Stimulates alpha2adrenergic receptors in CNS to inhibit sympathetic vasomotor centers. It decreases systolic and diastolic BP and heart rate. Orthostatic effects tend to be mild and occur infrequently. Also inhibits renin release from kidneys

     

Do not discontinue prior to surgery; monitor BP carefully during surgery; have other BP-controlling drugs readily available. Store epidural injection at room temperature; discard any unused portions. Reevaluate therapy if clonidine tolerance occurs; giving concomitant diuretic increases the antihypertensive efficacy of clonidine. Monitor BP carefully when discontinuing clonidine; hypertension usually returns within 48 hr.

 

Clonidine may interact with other drugs used to lower blood pressure, sedating drugs (which are used for pain, sleep, and some other conditions), digoxin, and amitriptyline. Tell all prescribers you're taking this drug. Don’t take herbs, especially capsaicin, without consulting your prescriber. Avoid alcohol while taking this drug. Move slowly when sitting up or standing, to avoid dizziness or lightheadedness. Dangle your legs briefly before getting out of bed.
