Course Objectives This (non-technical) course critically examines the common conceptions of what lies at the heart of the information and networked society, and their theoretical foundations. The role of information and media in the modern economy is examined, as well as the impact on individuals, organisations and society. The social context of information production, dissemination, and preservation are introduced, alongside the legal implications and ethical considerations of using information and new media. This is the core (compulsory) course of the new minor in information & new media. Learning Outcome At the end of this course students would (hopefully) have: Developed an understanding of the information and networked society Developed skills related to the evaluation of information and new media Developed a better appreciation of the social context and ethics of cyber culture

Course Interactions In order to encourage peer-learning, students will undertake group assignments. And to discourage free-riding, peer-evaluation will be practiced. As this is a participative course, students are expected to demonstrate maturity in reading the assigned materials and coming to class prepared and ready to interact. We shall use clickers extensively. Students are also to consult reputable online sources and industry journals and share their insights with the class during the discussions.
