In other words, to meet new and emerging needs increasing capacity for innovation is needed to better manage both intangible and tangible resources. Here value and inspiration are intangible assets of special interest, interest but attention quality is the common denominator denominator. So when I look at all the conversations and events about innovation it is striking that they are mostly focused on the big guys least known for quality of attention. Most of whom are more interested in controlling innovation to ensure it goes in a prescribed direction. This approach ignores the emotional reality which depends upon inspiration. The secret is that any deeply felt emotion can become the seed of inspiration; your job is to properly cultivate that emotion into its highest expression.

The Maverick (S)hero prevails
Typically discussions about Maverick brands focus on brands built by men like Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin empire. Since my interest is niche games served by maverick players’ big corporate brands serving mass markets are not the focus. Instead it is the sustainability niche that has my attention. Unlike the traditional hero concept, the (s)hero has powers associated with healing the root causes of a crisis, as well as providing immediate rescue. In this context social entrepreneurs are responding to both the short term and long term impact of their enterprises. Each issue of Context magazine (http://issuu.com/contextmagazine/docs/context_magazine__issue_one_v2 ) celebrates them, while the blog (Context magazine blog - http://contextmagazine.tumblr.com ) show cases their products or services. Featured products use of recycled materials is one aspect of how the theme of innovation is woven through each post. Other than corporations, professional associations and smallmid-sized businesses, ‘cause and community’ organizations are often more ideal beneficiaries of innovation. That’s because increasingly they are finding more efficient models for operation based on shared power and collaboration. Traditional organizations have a tendency to be reactionary in their strategic planning. They respond after the fact…after research, and case studies have been produced by other institutions and then turned into policies which were used to distribute funding according to agendas not revealed prior. impact. Worse, it is often after competitors have already made use of the information to get ahead of the game. Is the problem that small enterprises aren’t being served properly, or is the issue that there isn’t enough awareness that capacity for innovation is something that needs to be addressed? Brick and mortar businesses are going to have some major challenges depending on their situation with regional attraction. Collective and individual strategies have to be kicked up a notch as the reality of failed stimulus plans and threats of more economic turmoil are indicators that change is happening. Not only that, but it is becoming increasingly clear that focusing only on the preservation of the status quo is a questionable strategy, at best. Building bridges and finding alternative paths to end goals is where attention is needed. Coming back from disappointments, hopelessness, grief or despair after you have waited for a hero to ride in to your rescue takes persistence and inspired action. For the customers, this means the quest continues. Even if the customer isn’t sure of what is wanted, she is much clearer on what she does not want.
