Childrens and Youth Sunday School

Its time to start a new year of Sunday School classes! This fall all of our Sunday School classes will be learning about the Bible stories illustrated in our churchs stained glass windows. Come and learn about: Jesus calling the disciples to be fishers of people Creation Praise and Worship Holy Week The Ten Commandments Serving God with your time, talents and money The Presbyterian Symbol (which is full of Bible stories) The crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus The birth of Jesus and the season of Advent

Adult Sunday School

Adult I will begin the fall quarter on September 4. The study provides a survey of Old Testament Wisdom literature (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon) and Jesus teaching in the Gospel according to Matthew. Adult II will continue its study of The Promise of Baptism a study on the subject of baptism and what it means to the Christian.

Wednesday Night Adult Sunday School

If you cant attend an Adult Sunday School class on Sunday mornings, come on Wednesday evenings during Faith Weaver Friends. Jay Dunn will be teaching the same lessons studied in Adult I on Sunday mornings (Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon and Jesus teaching in the Gospel according to Matthew). You may join the children, youth and Faith Weaver Friends volunteers for dinner at 6 p.m. in the Fellowship Room, then attend Sunday School at 7 p.m. or just show up for the lesson at 7 p.m. in the Conference Room. The first Wednesday night lesson will take place on September 21.

Looking Back . . . Celebrating the Past by Sharing Our Stories (We ask all past and current members and friends to submit stories.)
Please take a few minutes to reflect on your entire experience at Denbigh Presbyterian Church. Then, share a story that captures a special moment or event in your life in our church -- an experience that caused you to grow closer to Christ or touched you personally, a time when you felt engaged, alive, and motivated to serve. When did the story take place (approximate time frame is fine)? What happened? Who was involved? Why is this memory special to you? How did it make you feel? Perhaps you experienced spiritual hope, strength, or gratitude. Perhaps the experience challenged you or equipped you for future service. These shared experiences of DPCs past will allow our church to focus on what has strengthened our body of faith and provide us guidance as we embark on our next years of ministry. The Apostle Paul wrote in Philippians 4:8: Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable if anything is excellent or praiseworthy think about such things. Celebration of the Sacrament of the Lords Supper

Please join us in celebrating the Lords Supper on Sunday, September 4, 2011. Please prayerfully prepare for the celebration of the Lords Supper. New Member Class October 2 Are you interested in exploring membership in Denbigh Presbyterian Church? We are having a New Member Class on Sunday, October 2. Please join us for lunch immediately following the worship service. The class will follow and will conclude by not later than 4 p.m. We will provide childcare upon request. If you have questions, please contact Deborah at 877-2048 or via e-mail at Fall Sermon Series Windows of Our Faith Our stained glass windows in the sanctuary illustrate key Bible stories and themes. This fall we will look at each of our stained glass windows and study the messages each contain through our Windows of Our Faith sermon series. Our childrens and youth Sunday School lessons will also correspond with our sermon series. Join us as we explore: Fishers of People Creation Praise and Worship Holy Week The Ten Commandments Pentecost Stewardship The Presbyterian Seal Crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus The Nativity of Jesus Advent 2011 Waiting Our theme for Advent 2011 is Waiting. We will provide Advent devotionals by Henri J.M. Nouwen titled The Lord Is Near. Advent begins November 27. Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Years Day Service Times Christmas Eve Services: 6:30 and 9 p.m. Christmas Day Service: 10:30 a.m. (no Sunday School, casual dress) New Years Day Service: 10:30 a.m. (no Sunday School)

In April, we began volunteering at the new Food Bank location at 2401 Aluminum Drive in Hampton. It is on the corner of Aberdeen and Aluminum Drive in Copeland Industrial Park. It is across from Wendys. Our Prime Timers will volunteer on September 24, 2011. The telephone number at the Food Bank will remain the same: 757-596-7188.

September 2011 S.H.A.R.E. order can be placed the week of September 5-9, 2011. The order will be placed on Monday, September 12 at 10:00 AM and will be distributed in the Narthex area of Denbigh Presbyterian Church on Saturday, September 24 from 7:00-7:30 AM. All orders must be picked up by 7:30 AM. Volunteers cannot be held responsible for orders which are not picked up.

Save-the-Date for this Hole-in-One Event! It is never too early to mark your calendars for an opportunity for camaraderie and relaxation combined with helping others in our community. Our gracious host, ELKS Lodge #315, has announced the date for its Fifth Annual Charity Golf Tournament to benefit the mission of Denbigh United Christian Outreach (DUCO). Plan to join us at the Hamptons Golf Course on Friday, September 30, 2011 at 8:00 AM (Elks contact # 757-877-0171; more info to follow.) Hope to see you on the Green!

The January 2012 Haiti Mission Team is busy fundraising and bonding spiritually through Bible Study. The team is as follows: Sandra Beebe Mason Murawski Deborah Dail Penny Norton Delores Fleming Dale Pennell Patti Hall Megan Spivey Dan Little Shannon Weaver Each team member is responsible for a portion of his/her financial commitment. The team will be having a pumpkin sale, garage sale, art auction and Brunswick stew sale, and other fundraisers. Here are a few ways each of you can help: 1. Prayers 2. Words of encouragement 3. Support the fundraisers. 4. Donate items for the garage sale (please price the items and put them in room 3). Please donate all clothing to another charity. 5. If you would like to financially support a particular team member, please write his or her name and Haiti at the bottom of the check. 6. The Fall Festival At Denbigh Presbyterian Church

FREE FOODFREE GAMESFREE MUSICAL ENTERTAINMENT DELICIOUS BAKED GOODSPUMPKINSAND YARD SALE This is your personal invitation to be a part of this fall outreach ministry for Denbigh Presbyterian Church and to help spread Gods Word into our community. Especially exciting this year is that the Fall Festival is in concurrence with the 50th Anniversary Weekend Celebration of our church. As such, many past parishioners are expected to be in attendance. Please join us in extending the hand of fellowship and friendship to all. The food, games, and entertainment are free of charge. This year, donations from the Bake Sale will be used for the bag lunch program during PORT, our upcoming homeless shelter. Proceeds from the pumpkin patch and yard sale will go into the Haiti mission fund. So, start pricing and packing up all those unwanted treasures for the yard sale, dust off the cookbooks for the bake sale, and get the word out to your family and friends. October is just around the corner!

The pumpkins are growing on the Peninsula and will soon be headed our way. Please spread the word that THE PUMPKIN PATCH at Denbigh Presbyterian Church will be open beginning October 12. Sandi Murawski is once again leading this fund-raising effort and will be contacting you shortly with volunteer opportunities. Proceeds are marked for the Haiti mission trip fund.

There will be a short training class after worship service on September 18 for anyone who plans to use the new kitchen range or convection oven. Training is required before using this equipment. No pre-registration is needed. Kitchen Update As of this writing, our kitchen renovation is nearly complete. We are grateful to David Canaday for constructing an extra closet in the kitchen and donating the beautiful tile floor. The kitchen has been painted, and the plumbing work is underway. We are very hopeful that our kitchen renovation project will be complete within the next two weeks. Thank you for your generosity and for your patience.

Church Treasurer Retires and New Treasurer Begins We are very grateful to Gail McLeod for her 11 years of service as our church treasurer. Gail has given numerous hours of time and much energy to the ministry of keeping our church financial records in order, paying bills, reporting to the Session and assisting church leaders with all budgetary matters. She has also been instrumental in our investment planning and management. Gail has done an excellent job and has gone above and beyond the call of duty throughout her tenure as treasurer. Thank you, Gail! As of September 1, Heather Schwarting became our new church treasurer. We are pleased that Heather has accepted this role and will be serving in this capacity. Welcome aboard, Heather!

Esta Jarrett Ordained Esta Jarrett, a daughter of DPC, was ordained as Minister of Word and Sacrament in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) on Sunday, August 14, 2011 at Ginter Park Presbyterian Church in Richmond. DPC members John and Gail McLeod, Dee and Bill Jones, Jackie LedBetter and Bill and Pam McCullough attended the service. Esta has been called to a church in Canton, North Carolina. Esta is the daughter of Gus and Evelyn Jarrett.

Session News July and August 2011

Elected Heather Schwarting as treasurer of Denbigh Presbyterian Church effective September 1, 2011. Discussed ordination standards in light of Amendment 10-A to the PCUSA constitution. Called a Congregational Meeting for Sunday, July 31 to establish a quorum for congregational meetings, establish notice time for congregational meetings and establish make-up of the nominating committee. (All these items have to be voted upon in keeping with The New Form of Government.) Established quorum for session meetings at one-third of session membership, except when the session meeting is exclusively for the reception of new members who are already baptized, when the quorum shall be three session members. Approved Menchville House flea market/yard sale on DPC church grounds on July 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Approved wedding of non-members Geeta Ramnarine and Gabriel Watts at DPC on November 5, 2011 with Rev. Deborah Dail officiating. Approved the baptism of Haydn Sun Pham on July 3, 2011. Approved further exploration of hiring Rusty Norton as a ministerial intern at DPC. Approved report of Elder Commissioner Rusty Norton from July PEVA meeting. Approved a 10-week womens AA groups use of DPC facility on Saturdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. in Room 9 or the Library beginning September 10, 2011.


PreDenbigh Presbyterian Pre-Kindergarten

Its back to school time! The teachers at DPPK return to work on August 29, and we are all eager to meet our new students when they come for their Open House on September 8 or 9. The first day of school is September 12, and I just know it is going to be a fantastic school year. Please join me in welcoming a new teacher to our staff. Mrs. Lesley Spitzer will be teaching 3 year olds on T/Th and 4 year olds on M/W/F. Mrs. Spitzers background is in music education, and we are very excited to have her join us. We still have openings in our 2 day three year old classes and in our 3 day and 4 day four year old classes. Please share this information with your family and friends. HELP! Calling all adults interested in helping our youth grow in their Christian faith. Faith Weaver Friends will kick-off Wednesday, September 21 from 5:45-8:00 and we are in desperate need of table parents; Bible study leaders for High School, Middle School and Elementary classes; helpers to set up tables, set tables (plates, etc.), clean up after dinner and assist with checking in and checking out children. At Faith Weaver Friends, each child experiences an incredible, personal friendship with Jesus through opening celebrations, family-style dinner, Discovery Centers, Bible Study, recreation and journaling. The fall session of Faith Weaver Friends starts September 21 and runs to November 30. Faith Weaver Friends is for children/youth entering Kindergarten to High school. We are also offering a Bible Study Class for adults while the kids are enjoying their activities. Wednesday evenings are for the whole family! Faith Weaver Friends begins with a Parents Meeting on September 14 in the church Fellowship Room at 7:00 p.m. You will learn more about Faith Weaver Friends at the meeting and discover ways you can be involved in the ministry as you feel called. Fees will be collected at that time, as well. The cost for the fall term is $20 per child or adult (this covers dinner). If you have more than one child involved, the cost for additional children is $15 per child, not to exceed $50.00 per family. Registration forms will be available on the youth board located in the education wing outside the office of the Director of Childrens/Youth Ministries. Thank you all so much for your kind expressions of sympathy on the passing of my father. Your love and support, not only at this time, but throughout Dads long period of illness and incapacitation, have meant more to me than words can ever express. Administrative Assistant back from Leave of Absence

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity you gave me for travel this summer. Ken and I had a fantastic time, we visited so many wonderful places during the 6 weeks of travel plus had the great pleasure of spending time with my parents on the southern coast of Oregon.
