Longtime Optometrist Dr. Karen Rosen Opens Own Practice In South County
After serving patients in South County for more than 25 years, optometrist Dr. Karen Rosen opened her own practice in 2011, providing primary eye care and optical solutions to her patients. I have confidence in my sense of style to provide attractive quality eyewear at reasonable prices, Dr. Rosen said. I also intend to offer eyewear that lets my patients express themselves with some flair and individuality. As an optometrist, Rosen is trained in treating common eye diseases such as pink eye, glaucoma, allergies and dry eye syndrome. There is now an instrument that measures tears and determines whether a patient has significant dry eye. With new treatments, we can now help patients in ways we couldnt before, she said. Over the years, the profession has become much more technical with computers and lasers that make the eye exam easier, more efficient and of higher quality. Lenses and frames have become more attractive and provide better vision than in the past. Rosen gets the greatest satisfaction from having patients bring in their friends and families to see her. Experience The Latest In Dental Technology At Crestwood Dental Group

James Maxwell, DMD, has been operating Crestwood Dental Group since 2003, though the practice, with previous owners, dates back to 1976. My wife and I were relocating to St. Louis and we wanted to be close to the activities and events this area offers, Maxwell said. The utilization of new technologies is ongoing at Crestwood Dental Group. The Waterlase dental laser is used for more painfree and conservative treatment, and can be used to perform many dental procedures with no or little anesthetic. Dr. Maxwell said that laser whitening is the fastest and most effective technology now being used in dental offices. The technology uses an actual laser to whiten teeth, unlike mall or salon services that use only a light, Dr. Maxwell said. Crestwood Dental Group also offers Invisalign, take-home whitening, veneers, crowns, bridges, metal-free white fillings, minor laser surgical procedures and gum therapy. Dr. Maxwell said his goal is to help people achieve dental health with a strong emphasis on prevention and conservative treatment.

The Medicine Shoppe In Affton: Patient Care, Not Prescription Volume

Tom and Lynn Schmittgens, owners of The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy in Affton, provide quality patient care, free delivery and personal service for the same co-pay. Their priority is fulfilling peoples needs, not just filling prescriptions. As pharmacists, we see patients more than any other healthcare provider. We use this opportunity to address specific health concerns and to provide more complete, consistent healthcare, Lynn Schmittgens said. Coordination of care with multiple doctors is vital for your overall health, which is a good reason for using just one pharmacy. The Schmittgens have been serving the community since 1998. Their pharmacy carries home health aids and medical equipment. Both pharmacists are certified in diabetes, asthma and allergy care, and immunizations. Flu shots are now available for $29, but there is no out-of-pocket cost for those who have Medicare. Patients without Medicare will receive a receipt they can submit to their insurance company for reimbursement. As a certified diabetes care center, the Affton Medicine Shoppe offers free diabetes classes on the fourth Monday of each month. It also carries Dr. Comfort diabetic footwear in a variety of custom-fit shoes, boots and slippers, and provides free consultations. Medicare pays for one new pair of shoes per year with a doctors prescription. We examine and measure your feet, and bill your insurance company. Its an easy process, said Karen Richard, a certified diabetic shoe fitter. Located at Mackenzie and Heege roads next to Fortels Pizza, the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy is open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Medicaid, Medicare Part D, Missouri RX and most insurance plans are accepted. We enjoy a small community practice and getting to know our patients, Tom Schmittgens said. We believe that personal service and frequent contact are crucial to good healthcare. Were here to help and are happy to answer patient questions.

Soccer In St. Louis from page 1

U.S. Teams Keough Harry Keough is a soccer legend. One of the greatest American players, winner of five NCAA championships as coach for the St. Louis University Billikens, a starter on the U.S. team that beat England 1-0 in the 1950 World Cup probably the biggest upset in World Cup history Keough has done it all. A later soccer great, Pat McBride, said that when he was a kid and his dad took him to watch the top St. Louis mens teams play at Fairground Park, his dad told him: Watch No. 5. That was Harry Keough, said author Lange. People who played with or against him, or who saw him play, always would say that Harry had an uncanny ability to read the game. In his St. Louis soccer history, Lange describes how Keough grew up a block from the Carondelet YMCA and a few hundred yards from the Mississippi River. From scrimmages in his south side neighborhood, Keough went on to be one of six St. Louisans named to the 1950 U.S. World Cup team. After his playing days, Keough coached at St. Louis Community College at Florissant and later with the soccer Billikens. More than 30 of his Billikens would make it on teams in the North America Soccer League. Today, Keough resides at Bethesda Orchard retirement home in Webster Groves. His son, Ty, who played pro soccer and on the U.S. National Team, is a frequent visitor to his dads place in Webster Groves. Midfielder McBride Then theres that youngster whose dad told him to watch Keough play at Fairground Park. Pat McBride, who now resides in South County off Sappington Road, followed in Keoughs footsteps with a stellar career both on the field and later in coaching. As a player for the Billikens, he was selected as a first team All American in 1964 and 1965. After St. Louis University, McBride played for the U.S. Olympic Team and as a standout for the St. Louis Stars of the National Professional Soccer League (NASL). From 1979 to 1987, McBride had impressive stretches managing the St. Louis Steamers and the Kansas City Comets. However, the seminal memories of McBride go back to his days as a midfielder. Christian Brothers Colleges (CBC) Terry Michler, the winningest boys high school soccer coach in U.S. history, described McBride as an Energizer Bunny before that wild hare even made the scene. You couldnt stop, Pat, recalled Michler. He was always running around causing havoc somewhere. If he got beat, he got back up and covered again. Sunset Hills Denny Long Earlier this month, the soccer community in St. Louis came together in Fenton to honor Denny Long of Sunset Hills. Soccer fans paid him an overdue tribute when the main field at the Anheuser-Busch Center in

Lori Chalupny (17) is considered the finest womens player developed in St. Louis. She starred for the St. Louis Athletica during the clubs brief tenure and captained the U.S. womens National Team.

Fenton was named in honor of Dennis P. Long. Long refers to soccer as Gods game. Raised on a steady diet of watching and playing soccer in south St. Louis, Long went to work as an office boy at Anheuser-Busch (A-B) in 1953. Taking night classes at Washington University, he worked his way up to become chief operating officer of the worlds largest brewery before leaving the company in 1987. While at A-B, Long put the full weight of the brewery behind soccer in St. Louis. For that, Lange devotes a special profile in his book to Long, just as he does for great players such as Keough, McBride and Chalupny. Denny is a crucial figure in the history of St. Louis and U.S. soccer, said Lange. Its been said that A-Bs support of the U.S. Soccer Federation kept the federation solvent in the late 1980s. He also was the driving force behind the construction of the Soccer Park in Fenton.

Had he continued as the No. 2 person at Anheuser-Busch, St. Louis would have had a team in Major League Soccer right from the start and eventually would have had a soccer-specific stadium, noted Lange. There has been no one since Denny Long with the passion and the power to do that in St. Louis. These days, Long and his son, Patrick, own and operate Sams Steakhouse near Grants Farm in South County. Long continues to be a fan of youth soccer in St. Louis. In his book, Lange laments that St. Louis can no longer lay claim as the nations soccer capital. For example, Kansas City has surpassed St. Louis in soccer and recently opened a $200 million soccer stadium. Lange offers advice on how to return St. Louis as a dominant force in U.S. soccer. Past soccer greats many who live in our own back yard are certainly an inspiration for the future of St. Louis soccer.

Friendship Village Plans Expansion

by Joe Leicht
Friendship Village, a facility that has been providing three levels of care for seniors for more than 30 years, has on its drawing board a phased expansion of what would be its 52-acre site at 12503 Village Circle Drive off of Old Gravois Road. Representatives of the senior-care facility tested the waters by presenting a concept plan a step preliminary to any zoning changes or design plats to the Sunset Hills Planning and Zoning Commission at its September meeting. Brandon Harp of the engineering firm CDG explained to the commission his clients wants to add to Friendship Villages campus by rezoning 12 residential acres it purchased this year as planned development mixed use (PDMU). An amendment to the Sunset Hills Comprehensive Plan would be needed for the zoning change. The concept is to reposition the entire 52-acre campus that would have a 10- to 20-year implementation of the different phases. The proposal would create a community fee for the residents, as well as the need to renovate the facility to make it more marketable and remain competitive, Harp said. If approval is granted, new ground would not be broken on the site until market studies indicate the time is right. The first phase would be to realign Pointe Drive and Village Circle Drive to create a sense of entry into the Sunset Pointe subdivision, Harp said. New construction would include 70 independentliving units housed in a multi-level building and more villas. No new development on the acreage west of Sunset Pointe or west of the Fountain View facility is included in the plan. Residents Kelly Imo and Jerry Larson expressed concerns about increasing building density and possible traffic issues. The commission voted 8-2 to signal initial approve of the concept plan.

Eye Care Associates Blends State-Of-The-Art Medicine, Personal Service

Since 1894, Eye Care Associates of St. Louis has provided patients with comprehensive, hands-on, personalized eye care. Sean Breit, M.D. specializes in cataract surgery; Todd LaPoint, O.D. and Janae Kadlec, O.D. perform routine eye exams and are experts in specialty contact lens fitting; Stephen Wexler, M.D. is one of the most respected LASIK specialists in the country. Eye Care Associates also offers an on-site, fullservice optical shop with a friendly and helpful staff. Throughout its 117-year history, the practice has maintained an affiliation with Washington University School of Medicine. But, according to Dr. Wexler, the field itself has undergone numerous changes. In the early 1980s, ophthalmology was hospitalbased; today virtually all surgery is outpatient, he explained. And then there is LASIK surgery which has dramatically changed the lives of millions of people. For Wexler, the reward of ophthalmology comes from making a real difference in the lives of his patients and sharing in the joy they feel after a successful procedure. The evolution of the profession and the positive impact it has made has been remarkable and dramatic, he said. On Jan. 1, 2011, Eye Care Associates acquired Sappington Eye Centre in Sunset Hills, bringing its exceptional medical, surgical and vision care to patients in South County. Board OKs Tax Rates

by Eileen P. Duggan
At its Sept. 27 meeting, the Crestwood Board of Aldermen gave final approval to the 2011 property tax rates. Since the first reading Sept. 13, the Board of Equalization figures changed, increasing the commercial property tax rate to 38.30 cents per $100 assessed valuation. Although it is more than the rate estimated on Sept. 13, it is lower than the 2010 rate of 40.6 cents. In other news, the board: Postponed final approval of a conditional use permit for Anytime Fitness, which proposes a 24hour health and fitness facility in Watson Plaza. The bill received preliminary approval by a vote of 5-2 on first reading. Passed 6-1 a bill leaving the gross receipts tax rate on electric service the same, reflecting a rate increase by Ameren Missouri. By not rolling back rates to the previous level, the city could gain a net revenue increase of about $25,000. Approved a Memorandum of Understanding between the city and Local 2665, International Association for Firefighters, affirming the labor contract with the citys firefighters for a three-year period beginning Oct. 1. Proclaimed Oct. 9 to 15 as Fire Prevention Week in Crestwood. Approved the appointments of Donald Koppy and former Alderman Steve Nieder to the planning and zoning commission and Keith Street to the fire board. Cancelled the Dec. 27 Board of Aldermen meeting for the traditional holiday break.
