Optometrist Michelle McReynolds Opens West County Vision Center
After 10 years of practicing optometry, L. Michelle McReynolds, O.D., opened her own practice this year in Kirkwood. “I started West County Vision Center because I wanted to create a personalized experience for each patient, from the length of the exam, finding the right employees and care for my patients, to the quality of frames and lenses,” Dr. McReynolds said. Dr. McReynolds’ paperless office is staffed by her mother, receptionist Anne Serkin, and Iona Edstrom, a certified optician with 18 years of experience. Going paperless allows the staff to have a patient’s record at their fingertips quickly. “I believe strongly in patient education, so at the conclusion of each exam, I provide a written report of their diagnosis, visual acuity and treatment,” Dr. McReynolds said. Dr. McReynolds derives the most job satisfaction from ensuring that she has given her patients the most thorough eye examination possible. “It is important to stress that just because you have perfect eyesight, doesn’t mean you don’t need to have the health of your eyes evaluated,” she said. She is excited about 2 new French frame lines that the practice offers exclusively: Dilem and Exalto. Dilem frames have interchangeable temple pieces that allow patients to wear a “fun look” or a “conservative look,” depending on the occasion.

Quality Chiropractic At Back & Neck Care Center Of Webster Groves
Back & Neck Care Center of Webster Groves has been a vital part of the community for 27 years. Founded in 1984 by Dr. Joseph T. Lane, it is the longest established chiropractic practice in Webster Groves. “My wife and I grew up in the St. Louis community,” said Dr. Lane. “Upon graduation from Logan College of Chiropractic, I chose Webster Groves for my practice because it reminded me of Normandy, the community where I was raised.” Dr. Lane, also certified in acupuncture, treats each patient as an individual, tailoring their treatment to that which is suitable for their condition. The staff at the Back & Neck Care Center includes office manager Terri Thompson, who has over 18 years of experience in the chiropractic field; Laura Hastie, who schedules appointments and whose pleasant voice answers the phone; and Lisa Minor, whose upbeat attitude enlivens the Therapy Department. “Many of our patients enjoy the camaraderie we all share with each other,” said Dr. Lane. “We make each patient feel like family and occasionally go beyond to make their experience a positive one.” Dr. Lane would like to thank the Webster Groves community for making their 27th year celebration possible. The Back & Neck Care Center has had the pleasure of providing service to Webster Groves and its surrounding neighborhoods for over a quarter of a century. Their patients generously support their Fan Fare and Coats for Kids programs year after year, offering donations to Webster/Rock Hill Ministries. Dr. Lane and his staff are grateful for these contributions and the opportunity to be a part of this community. To make an appointment at Back & Neck Care Center of Webster Groves, call 968-4696. Martha’s Hands Home Health Provides Love Through Service
Eileen and John Hedrick founded Martha’s Hands on a mission that Eileen was taught as a nursing student by the Sisters of Mercy: “We serve with our hands, love with our hearts and seek the face of our creator in those we serve.” “Our goal is to work with clients and their families to develop customized care plans so our elders can remain independent in their homes as long as possible,” Eileen Hedrick said. Typical services include bathing and dressing assistance, meal preparation/clean-up, medication set-up and reminders, light housekeeping, laundry, errand running, basic companionship or whatever the client needs. Known for its quality service, Martha’s Hands has grown to become one of the premiere private-duty home health agencies in St. Louis. Since 1997, Martha’s Hands has provided over 2,000,000 hours of service. Martha’s Hands now offers basic dental services in the home. These mobile dentistry services, performed by Dr. Dennis McCaffrey, provide customers dental services without having to leave the comfort of their home. Recognized for her efforts, Eileen Hedrick was honored by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield with its Health Care Hero Award and by the YWCA as a Leader of Distinction for her commitment to her community. Martha’s Hands maintains membership in the National Private Duty Association, Missouri Alliance for Home Care, Social Workers in Long Term Care and the Kirkwood/ Des Peres Area Chamber of Commerce. While actual family members have joined the company, the Hedricks consider all their employees like members of their family, working to continue Eileen Hedricks’ original mission of “love through service”.

The Medicine Shoppe In Affton: Patient Care, Not Prescription Volume
Tom and Lynn Schmittgens, owners of The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy® in Affton, provide quality patient care, free delivery and personal service for the same co-pay. Their priority is fulfilling people’s needs, not just filling prescriptions. “As pharmacists, we see patients more than any other healthcare provider. We use this opportunity to address specific health concerns and to provide more complete, consistent healthcare,” Lynn Schmittgens said. “Coordination of care with multiple doctors is vital for your overall health, which is a good reason for using just one pharmacy.” The Schmittgens’ have been serving the community since 1998. Their pharmacy carries home health aids and medical equipment. Both pharmacists are certified in diabetes, asthma and allergy care, and immunizations. Flu shots are now available for $29, but there is no out-of-pocket cost for those who have Medicare. Patients without Medicare will receive a receipt they can submit to their insurance company for reimbursement. As a certified diabetes care center, the Affton Medicine Shoppe offers free diabetes classes on the fourth Monday of each month. It also carries Dr. Comfort diabetic footwear in a variety of custom-fit shoes, boots and slippers, and provides free consultations. “Medicare pays for one new pair of shoes per year with a doctor’s prescription. We examine and measure your feet, and bill your insurance company. It’s an easy process,” said Karen Richard, a certified diabetic shoe fitter. Located at Mackenzie and Heege roads next to Fortel’s Pizza, the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy® is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Medicaid, Medicare Part D, Missouri RX and most insurance plans are accepted. “We enjoy a small community practice and getting to know our patients,” Tom Schmittgens said. “We believe that personal service and frequent contact are crucial to good healthcare. We’re here to help and are happy to answer patient questions.”

Eye Care Associates Blends State-Of-The-Art Medicine, Personal Service
Since 1894, Eye Care Associates of St. Louis has provided patients with comprehensive, hands-on, personalized eye care. Sean Breit, M.D. specializes in cataract surgery; Todd LaPoint, O.D. and Janae Kadlec, O.D. perform routine eye exams and are experts in specialty contact lens fitting; Stephen Wexler, M.D. is one of the most respected LASIK specialists in the country. Eye Care Associates also offers an on-site, fullservice optical shop with a friendly and helpful staff. Throughout its 117-year history, the practice has maintained an affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine. But, according to Dr. Wexler, the field itself has undergone numerous changes. “In the early 1980s, ophthalmology was hospitalbased; today virtually all surgery is outpatient,” he explained. “And then there is LASIK surgery which has dramatically changed the lives of millions of people.” For Wexler, the reward of ophthalmology comes from making a real difference in the lives of his patients and sharing in the joy they feel after a successful procedure. “The evolution of the profession and the positive impact it has made has been remarkable and dramatic,” he said. On Jan. 1, 2011, Eye Care Associates acquired Sappington Eye Centre in Sunset Hills, bringing its exceptional medical, surgical and vision care to patients in South County. Sound Audiology Your Best Choice For Hearing Health Care
Sound Audiology in Sunset Hills, 3860 S. Lindbergh Blvd., Suite 108, offers audiology, hearing healthcare, dizziness evaluations and treatment. Other products and services include hearing aids, assistive listening devices, diagnostic audiology, balance testing and vestibular rehabilitation. Of the 10 audiologists on staff at Sound Audiology, seven have completed their doctoral training, and two are in the process of doctoral training. Dr. Russ Pickett, Director of Audiology at Sound Audiology, said that seeing an audiologist is often less expensive than seeing a traditional “hearing aid dispenser,” but there is a vast difference in education and training. “We do not use traditional hearing aid dispensers as we feel they lack the training and knowledge to correctly treat hearing loss,” Dr. Pickett said. “Many have been to one of the traditional retailers and have come away feeling pressured and that there was a lack of professionalism,” Dr. Pickett said. “I always treat patients with respect and position myself as their advocate in achieving better hearing.” “Hearing aids have become smaller, smarter & more effective. They are fitted utilizing a ‘prescription’ so that the device’s performance is specific to the user.” Dr. Pickett added. At Sound Audiology, a patient has a choice among multiple products to best address his or her particular need. Though 17 percent of adult Americans have some degree of hearing loss, only one in five who could benefit from hearing aids actually use them, Dr. Pickett said. Sound Audiology takes a professional, honest, straightforward approach to hearing problems. Dr. Pickett said the long-time friendships he has developed with patients over the years add to the sense of fulfillment he feels as a helping professional.

Visiting Angels Helps Individuals Stay In Their Home As Long As Possible
When Mary L. Kelly’s parents suffered health crises in 2009, she learned firsthand the challenges of “caring for my family while providing care to my parents, all while juggling my career and other personal commitments,” she said. She learned about Visiting Angels, a non-medical home health agency. Six months later, she left corporate America to own her own Visiting Angels office. “Many individuals want the opportunity to live at home as long as possible,” Kelly said. “We help them realize that opportunity.” Kelly’s staff includes her sister, R.N. Kerri Kelly, and operations manager, Jane Belanger. They provide assistance with daily living activities such as bathing, medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping and errands. “Living at home with assistance can be a much more affordable alternative than moving to an assisted living facility,” Kelly said. Their services also complement adult day services. As no two individuals have the same care requirements, Visiting Angels’ care plans are customized to each client. They can provide one- to 24-hour care on either a shortterm or long-term basis. Kelly finds the most satisfaction in “making a positive impact on the lives we touch by our care, whether that be directly to our care recipients or indirectly to their families.” Kelly frequently receives compliments about the high caliber of her care team and their exceptional service. Jeanne Neuner of Webster Groves highly recommends Visiting Angels. “For over a year, Visiting Angels has provided a number of services to a close relative with understanding of her specific needs, while professionally attending to these needs whether for two hours a week or 40,” Neuner said.

Experience The Latest In Dental Technology At Crestwood Dental Group
James Maxwell, DMD, has been operating Crestwood Dental Group since 2003, though the practice, with previous owners, dates back to 1976. “My wife and I were relocating to St. Louis and we wanted to be close to the activities and events this area offers,” Maxwell said. The utilization of new technologies is ongoing at Crestwood Dental Group. The Waterlase dental laser is used for more painfree and conservative treatment, and can be used to perform many dental procedures with no or little anesthetic. Dr. Maxwell said that laser whitening is the fastest and most effective technology now being used in dental offices. The technology uses an actual laser to whiten teeth, unlike mall or salon services that use only a light, Dr. Maxwell said. Crestwood Dental Group also offers Invisalign, take-home whitening, veneers, crowns, bridges, metal-free white fillings, minor laser surgical procedures and gum therapy. Dr. Maxwell said his goal is to help people achieve dental health with a strong emphasis on prevention and conservative treatment.
