Open Art Studio is Back!
Welcome back Alice Sims—to lead three new Open Art Studio classes this fall season. Beginning this month on October 10 (yes, the Community Center is open on Columbus Day), the first class will take place in the Art Studio. Expand your art skills or learn new techniques. Be creative in a relaxed atmosphere. Special Event - - Prince George’s County History Presentation
Courtney Hobson, the new Outreach and Tour Coordinator for the Darnall’s Chance House and Museum in Upper Marlboro, will be dressed in period costume, and will offer a 45 minute PowerPoint presentation on the colonial history of Prince George’s County. The program, entitled “Prince George’s County: An 18th Century Perspective” covers the founding of Maryland as a colony, the types of people who made up the colony, it’s economy, the founding of Prince George’s County, and some of the 18th Century architecture that still stands in the county. There will be ample time for questions and answers during the presentation. This history presentation precedes our trip to Darnall’s Chance House Museum in December 2011. Mary Beth Hatem, a Takoma Park resident with 20 plus years of experience teaching, coaching, and competing in tennis and table tennis, will offer a ―Table Tennis Basics‖ class for seniors this fall. Ms. Hatem is a former ranked table tennis player, and she has been training with U.S. Olympian Amy Feng, at Club Joola in Rockville, Maryland. 1. To begin the registration process, please call 301-891-7280 to include your name on a “pre-registration” list.
Note: This list will hold the participants place in line for 3 days to one week, depending on when the trip is scheduled in the month. Registration for the current month’s trip (s) will usually begin on the first business day of the month. To insure proper processing, it is best to speak directly with a Recreation Department staff person, and not leave a recorded message.

2. A Takoma Park Recreation Department registration form is required for each trip.
Note: This form must be received by the end of the pre-registration period, or the participant will be removed from the list, and the space will become available.

Note: We have a fair ―first come-first serve‖ system for all participants. Trips are popular and fill up fast, so register early. Shop till you drop! Per your requests, we will visit this fabulous outlet center in Leesburg, Virginia. You will find 110 outlet stores, so you can start your holiday shopping early. Bring spending money for shopping and to purchase lunch in the restaurants/food court in the outlet mall. Wear comfortable walking shoes. The outlet mall is wheelchair accessible. Trip # 2: The Brewmasters Castle, Dupont Circle, Washington, DC
Oktoberfest is being celebrated this month, and we will honor it in our own way with a tour of this fascinating historic site. The Brewmaster’s Castle, is the late-Victorian style home of German-American beer baron Christian Heurich, and is included on the National Register of Historic Places. Heurich was the city’s most successful brewer, and ran his brewery, on what is now the site of the Kennedy Center, until his death in 1945. Heurich’s home, built in 1892, features original hand-carved fireplace mantles, gilt furniture, bronze statuary, an onyx and marble staircase, decorative arts, musician’s balcony, oak-paneled dining room, bierstube, gardens, and much more. Bring spending money to purchase lunch at a local restaurant. The site is wheelchair accessible. Date: Friday, October 21, 2011 Time: 9:00 a.m.—3:00 p.m. Meet at the Takoma Park Community Center, 7500 Maple Avenue. Bus pick up at Franklin Apartments, Mapleview Apartments, and Victory Tower only.
