My mother, as perhaps many of yours did as well, used to say "There is nothing I
HAVE to do except pay taxes and die!" Well, that was partially true as those who
don't pay them surely can attest. But alas, there is no joke about the fact that we
must all face death at some time or another.
"Everyone shall taste death. And only on the Day of Resurrection shall you
be paid your wages in full. And whoever is removed away from the fire and
admitted to paradise, this person is indeed successful. The life of this world
is only the enjoyment of deception:" (Quran 3:185),
As a much younger man, I had a conversation with myself that I believe every man
or woman must have at some time or another and that is:
Me: "Look you believe in God right?
Me: And you believe He is Good, All-Knowing, All-Seeing, All-Wise and All-Powerful
Myself: Uh huh.
Me: Then do you think you can just go on in life and He has no right to say what you
can or can't do? I mean do you believe that He just left no guidance for people or no
instructions and just wants us to make up whatever we want about Him and have no
responsibilities towards Him? I mean if you agree with what I said, then does it make
sense that God will just let go all the terrible or good things that people do?
Myself: You ask a lot of questions. But okay I'm with you. But how do I know what
the truth is since everybody claims they are right?
Me: I'm not sure myself (you see at the time of this conversation this writer was not
even a Muslim) but I know there is some truth out there and I also can't believe that
the dirty dogs of this world will get away with it or that good people will always get
the "short end of the stick". Its just not fair that the gangsters and the murderers
and other criminals can get away with it and that good guys finish last and we both
know it happens all the time.
Myself: Okay so you are saying that God wouldn't just let that go if He's a fair god?
Me: Exactly. So I figure we're all going to get our just deserts in the end. You know,
when we die.
Myself: Hereafter stuff?
Me: Yup. I mean come on, you have to figure that even if you live to be a hundred
plus years old its still gonna end and that ain't nothin' compared to the rest of time!
What if you live a life of sickness, poverty, injustice, never getting over, never
getting famous or rich? What about the people you love and depend on who die
sometimes terrible deaths from cancer, getting killed and who even turn on you? You
can be fine today and sick tomorrow. A full wallet now and on the street next week.
Goin' down the street and find a bullet with your name on it! Can you guarantee
where and when you will "kick the bucket"? What's the point of your life if it can go
just like that and nothing to show for it? I know you feel young and strong now and
all that, but we see people "going out" all the time. You also know you hate injustice
and pain and feel good when you do the right thing.
Myself: Okay bro what's the point?
Me: There's something more after this man! I don't buy coming back as another
person, a horse, a dog or a bug! Also do you think that after all your life and all this
consciousness that it will just go black and that's it? I think we have to face
something and it's another stage. It only makes sense: birth, life, death, then
something after. If your time came now would you be ready to face your Maker?
Don't you want to be counted as one of the "good guys" who get justice in the end
and get some satisfaction knowing that the @!#! on this earth will get what's coming
to them? I mean even if you blow it sometimes, don't you at least want to have a
chance at being on the right side? You can just try to pretend it ain't gonna happen
anytime soon like most of our friends but you know there ain't no guarantees don't
Myself: all right... all right. You argue well.
Me: I think we should be open to looking into religion or something man.
Myself: I've been going to the church all my life! Sunday school included! I can't deal
with the "round about" explanations man. I need something clear and
straightforward and people who practice what they preach. You remember the
hypocrites like that preacher's daughter who was...?!
Me: Look, you can't just keep going "headlong and heedless" in life man or just
doing what everybody else is doing! They ain't gonna stand up for you! I think we
should seriously look into this Islam thing and I'm not talking about the cats with the
Myself: I guess there's nothing to lose (except my soul if I keep wandering about
and "half-stepping"), everything to gain (if I find guidance). I've got a brain of my
Me: Nice talking to you.
"Nor does anyone know what it is that he will earn tomorrow: Nor does
anyone know in what land he is to die. Verily with Allah is full knowledge
and Allah is acquainted with all things" (Quran 31: 34).
Well, needless to say, Allah opened my heart to Islam and I found the clarity and
guidance I was looking for and I pray that I die upon this great and wonderful faith,
