Gr 12 Portfolio Practical

Conservation of Momentum
Task: Design and conduct an experiment that investigates the law of conservation of momentum. There are certain restrictions based on the equipment that is available and the time that you will have to conduct the experiment.

This Portfolio Practical is titled Investigation into the law of conservation of momentum. IMPORTANT: The ability for a science student to design an experiment is being looked at here - not just their ability to follow given instructions. You will have access to a datalogger with a pair of light gates, a linear air track with 2 gliders and a triple beam balance. You will be working in groups, but each learner must hand in a complete write-up which is entirely their own work. Guidelines: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Understand what is being asked of you (clue, it is on this page in bold type). One restriction is our equipment: regardless of whether the gliders bounce off each other or stick together, one must start in between the light gates and have a velocity of zero. The instructions on how to set-up the dataloggers is provided. Use the rubric as it shows how marks are allocated. Your write-up must be clear and neat. This is a component of your CASS mark for the year, so take care over it.

Good luck.

Instructions for using the DataHarvest datalogger. Step 1 Use Instruction Switch on the datalogger 2 Select Time and Motion 3 Select Speed 4 Select 3 Speeds at A or B 5 Select Interrupt card length that you are using on both trolleys. This must be a 100mm piece of card. 6 Conduct the run. Record results taking care with gate A or B and velocity directions. 7 Select Repeat experiment. Follow instructions from Step 6 as many times as you need. 8 Switch off the datalogger by returning to the Main Menu and selecting Switch off (Use to go back at any stage) Select

Conservation of Momentum
Instructions for using the orange datalogger. Step 1 Use Instruction Press enter. 2 Select Speed Mode. 3 Choose the number of readings. 4 Choose the mask size (preferably 100mm) for both gliders. You will need to press enter a few times. 5 When the display reads G you are ready to proceed. 6 Press G and conduct the run. Record results taking care with gate A or B and velocity directions. 7 Press Display to view the readings. 8 Repeat these steps as many times as you need. Select
