HISTORY The inauguration of the Indian Open Golf tournament in 1964; set in motion what was to be one of the most esteemed and fiercely competed golf championships that the country would ever witness. From 1964 to 2009, the tournament has come a re ally long way in building a phenomenal golf franchise while at the same time ens uring a loyal fan following. The annals of Indian golf would surely reminisce the opening chapter when Peter Thomson of Australia teed off to eventually win the inaugural championship in 19 64. The setting was the Lodhi Course in the Delhi Golf Club (DGC). It would be a matter of keen interest for avid golfers to know that Peter won the championshi p for a record three times. Not only that, he was also commissioned to eventuall y redesign the course that gave him his first win on Indian soil. From the inaugural event in 64 until 99, the only other venue that hosted the tour nament (19 times) was the Royal Calcutta Golf Club, one of the oldest golf cours es outside of the British Isles. The first time that the tourney was hosted at t his hallowed venue in 1965, was also the first time when an Indian, P.G.Sethi, s et a precedent for further Indian wins. Hereafter the venue for the tournament a lternated between the DGC and the RCGC producing a plethora of well-deserved win s for professionals from around the globe. The season of 2000 followed by 2001 brought with it, a new host for the Indian O pen. This was the first time that the Indian Open moved out of its traditional v enue in the DGC to the Classic Golf Resort (CGR) in Gurgaon. Designed by the leg endary Jack Nicklaus, this ITC property brought a completely fresh perspective t o what Indian golf would look like. Jyoti Randhawa humbled this 300-acre expanse in 2000 and was followed by Thailand s Thongchai Jaidee, who triumphed in 2001. Thereafter, the Indian Open moved back to the charming locales of the DGC until 2008 when Liang Wen-Chong of China nailed a two-under-par 70 for a one-stroke tr iumph over Australian rookie Darren Beck and finished with a winning total of 16 -under-par 272. After a long journey of over 35 years, the 2009 Hero Honda Indian Open golf cham pionship saw its fourth venue in the DLF Golf & Country Club. With a 142-acre ex panse situated in the heart of DLF City in Gurgaon, the tournament was contested amongst the dramatic backdrop of the rugged Aravalli Range. 2009 saw a caddy-tu rned- pro from Bangalore, C Muniyappa, humble the DLF course with a winning scor e of 12 under. 2010 marks the return of the Indian Open to the Delhi Golf Club. Arjun Atwal, ri ding his form from his first victory on the USPGA Tour, will take-on the likes o f Jeev Milkha Singh and Shiv Kapur to contest the US$ 1.25 Million Hero Honda In dian Open 2010.
