E5164 : COMPUTER SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS Lab No: 5 TITLE : POWER SUPPLY AND CABLE CONNECTION

OBJECTIVE: From the practical, students would be able to;

1. Identify the voltage on each colour-coded wire.
MATERIAL REQUIRED: 1. A computer set. 2. Multimeter 3. Computer tool-kit. 4. Screwdriver. INTRODUCTION A computer power supply unit (Computer PSU) is the component that supplies power to a computer. More specifically, a power supply is typically designed to convert 100-120 V (North America and Japan) or 220-240 V (Europe, Asia and Australia) AC power from the mains to usable low-voltage DC power for the internal components of the computer. Some power supplies have a switch to change between 230 V and 115 V. Other models have automatic sensors that switch input voltage automatically, or are able to accept any voltage between those limits. WORK STEP:

1. Turn the computer OFF. 2. Disconnect the power cord cable before open the computer casing. 3. Open power supply case and identify internal parts as transformer, rectifier, filter and
regulator. 4. Draw power supply block diagram.

Check COM1 and COM2 port and determine the total number of COM port pin. Touch your multimeter black probe to black wire and red probe on each colour-coded wire as below. Number of wire is ____________. Check Floppy disk drive connector and determine which one is pin no 1. Observe carefully and write down what will happen? ___________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________ 12.5. 10. Check LPT1 wire. Why there are twists part on FDD wire? 8. Observe carefully and write down what will happen?__________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ 13. Then touch both jumpers to each other. Fill up your answer on table given. By using two jumpers (touch one jumper to black wire and another one to green wire on power connection to motherboard). By using multimeter test voltage on each colour coded wire. It's normally labeled "PW SW" or "Power SW" and the motherboard will be labeled with 2 . Check hard disk drive connector and determine which one is pin no 1. Number of wire is ____________. Pin 1 2 3 COLOUR Voltage Value DESCRIPTION 7. By using two jumpers (touch both jumpers to motherboard power switch). ________ 9. Fill up your answer on table given below. Check disk drive supply by using multimeter and test voltage to on each color-coded wires. Touch your multimeter black probe to black wire and red probe to green wire on power connection to motherboard.

"P-ON" "PW" or something similarly cryptic. Determine the function of COM1 and gives two equipment used COM port as a connection to one computer. Why we should turn off the computer and unplug the power cord before open the computer? 3 . 2. Observe carefully and write down what will happen? ________________ ___________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________ QUESTION: 1."PW SW". Then touch both jumpers to each other.
