CRITICAL CONvERSATIONS ABOUT MEDICATION, MENTAL HEALTH AND RECOvERy OCTOBER 12 2011

More than Medication:

Recovery research and knowledge from lived experience shows us that far more than medication, and perhaps no medication at all, is required for mental well being. However, medication takes centre stage in public discourse about mental health treatment. Far from being the universal panacea for mental health problems, psychiatric medication brings its own risks and difficulties. The assumptions about its central role in treatment services and in recovery can obscure knowledge of alternative and additional approaches to living with and managing distress. By having an open dialogue about the use of medication in mental health treatment, its efficacy and hazards, we hope to encourage conversations about what else people have found works for them and what else services, family and the community can offer to support this. Critical perspectives from the lived experience of service users and their loved ones, from research, and from service providers, will be explored within these conversations.
