NAC Chair updates – Jodene Green Republic still planning to develop at San Carlos and Sunol. At least two years out from groundbreaking. They will continue to setup town hall meetings to establish communication with the surrounding communities and get further feedback on their proposal. Park space and traffic is still a main issue. Upcoming CLI (Community Leadership Institute) meetings (nationwide group of neighborhood meetings) for San Jose between Oct 23th – 26th. City leaders get together to help raise community and civic leadership. Looking for volunteers to show the folks around Delmas Park and outline the accomplishments of neighborhood involvement and improvements. http://www.nw.org/network/documents/CLISanJose2k8final.pdf The letter writing movement regarding the eyesore of the PAL building on Park Ave is making its rounds within city hall, need to continue to apply pressure for city action. Shayna Hirshfield, Environmental Services Dept Office of Sustainability Shayna’s office is implementing a grant for outreach and education classes throughout the county. Right now they are giving away a CFL bulb in exchange for a pledge to change from incandescent light. The office is also distributing information around energy savings rebate incentives. Note that CFLs contain mercury and need to be taken to identified places such as Orchard Supply or Home Depot for proper disposal. Juan Borelli, Planning Dept Sr. Planner Online permit database has been down for a couple days, and couldn’t provide an updated list for the meeting. The Abyssinia Market on 394 Bird has requested to be on the Sept Delmas Park agenda to provide a presentation for Conditional Use Permit" (Reference File Number CP08-007) to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages (beer and wine). Regarding the Green Valley Republic proposal on Sunol/San Carlos, nothing has yet been submitted to the planning dept. Regarding Delmas Towers, Kathy Sutherland met with the development group and talked about downsizing the property (middle of the block only) and discussed a sloped design of 3 – 7 story buildings. Eventually another formal meeting will occur to get community approval. Art Nino - Update to the Housing improvement Grant Program A total of 5 applications have been submitted (5x$25K=$125K) from the $200K budget. There is still an opportunity to knock on more doors in the neighborhood. Michele Beasley, Field Rep for Greenbelt Alliance For 50 years, Greenbelt Alliance has worked with local communities and partner groups to help secure long-term protection for more than 1.1 million acres of open space, establish urban growth boundaries around 26 cities and five counties, and endorse the creation of 60,000 homes within existing urban areas. The main reason to come to the Delmas NAC meeting was to find out more on the SNIs, and how her organization can collaborate with the local NACs to “protect local spaces and create vibrant places.” Wrap up comments Still looking for a space for the community garage sale. The Best Electric owner never responded from an inquiry by Jodene. Kathy Sutherland will call Vic (the owner of Best
Electric), to see if the Delmas NAC can hold a garage sale on their property (near corner of Delmas/Park). There was discussion regarding the format of our monthly meetings, and what can be done differently regarding the format to bring more folks to the monthly meetings. One idea was to be more issue driven by focusing on a single issue/desired accomplishment. Still TBD. Art Nino mentioned one of the local dumpster days is scheduled for October 2008, and the Delmas NAC still has an approved second dumpster day to schedule and organize. Need to finalize on a future date. Cathy Lavin mentioned that the San Jose neighborhood group meetings are being held at city hall on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Volunteers are welcome.
