West Vancouver Elementary Schools Basketball Jamboree 2007

Location: West Vancouver Secondary School Dates: girls, Thursday, December 6th boys, Friday, December 7th Times: Teams should arrive at WVSS at 12:30 (do not arrive earlier than 12:30). I would like to have a brief meeting with coaches on Court A at 12:45 just to touch base. The first game will start at 1:00. The last round robin game should end around 3:30. The championship game should finish up close to 4:00. Trophy presentation follows the championship game and all should wrap up somewhere close to 4:15. Rules/Referees/Scores: The regular season rules will be in effect. Games will consist of four shifts lasting 5 minutes each. Professional referees will ref the games. High school students will keep score. High school students will also record scores on large sheets of paper in the hallway between the courts. In the unlikely event that no high school student is available to record the score, the coach of the winning team is to record the final outcome of the game. Logistics: It would be appreciated if coaches could go over the following information with their players prior to the start of the tournament: • Students should not wander around in the school area. There is a large seating area that looks down upon the lower court. Limited seating may be available at the upper court. • As space is limited, it would be helpful if backpacks could be left at school or in cars. Any backpack brought to the tournament should be kept in the large seating area looking down on the lower court. • Washrooms are available near the gym facilities. Posted signs will indicate the way to those restrooms designated for our use. • Please park either on the street or in the student lot. Do not use a numbered teacher parking space. • There are water fountains near the gym. Bringing a water bottle is also a good idea. • Each team should bring a few basketballs to use during warm up intermissions. • Please check the schedule carefully to ensure your team is at the correct court at the correct time. This will help keep the tournament on schedule. Round Robin Games There are two pools, Pool 1 and Pool 2. I have tried my best to make them as evenly matched as possible. Each school will play the other teams within in their pool one time each. Championship Game After all round robin games have been completed, the two top teams from each pool will advance to the championship game. There is the possibility that teams will have identical records. In this event, the next step is to look at head to head match ups. If Team A and Team B finish with the same record, the winner of their game against one another will advance. If that still doesn’t decide a winner, greatest point differential over all four games will decide the team going to the final. Should there still be a tie, a coin toss or other mutually agreed upon method will decide which team is to advance to the finals.

Getting Ready: Please arrive at WVSS at 12:30 and be ready to start a game at 1:00. It is helpful to have the lines for each game written out in advance to facilitate shift changes and keep things on schedule. Move to the correct court right after your game (if you’re playing). Please do not crowd the sidelines while a game is in session. Game Schedule Round 1 2 3 4 5 Championship Trophy Presenation/ Final Words Start Time 1:00 1:30 2:00 2:30 3:00 3:30 4:00

Staying on Schedule Twenty minutes is allotted for playing the game. The extra 10 minutes is to allow shift changes (after every 5 minutes), moving to the correct court, getting set up, talking to players, etc. In the event that a game start late, it may mean that the game end up being less than the full 20 minutes. Tournament Schedules and Pools Courts A and B are adjacent to one another and courts C and D are side by side. I have tried to minimize travel between the upper court and the lower courts. Also, whenever possible, I tried to give teams a chance to play a school outside their regular season grouping. The two pools are as closely matched as I could make them. Girls Pool 1: PJ, RI, WB, CH, GLE Girls Pool 2: IP, CA, BICS, HO, WCT

Thanks to all coaches who took time out of their busy schedules to coach this season. It sounds like everyone enjoyed seeing the players’ skill level improve over the weeks. I would like to ask for one last favor. In the past, after the last game, I have spent 40-50 minutes cleaning up garbage and stacking chairs so the custodians aren’t stuck with our mess. If your team is not going to the championship game, could you please ask your players to pick up some garbage or stack a few chairs. The entire bottom area is not used for the championship, so all chairs should be stacked onto rollers. If we all pitch in, this can be accomplished within ten minutes or so. Your kind efforts are much appreciated. If you have any questions, you can leave me a message at voice mailbox # 3494 or send me an email at jcummings@sd45.bc.ca. I’ll get back to you as fast as I can. Good luck, Jim Cummings
