Agencies | August 19: New Delhi:Terming people to people contacts between India and Pakistan as the single-most important confidence building measure(CBM), Parliamentarians from the two countries Friday favoured opening of new transit routes across the Line of Control (LoC) and additional flights. A joint statement issued at the end of the second round of India-Pakistan Parliamentarians Dialogue here, listed issues which can be solved at the level of Parliaments of both the nations. "People to people contacts were recognized as the single most important CBM. Recommendations were made to implement the agreement for opening new transit routes across LoC in Kashmir and Khokhrapar-Munabao, along with commencing additional flights,"
the statement said. The two-day long conference which began on Thursday, was jointly chaired by Member of Parliament Yashwant Sinha and Pakistani Senator Jan Muhammad Khan Jamali. The first round of the discussions were held in January this year in Islamabad. "This was informal getting together of the MPs. On both sides, Parliaments have now decided to have MPs constitute a friendship group. In future I am hoping that group in both the Parliaments will be able to carry forward the work that we have done," Yashwant Sinha said. On whether issues like terrorism and Kashmir were discussed, Sinha said, "They were raised, but the most important thing that everyone felt was the need to try and garner those things which are achievable and doable."

terming this as a "smear campaign".However, no one spoke about the differences and said the idea of the meeting was to focus on finalising the report. There is cosmetic peace in the region held through stick and gun as Jammu and Kashmir has been virtually turned into police state, he said. There is no space for political activities and opposition is kept behinds bars, under house arrest, he said, adding, They see normalcy today probably no Kashmiri is wielding gun or carrying stone in his hand. Do they want Kashmiri to carry gun and stone all the time and only then they say Kashmir needs to be resolved. When we resort to agitation, they call us to fight peacefully. WASHINGTON : The United States has said that the Lashkar-e-Taiba, responsible for the Mumbai attacks, is continuing to plot attacks in the region from within Pakistan. Expressing concern over continued presence of terrorist safe havens inside Pakistan, the US State Department in its annual report on terrorism asked Pakistan to take action against the group and its other frontal organisation. Despite international condemnation for its November 2008 attacks in Mumbai, Lashkar-e-Taiba (LT) continued to plan regional operations from within Pakistan. While the Government of Pakistan has banned LeT, the United States continued to urge further action against this group and its front organizations, the State Department said. The potential for WMD trafficking and
proliferation remained of concern in Pakistan due to the porous borders and the difficult security situation. Export Control and Related Border Security Assistance (EXBS) has enabled Pakistani officials to gain expertise in properly classifying items of proliferation concern and learn about export licensing best practices, it said. Despite efforts by Pakistani security forces, al-Qaeda operatives, Afghan militants, foreign insurgents, and Pakistani militants continued to find safe haven in portions of Pakistans Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), Khyber Paktunkhwa (KPK), and Baluchistan, the report said. AQ and other groups such as the Haqqani Network used Pakistani safe havens to launch attacks in Afghanistan, plan operations worldwide, train, recruit, and disseminate propaganda, ...See Attacks on pg 7
PdP condemns 'custodial killing' world peace not possible unless peoples Govts probe as eye-wash living conditions are improved: PM
KH News Network Srinagar Aug 19:Strongly condemning custodial killing of an undertrial, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) today said that killing innocent people has become a policy of the coalition regime. Party demanded a high level inquiry from an impartial agency to fix responsibility on those who were responsible for fake encounters and custodial killings in the state. We dont have any faith on the state government because all inquiries and probes ordered by the present dispensation headed by National Conference earlier in such gruesome killings have proved merely eye-wash, PDP leaders stated in a joint statement issued here today. No action has been taken so far in other inquiries ordered by the state government, they said and emphasized on engaging an impartial agency to conduct inquiries of such killings. They regretted that the Government has failed to safeguard life and dignity of the people of this State. They observed that the National Conference led coalition regime was looking helpless in protecting lives of people as killing of innocent citizens has been going unabated since formation of this regime in the State. Killing of one Sarfu Ram, a resident of Camp Khour, who had been arrested few days back, in Miran Sahib Police Station speaks about failure of the state government to protect lives of common citizens, they said and said that killing in an arrested person in the police station reflects prevailing lawlessness in the State.
