The first publication of MUSIC is a journal accompanied by a CD ROM exclusively on Bangla Kirtan – Bengal’s
only original classical form of music. This is a unique attempt and will hopefully succeed in explaining the
objectives of MUSIC to the readers.

The Many Faces of Bangla Kirtan

The sophisticated touch of Bengali thought which characterizes kirtan
is unmatched by all other forms of devotional music across India.
The true significance of kirtan lies essentially in music, over and
above its historical, social and religious implications. And that is a
real reward.

Kirtana: Speaking in Musicking

It is matter of regret, that this type of high quality song is now
endangered. I think it is very difficult to preserve all the subtleties of
high quality musicking in these days of speed capitalism.

Revisiting Time: A Partial Reading
of Vaishnav Padabali

In the late century Vaishnavgeeti was on the one hand popular but on
the other measured by utilitarian time was also condemned. However
it appears that dimension of time represented in Vaishnav literature,
was being neglected by progressive concept of time.

Srimati Sukla Hazra in interview
with MUSIC

“… one can hardly say that Kirtana is a folk tradition. Of course
Kirtana is influenced by many folk and regional traditions. But it has
every feature of a classical musical system.”
INTERVIEW BY TANIKA BHATTACHARYA
TRANSLATION AND TRANSCRIPTION BY NILANJAN DAS
For the live audio recording of the interview, refer to track 3 of the CD

Styles and Gharanas in Kirtan

The Rarh region in Bengal is a seat of music. The Vaishnavas, after
the advent of Sri Mahaprabhu, established various new centers of
intellectual pursuitsand music at such places. Among them Srikhanda
and Kandara the relatively old centresand Moynadal, a new one, were
all situated in Birbhum.
BY KAUSHIK CHOUDHURY
TRANSLATION BY TANIKA BHATTACHARYA
For demonstrations of various gharanas of Kirtan refer to track 4 of
the CD

The Talas of Sri Khol

The tala system of Sri Khol has its parallel in the tala system of Tabla
the main accompanying percussion instrument of the Hindustani
Classical Music. The reason behind this similarity is obviously
structural.
BY KAUSHIK CHOUDHURY
TRANSLATION BY TANIKA BHATTACHARYA
For demonstrations of the talas refer to track 2 of the CD
