Allah(swt)narratestousintheQuranthestoryofSulaimanandanant.Wemustfirstunderstandthat Sulaiman(as)wasaProphetwhohadbeengivendominionthatsurpassedallotherhumanbeingspast andpresent.'Abdullahbin'Amrbinal'Aas(ra)reportsthatRasoolulAllah(saw)said,'WhenSulaiman (Solomon)sonofDawoud(David)(re)builtBaitulMaqdisherequestedfromAllahthreethingsin intervals: HeaskedAllahgovernorshipwithJusticethatisinaccordancewiththeLawsofAllah Heaskedtopossessdominionthatcannotbeattained/possessedbyanyoneafterhim Heasked,afterhavingcompletedthe(re)buildingoftheMasjid,thatanyonewhocomestoit,seeking onlytoprayinit,thathedepartsfromit(exitshim)sinlessasthedayhewasgivenbirthtobyhis mother(Inanothernarrationhesaid,'Asforthe(first)tworequests,thenhereceivedthem.Iamhopeful thathewasgrantedthethirdaswell.') [ReportedbyanNasaa'i,Ahmed,IbnMajah,IbnHibban,AlHaakiminalMustadrak,AlBayhaqiinash Shu'abandothers.] OneoftheblessingsextendedtoSulaimanwashisabilitytoconversewiththenaturalliving environment.

Allah(swt)saysinSuratalNaml: "AndthereweregatheredbeforeSulaiman(Solomon)hishostsofjinnsandmen,andbirds,and theyallweresetinbattleorder(marchingforwards).Till,whentheycametothevalleyofthe ants,oneoftheantssaid:"Oants!Enteryourdwellings,lestSulaimn(Solomon)andhishosts crushyou,whiletheyperceivenot." Sohe[Sulaiman(Solomon)]smiled,amusedatherspeechandsaid:"MyLord!Inspireand bestowuponmethepowerandabilitythatImaybegratefulforYourFavourswhichYouhave bestowedonmeandonmyparents,andthatImaydorighteousgooddeedsthatwillplease You,andadmitmebyYourMercyamongYourrighteousslaves."SuratanNaml(27:1719) ShaykhulIslamIbnalQayyimdiscussesinMiftaahDarasSa'aadah(Vol.1,Pg.243)thelinguistic poweroftheant'sspeech. TheParableofSpousesandGarments
Bismillah Allah()usesamazingparablesintheQur'anthatstrikefear,aweandamazementinthe heartsofthebelievers.ThroughouttheQur'an,Allah()drawsparablesforustoconveythe importanceofcertaintopics,toextractlessonsfromthemandsothatwemayponderandreflectover them.Wehearmanytimesoftheexamplesofthehypocrites,themushrikeen(pagans)andthe believers.ButthereisoneparablethatAllah()putsforththatincreasestheloveandmercy betweenahusbandandwife,andthisparableisoneofthemosteloquentandstrikingintheQur'an. Allah()describesthespousalrelationshipinSurahAlBaqarah,whenHesays:

Translation:Theyareyourgarmentsandyouaretheirgarments.[SurahBaqarah,verse187] SubhanAllah,Allah()comparestherelationshipbetweenahusbandandwifeasclothing. Allah()saysthatboththehusbandandwifeare"libaas",garments,foreachother.This showstheequalitythatAllahplacesbetweenspousesandhoweachpartnerhasaroleinthe relationship. RememberagainthatAllah()putsparablesintheQur'ansothatwemayponder,solet's ponderonhowaspousecomparestoclothes: Clothesareclosetoyou,behindyourclothesisyourbareskin.Aspouseisclosetoyouinthat manner,emotionallyandphysically. Clothesprotectyourskinfromtheoutside.Ahusbandisthemaintainerofhiswifeandthewife protectsherhusband'shomeandproperty. Clothesbeautifyyou.Ahusbandandwifecomplimenteachother,inthislifeandthenext. Clothesarecomfortable.Whenoneisaroundtheirspouse,theyfeelateaseandtheirheartsareat rest.Onecanrelaxaroundtheirspouseandfindcomfortinthemandtheirwordswhentheyarein difficulty. Clotheshideandscreenyou.Ahusbandandwifeshouldnotdiscusseachother'sfaultstotheoutside orcomplaintoothersabouttheirspouse. SubhanAllah,indeedourLordisArRa'oof(theextremelyCompassionate)forplacingthistranquility betweenspouses.AsIbnKathirsaysinhistafseerofSurahRoom:IfAllahhadmadeallofAdam's

betweenspouses.AsIbnKathirsaysinhistafseerofSurahRoom:IfAllahhadmadeallofAdam's progenymale,andcreatedthefemalesfromanotherkind,suchasfromJinnoranimals,therewould neverhavebeenharmonybetweenthemandtheirspouses.Therewouldhavebeenrevulsionifthe spouseshadbeenfromadifferentkind.OutofAllah'sperfectmercyHemadetheirwivesfromtheir ownkind,andcreatedloveandkindnessbetweenthem.Foramanstayswithawomanbecausehe lovesher,orbecausehefeelscompassiontowardsheriftheyhaveachildtogether,orbecauseshe needshimtotakecareofher,andsoon. ManymayfeelembarrassedthatthisverseismentionedintheQur'an,butsubhanAllah,thisisjust anotherbeautifulexamplewhichshowsthatourdeenistrulycompleteandthatAllahhavegivenus guidancethroughHisBookforeveryaspectofourlives,andforthisweshouldbethankful alhamdulillah. ThisparablebetweenaspouseandagarmentisoneofthemanyparablesintheQur'anthatweshould ponderandreflectover,andthisisfromtheUltimateWisdomandMercyofAllah()thatHe explainsHisversesandsignstousinamannerthatismostfittingtoourintellect. AndIenduedyouwithlovefromMe,inorderthatyoumaybebroughtupunderMyEye, Thewordhubbistheoriginalverbalnounoftheverbhabba,whilethewordmahabbahiswhatis knownasthemasdarmeemi(verbalnounbeginingwithalettermeem)ofthesameverb.Asitisthe

knownasthemasdarmeemi(verbalnounbeginingwithalettermeem)ofthesameverb.Asitisthe originalverb,itistheorigin,theasl,andthusitappeared9times.Butmahabbahonlyappearedonce. Thus,whenthelovestemsfrommankind,thewordhubbwasused,butwhenitstemsfromAllaah,the wordmahabbahwasused. 2.ThelovethatwasbestoweduponMusafromAllaahsettledinthesoulofMusaandbeganto emanatefromhimjustaslightemanatesfromthesun,anditsbeautifulfragrancewouldattractthe peopletohimandmakethemlovehim.Thus,Aasiyah,thewifeofFirawn(amongmanyothers), immediatelyfellinlovewithhimandrequestedfromherhusbandthathenotkillthebabyMusa(seeal Qasas,verse9). Butwhenhumansshowlovetooneanother,itdoesnotpenetratethebelovedsuchthatothersthen begintolovethemalso.ThisonlyoccurswhenAllaahlovesHisservant.Thus,itwasonlyrighttouse differentwordstoexpressthesedifferenttypesoflove. 3.Thewordhubbismuchmorewidelyusedthanthewordmahabbah.Thus,themorecommonword wasusedwithasubjectthatisgreatinnumber(i.e.mankind),whiletherarewordwasusedwitha Subjectthatisnot(i.e.Allaah).

Amongstthemeaningsthataninterrogativecanacquireisnegation.Applyingthistotheayah,the interrogative,hal,wouldthenbenegatory.ThisinterpretationissupportedbyQatadahsexegesisof theayah,TherearentanysimilaritiestoAllahoranyequals.[1] However,anotherquestioncouldbepropounded,andthatis,whywasntaparticleofnegationsuchas laausedinsteadofaninterrogativeifanegationwasintended?Therichnessofmeaningand eloquenceisaugmentedbythecombineduseoftheinterrogativeandnegation,asopposedtothesole useofthenegation.ThiscombinedformatdeliverstotheArabicreaderanallusiontoachallengeif thereisanotheroneworthyofworshipandyouaretruthfultheninrealitydoyouknowofanysimilarity toHim?! Yet.intheayahthissequencewasnotused.Theprincipleisoperablehere:"Advancingatermwhose normistobeasuccessorprovidesthemeaningofexclusivity".AlHamd,orcompleteperfection,inthis worldisascribedtoAllahandtootherdeitiesaswell,albeitwrongfully.However,inthehereafternone shallbeascribedwithcompleteperfectionexceptAllah.AlHamdonthatdayisexclusivelyforHim.
