September 22, 2011 © KPC Media Group Inc. • kpcnews.com Angola Fall Fest 3
Dear friends, residents and visitors:
The Fall Fest Committee and the
Angola Area Chamber of Commerce are
very excited about welcoming our visitors
and community to Fall Fest 2011. Fall Fest
is a family-oriented festival and has been a
great event for our community.
This is my third year to be involved as
chairman of Fall Fest and I’m excited
about all that it has to offer. The food
court is always a favorite, along with the
bands playing in the downtown and the
kids having a great time with the many
activities geared toward them. Last year
we had a great time at the Civil War Days
in the Commons Park. The Civil War
Encampment will also be great this year,
whether you are a participant or observer.
I’m excited about the new activities we
will have along, with bringing back some
of the favorites.
The Lift Off for Literacy will again take
place on the Public Square. There will be
Silly Safari Funologist Amazon John back
for a repeat performance.
The waiter and waitress competition
continues this year, which should be a lot
of fun.
We are having several great bands on
the main stage, such as George Damron,
Blue Skyway, Elements, Jim Dove, Sierra
Sham and Rhon Van Erman. The adult
beverage tent will have two great bands on
Friday and Saturday nights.
The A-Town Dance Company will also
be on hand to perform this year, too.
Because the city and our committee
want to ensure your safety we will have
crossing guards around the Public Square
for most of the weekend.
I hope you will take advantage of this
wonderful event in your downtown by
bringing your family and friends. Fall Fest
wouldn’t be the wonderful festival it is
without you, our community and all the
businesses that stepped up to be Fall Fest
sponsors.
See you this weekend!
Sincerely,
Todd Gorman, Fall Fest Chair,

Civil War Days visits Battle of Nashville
BY JENNI FER DECKER
jdecker@kpcnews.net
ANGOLA — This year marks the 150th anniversary of
the beginning of the Civil War.
As in past years, the fifth annual Angola Civil War
Days will once again take place during Fall Fest, Sept. 24-
25 at Commons Park.
Cara Macknick, Civil War Days secretary, said 300 re-
enactors from seven states and two countries will converge
on the park to bring history to life. This year, they will re-
enact the Battle of Nashville.
Civil War Days started on the lawn of the Kline
Museum eight years ago. Once the event grew too big, it
was moved to the courthouse lawn and finally to
Commons Park.
This year’s event will feature an appearance by New
York actor Patrick Falci, who will portray Gen. A.P. Hill
and narrate the Battle of Nashville.
“We also have the pre-1840 group, fur trader and
mountain men. The Civil War is the main feature,”
Macknick said. “This has everything to do with American
history.”
Macknick encouraged the public to check out the

plethora of activities the event offers and to
come early. Demonstrations will be given
at every campsite.
“Come at least two hours before the
battle begins to get a feel for what’s going
on,” she said. “We’re trying to get people to
come earlier. People invite questions and
most want you to come into their
campsites. Come early. There is much to
do.”
When the Auburn Community Band
plays at 1 p.m. Saturday, Macknick said it
will perform “The 1812 Overture” to live
cannon fire.
“On Saturday evening, 6:30-10 p.m. the
public can participate in a period town
dance with costumes optional. We will have
some Indianapolis fiddlers and a live band.
We will be dancing to period pieces,” she
said.
In addition, the 40/8 voiture train
“Blackjack” will run a free shuttle between
downtown Angola and the Civil War Days
event. Pick-up for Civil War Days will be
located off of Circle Hill Drive behind
Angola Ford Mercury. It will run from
noon to 5 p.m., but note the Civil War Days
event closes at 4 p.m. The shuttle is
sponsored by Enchanted Lakes Faire.
Macknick said American history eras
represented will include trappers and
traders, Civil War, World War II, Vietnam
War and the War on Terror. Tom Frederick
II will have some military equipment
available for children to try on.
“We have new things for kids: a new
children’s playground and hay maze. We
will have a photo board of President
Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln,”
Macknick said.
Cash donations for the event may be
given to the American Legion Post 31,
Angola, to help offset the cost.
The event and parking are free.
Civil War Days is sponsored by Angola

ANGOLA — If you want to get really
close to some amazing animals and perhaps
touch some of your favorites you need to
join the Silly Safari that will take place on
Sunday at 1 p.m. on the Piggy’s Main Stage
during Fall Fest.
Alligator Aaron, Amazon Jungle John
and Safari Steve are lively, interactive
characters so unique and refreshing you
will be amazed how they appeal to all ages.
A Silly Safari Show is a high-energy and
zany theatrical performance.
You’ll see animals and all the things they
do. Children and volunteers join Silly
Safaris on-stage in games, comedy and
various fun activities. Everybody is
entertained and engaged in the action.
Each animal, each game, every interac-
tion teaches something simple about nature,
conservation and the world around us.
You never know what to expect when
you go on safari. One thing’s certain: You’ll
be having so much fun you won’t notice
that you’re learning facts about animals.
Silly Safaris brings a variety of animals
— mammals, reptiles, birds, amphibians,
and, yes, bugs.
The approach is warm, inviting and
playful, which leads to effective and
rewarding entertainment.
The philosophy celebrates families and
learning, while the audience joins in the
fun. You might become a lizard, smell a
ferret, hypnotize an alligator or hug a
rabbit.
The socialized, well-trained animals
always offer their best, creating positive
human-animal experiences. Join Alligator
Aaron, Amazon Jungle John or Safari Steve
on a Silly Safari in downtown Angola.
A Silly Safari will entertain Fall Fest
visitors on Sunday at 1 p.m.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush
ordered U.S. troops to get ready for war and
braced Americans for a long, difficult assault
against terrorists to avenge the deadliest attack
on the nation. “Those who make war against the
United States have chosen their own destruc-

Bush said. “We’ll get them running and we’ll
bring them to justice.” But first the nation had to mourn its dead.
“This is indeed a sad occasion, one to be repeat-
ed thousands of times by our fellow citizens
across the country,” Supreme Court Justice
Clarence Thomas said at the memorial service for Barbara Olson, wife of U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson. She was among the 64 passengers and crew members on American Airlines Flight 77 that crashed into the Pentagon. Rescue workers s

Northern Indiana Lakes Country, home to the
state’s only refrigerated toboggan, offers year-round
recreational opportunities.
Discover hiking trails, two sandy beaches, a nature
center, and guided horseback trail rides at Pokagon
State Park.
Rent a pontoon or paddle boat to explore Lake James,
Indiana’s third largest natural lake.
Famous for its 1,700-foot dual-lane toboggan which
operates weekends the day after Thanksgiving
through the end of February, Pokagon is also home
to cross-country skiing.
Northeast Indiana’s only winery, a 400-acre buffalo
preserve and six challenging golf courses offer
unique experiences. Spend the morning shopping at
the outlet mall then finish the day shopping for
antiques and specialty items in quaint downtowns.
