WELCOME
A very personal and heart-felt WELCOME to our second annual Midwest Versatility Horse Sale. I am honored to speak for the fine set of consignors and the horses they have brought here to our great Black Hills location for your inspection and purchase. If you have come here knowing exactly what you are looking for, I'm going to bet that you find it. If you don't know exactly what you are looking for, I know you are going to find plenty to like, and want to take home with you. We have worked hard since our first sale one year ago to find and bring to you a great set of horses. We have tried to set some strong criteria for what we think best fills our commitment to the type of horses which we think are best suited for working and versatility, ranch, arena, trail and hauling down the road horses. We think you will find ample qualities to appreciate about this set of horses. We've got horses representing some of the very best that the American Quarter Horse has to offer. Just look at these pedigrees and bloodlines; there is some awesome foundation heritage that we are offering to you. We believe that the Midwest is still the very heart and soul of the last of the big foundation ranches as well, holding firmly to the Cowboy set of ethics that this country was built on, and by which standards we still embrace. The honesty and dedication that has gone into the development of these horses is a time honored tradition of the well-respected Cowboy Way. Our philosophy in the prairie foothills to these great and historic Black Hills is that we raise'm, train'm, compete on 'em and we earn a livin' on 'em--full circle, from conception to performance, with you as the benefactor of this well planned program.

We believe that we know each and every individual, we know what all of their ancestors and siblings are, and what they are capable of. We develop each and every one of these horses and get them on the track to their truest potential, with you, the end user in mind. We want to let you know that we aren't going to leave you at the barn door when you head home with your new horse. If you've got questions down the road about your purchase, please feel free to contact us through our electronic media, or pick up the phone. We are available to you, long after the sale. So contact us with your questions and concerns as you meld with your new horse, and we'll work with you to ensure it is a good fit, one you'll be proud to throw a leg over. We look forward to seeing you on down the trail with your new purchase, and enjoy along with you the rewards ahead of you. If you are ever in our neck of the Hills, come, stay, and ride with us a while.

Recognition by AQHA

Paul Tierney is proud to announce that his family's ranch, near Oral, SD, has just (September 7, 2011) been accepted as one of the first few ranches in the world to be inducted in to the new AQHA Ranching Heritage Breeders program. The American Quarter Horse Association just recently announced this new program to their members in August. When the AQHA was formed, just short of the mid twentieth century, it was conceived and populated by the " … dusty and muscled cow horses, herding cattle on the ranches of the American West, working without fanfare and giving an honest day's labor for a measure of hay or oats … " according to an AQHA announcement. The new program is an effort of the AQHA to acknowledge its foundation roots and the ever increasing impact that these ranch raised horses still lend to the popularity of the largest breed in the world. AQHA members around the world are recognizing the value of the sensible minds and skill sets that these ranch raised horses offer to all disciplines of Quarter Horse riders. "This miraculous breed of versatile horses is now being stepped back in time to recognize how it got to be the popular breed that it has become," according to legendary roper and Quarter Horse breeder, Paul Tierney. The new AQHA program is designed to put a spotlight on ranch raised horses, and help those ranch horse breeders to add value to the market place they attract. Horse owners all over the world have become keen in recognizing how bomb-proof and honest a ranch raised horse is; and that translates into value in the marketplace. "It is an honor to be part of this important new initiative of the AQHA," Tierney claims. "This program is so closely allied with our ranch horse breeding program, that we feel privileged to be able to be part of it, at the ground level, so we can work to help it grow, and obtain the prominence it so deserves, and has been waiting for." Tierney concludes.

2001 Sorrel/Roan Gelding - Grade

"JP" is an absolute gentleman: he handles exceptionally nice, has very polite manners, and his bald face is only part of what will catch your eye. He was out of a Paint mare, by No Brakes, by The Signature, and a grandmother on the maternal side was Triple AAA; so Speed is very accessible from this gelding, who has a huge future. This is a Head horse, you should consider in your program! Watch for this gelding in the preview: he has more than enough Run! Thus makes him a candidate for any rider. Already been “around the world” seen everything and is ready to go to work for anyone. Consider this well-seasoned athlete. This horse is a full brother to a gelding the Tierney's hauled in PRCA rodeos and many other venues. He has been Headed on and would make an excellent Steer Roping prospect. "Nibbels" has earned many buckles/awards and NBHA state championships, every season for the last 7 years. There are no arena issues, in or out. He's 100% sound, hauls, never needed injections, never took a lame step, and never bucked. He has no bad habits, and Trail rides too. He would make a super horse for a young or any experienced barrel racer. Nibbel's pedigree and confirmation speaks for itself. I raced his Dam successfully into her early twenties. This gelding is a pleasure to be around and I will really miss him, but I have several of his siblings coming along that I need to ride. Peponita and Doc's Jack Frost both showing on the bottom side. "Critter" is a very solid and dependable Head horse. Our whole family heads off of this horse. He fits a high number header, & comes right back & supports & builds the confidence of a youth header in the very next event. Take a look at the make-up and profile on this horse: he's got the build & the equipment & he knows how to use it. Critter runs to cattle hard, & this guy really uses that powerful hindquarters of his to move cattle, work off of, and get your task accomplished, quickly and efficiently. Both our girls, as well as both boys, have used "Critter" at every level of team roping. Critter has seen a lot of arenas around this great country. I shared this special horse with an 8th grader in 2011, who hauled him to Little Britches Rodeos. This horse would make an excellent Single Steer Roping horse. He is a nine year old gelding straight off the Weller Ranch, Kadoka, SD; born and raised there until six. Shad spent his days there as a Ranch horse, part of the remuda. I haven't had the time in these three years I've owned him to make him in to a head horse, as I'd planned. Have suspected that with his soft mouth, athletic ability, and willingness to do and go anywhere you point him, that he might make a good barrel horse; but I rope, I don't do cans. I have Trail ridden Shad in some tough areas, and he goes anywhere and crosses water under all conditions, and can cover a lot of ground at a walk. "Sonny" is a super nice gelding with all the potential in the world. He is truly the whole package. He is gentle and easy going, yet not at all lazy. He has been used in the sale barn and on the Ranch. I have used him to calve on all spring. He has been Roped on, & doctored calves in the pasture, Sorted, Paired Out on, Drug lots of calves. He has had rattle paddles used on & around him. I've leaned over to the ground & drug both live & dead calves on board with me. Gentle, gentle… and easy to get along with. Sonny has the potential to make a great kids horse & is a great using horse as well. Sonny has the color, conformation, lots of eye appeal, & the disposition & athletic ability to complete the package. And if you hadn't noticed, Sonny Dee Bar is his Grand-Daddy and Great-Great Grand-Daddy on the top side. And from the bottom side you can see the great Poco Pine right on his papers, so you know that Poco Bueno is only one off the papers. He also brings in some of that foundation Leo and McCue breeding in from further back on each side. Jody is a great handling horse, and very kind and gentle. Her mother, Driftwood San, was the very best heeling horse that Paul ever competed on. Take a look at the pedigree on this sweet mare; she is packing AQHA bloodlines from some of the very best. She's got Peppy San right there on the papers as her maternal great grandfather. She's also showing Leo and Driftwood genes as part of her amazing make up.
