All 15 teache rs knew how to turn the NEO on. Of the 15 teachers, 20% were not familiar at all with the AlphaWord Plus program (a 1), 33% answered a 2 on the scale of familia rity, 27% were in the middle (a 3) and were a little familiar, 7% were familiar (a 4), and 13% were very familiar with it (a 5).
The trainees responded that 9 of them, or 60%, knew how to open a new file and 6 of them, or 40%, did not know how to open a new file and 50% could erase text f rom a file and the other 50% could not erase text from a file. Five of the train ees were not familiar with naming and saving a file on a NEO, 4 were familiar wi th the skill, and 6 were a little familiar. Naming and Saving a file on NEO One focus in the training is going to be opening a saved file because only 1 per son knew how to do that. The rest of the 14 trainees responded “I don’t know.” An ast ounding 100% did not know how to copy, paste, and cut text on a NEO using the ke y commands. Seventy-five percent of the trainees knew how to access the applicat ions on the NEO and only 25% did not know how to access them. When asked how con fident they were that they could open Accelerated Reader on a NEO, 27% answered a 1 on a scale of 1-5 (5 being very confident), 40% answered a 2 on the scale, 2 0% answered a 3, and 13% answered a 4. However, all 15 of them knew their user n ame and password to log onto Accelerated Reader. Luckily, all 15 also knew that the Receiver must be connected to the computer and turned on in order to take an
Accelerated Reader test. Eighty-seven percent replied that they knew the Accele rated Reader program very well and 13% replied they knew it well. No training on Accelerated Reader will need to be done. Description of the Learning Context Learning Context- The training for the elementary teachers will take place in th e school library. The library has plenty of tables for the teachers to sit at wi th their NEO’s. Because there are about six chairs per table, teachers can work in groups or partners to experiment with the NEO’s. There are also about fifteen com puters in the library that the Receivers can be hooked up to access the Accelera ted Reader program. All the computers already have the Renaissance and AlphaSmar t software downloaded on them and are compatible with the NEO’s. The computers als o are up to date with virus protection and have access to the internet if that i s needed. In the library, there is a projector, screen, and a document camera so that a NEO can be placed under the camera and be shown on the screen. This will allow the instructor to show the trainees where keys are and what the NEO scree n looks like. Transfer Context- After teachers are trained with the NEO’s, they will be using th em in their own classrooms. Their classrooms are equipped with a computer that h as the Renaissance and AlphaSmart software downloaded on it. This allows the NEO to access Accelerated Reader and save a file to that computer if necessary. The re are 24 NEO’s, so in most classes, every student will be able to use their own. If by chance, the NEO needs to be taken out of the classroom and taken home with the child, extra steps will need to be taken. If Accelerated Reader tests are g oing to be taken outside of the school building, the software would need to be d ownloaded onto the outside computer and a Receiver would need to be taken as wel l. Description of the Learners The learners participating in the training are thirteen elementary teachers as w ell as the elementary principal and the school librarian. The participants are f luent in English and range in age from 23 to 55. The breakdown in the group is 9 0% female and 10% male and the group is about half and half in terms of technolo gy knowledge and familiarity with it. However, all participants have basic keyb oarding skills.
