every day, around the world, innovative designs are being created using SolidWorks software. as design processes become more familiar, tasks become repetitive. for the more complex tasks, SolidWorks has a very powerful macro recording facility and extensive aPI (application Programming Interface) to enable companies to streamline their design processes. for the simpler tasks, simply removing one or two steps in the process or streamlining the way things are done can have a profound impact on usability and end user productivity. Since SolidWorks was first introduced this has been a defining characteristic. SolidWorks 2012 automates the design functions you use most often, making design more fun and less work: > equation input and equation editor - new interface and quicker access for adding and understanding equations. > Unit switching - quickly check and change units without using the options dialog. > Magnetic line and sequential balloon ordering - precisely arrange and reorder balloons on a drawing. > Integrated search for SolidWorks enterprise PDM - reduces the amount of screen clutter and minimizes effort by integrating the search dialog within Windows explorer and Windows file Dialogs. > Improved Where Used for SolidWorks enterprise PDM - versions and configurations more accessible. > Complete uninstall - ensures all SolidWorks program data is easily removed to help manage installations. > bookmarked and recent documents - fastest way to access commonly used documents. > function/command search - easily find obscure commands and place them on your toolbar. > Smart mates - easier and more intuitive to use. > exploded views for multi-body parts - to document designs such as weldments more accurately. > Import flow simulation results for shells - takes advantage of shell element efficiencies.

each release of SolidWorks focuses on two very important, but often overlooked areas. Performance relates to the speed of operation or the time a user has to wait for a task to be completed. Quality can refer to stability, predictability, or accuracy. both of these properties are extremely important in an engineering environment to ensure that design and manufacturing projects get completed on time and meet stringent quality standards. SolidWorks 2012 makes the design experience flow more naturally as tasks are completed faster and with fewer problems: > Graphical display improvements - smoother sketch graphics, always on ambient occlusion. > Large Design Review - fastest way to open, interrogate and navigate a large assembly. > Import / export translator improvements - files are no longer saved to disk during import, reducing time. > feature freeze - prevents unwanted feature rebuilds by locking all features above the freeze bar. > 64-bit Toolbox improvements - redesigned architecture to make Toolbox interaction faster.

Costing tool overview
the costing tool helps designers and manufacturers calculate the cost to manufacture sheet metal and machined parts by automating the cost estimation and quotation process. the costing tool is driven by manufacturing and material information in templates that determine the manufacturing cost. Whenever you change a design, you can immediately see the new, updated cost, along with a detailed cost breakdown based on manufacturing operations. Costing reports can also be automatically generated. Customer Benefits: Designers can get manufacturing estimates instantly, in order to make faster design decisions when manufacturing cost is a key factor. Manufacturers can automate their quoting process by customizing the costing templates to accurately reflect the costs of their own manufacturing processes.
Costing allows sheet metal and machined component costs to be instantly calculated inside SolidWorks Professional.

Costing template editor

the template editor is an easy to use interface that allows users to modify templates to match internal manufacturing or vendors processes. in the templates you can specify the material used to create the part, the manufacturing processes (such as laser cutting, bending, or milling), and the associated costs of these materials and manufacturing operations. the templates also let you create custom operations such as packaging, ERP entry, painting, or cleaning. Customer Benefits: Costing templates speed up the quote process, eliminate errors and provide an accurate, repeatable quoting system that you can update whenever new material or labor costs need revision.
the built in templates are easily customized to suit internal or vendor manufacturing.

Costing report
An important part of any design change is justification. With the costing report, you can clearly highlight the impact of specific design features or changes on product cost. the costing report is completely automatic saving time and contains cost information down to the individual operations.

Customer Benefits: Designers can document the effect of changes without any effort. Be ready to present design budgets at moments notice. Share detailed costing analysis data with anyone.

Sheet Metal Costing handles parts that are manufactured from sheet metal. To use this tool, the part must contain sheet metal features such as flanges, bends, and forming tools. Features such as holes and cuts are recognized as manufacturing cut paths for operations such as laser, water jet, and plasma cutting. Features such as bends, hems, form features and library features can also be evaluated for cost automatically. Custom operations are also supported. Customer Benefits: Detailed cost breakdown of sheet metal operations allow users to evaluate different manufacturing methods and weigh the benefit of design features.

MaChined CoSting
Machining Costing handles parts that are made from plate and block stock using 2 -axis machining operations. Material removal for parts that start as a block is accomplished by milling and drilling, while parts that start as plate use milling and drilling as well as operations such as laser, water jet and plasma cutting. Custom operations are also supported.

Customer Benefits: Detailed cost breakdown for machined parts allow users to evaluate different designs, materials, or develop detailed, accurate and repeatable customer quotes.

CoSt Roll Up
To aid in rolling up assembly costs in a BOM, and graphically visualizing differences in part costs in Assembly Visualization, a new property called Calculated Cost has been added to SolidWorks parts. The value of this property is automatically set to the current cost of the part as calculated by the SolidWorks Costing tool. Set Value/Text Expression while defining a custom property to Calculated Cost to read the calculated cost automatically. Customer Benefits: Use in a BOM as a way to total assembly costs and use in Assembly Visualization to show which parts cost more or less. Both Calculated Cost and manually input costs can be shown simultaneously for different parts. Once the actual cost of a part is known, the Calculated Cost property can be manually overridden to reflect this.
