7A: Capacity 7B: Volunteers

Practice 7A: Capacity The goal of the Land Trust is to develop and maintain an excellent organization that enhances our ability to efficiently achieve the land trusts goals. (See Appendix 1B.1, Strategic Plan.) Practice 7B: Volunteers Volunteers are an important component of the Land Trusts work. Volunteers help us care for the land entrusted to our protection, plan and implement community events, and conduct office work and/or fieldwork. The Land Trusts volunteer program shall be implemented according to the Volunteer Program Guidelines adopted November, 2006. (See Appendix 7B.1, Volunteer Program Guidelines.) Potential volunteers are screened using information gathered from the New Volunteer Questionnaire. (See Appendix 7B.2, New Volunteer Questionnaire.)

Practice 7C/7E: Each staff member shall be provided a written job description that details key duties and responsibilities, as well as identifying his or her supervisor. Each employee shall be provided periodic performance reviews in the manner described in the Wood River Land Trust Employee Handbook. (See Appendix 7F.1, Wood River Land Trust Employee Handbook.) Practice 7F: The Land Trust shall maintain written Personnel Policies that conform to federal and state laws, and shall provide a copy to each employee. The Personnel Policies shall be periodically reviewed, and updated if necessary, by the Governance Committee. (See Appendix 7F.1, Wood River Land Trust Employee Handbook.) Practice 7G: The Land Trust strives to provide employees with salaries and benefits that are fair and commensurate with similarly sized nonprofit organizations in the Wood River Valley. An Employee Bonus Incentive Plan has been established to financially reward employees for outstanding performance. (See Appendix 7G.1, Amended and Restated Employee Bonus Incentive Plan.) A Employee Housing Assistance Fund has also been created to assist employees with the high cost of housing in the Wood River Valley. (See Appendix 7G.2, Employee Housing Assistance Fund.) The Governance Committee shall periodically review salaries and benefits to ensure they are fair and equitable.

7H: Consultants

Policy: To ensure that Land Trust and consultant relationships are clearly defined, any contract executed with a consultant shall substantially conform to the contract template prepared by the Governance Committee in December, 2006 and shall be in writing. (See Appendix 7H.1, Consultant Contract.) The Land Trust will provide consultants with a copy of Land Trust Alliance Standards and Practices (Revised 2004) and/or Wood River Land Trust Standards and Practices that are relevant to the consultants work.
