This is a simple and interesting science magic trick involving fire and water.

All you need is water, a glass, a plate, and a couple of matches. Pour water into a plate, light a match in the center of the dish and cover it with a glass. The water will be drawn into the glass. Match and Water Trick Materials

How to Perform the Trick 1. Pour water into the plate. I colored the water with food coloring to make it easier to see. 2. Bend one of the matches so that you can set it in the water. Secure the match so that it is upright by setting a quarter or other small heavy object on the end of the match stick. 3. Use the second match to light the match that you placed on the plate. 4. Immediately invert a glass over the burning match. 5. The water will flow into the glass and will remain in the glass even after the match has been extinguished. How It Works

Less pressure is exerted against the water. The heat of the flame imparts energy to the gas trapped under the glass. light a match in the center of the dish and cover it with a glass. Pour water into a shallow dish. raising its pressure and pushing against the water. The water will be drawn into the glass. When the flame is extinguished the air cools. allowing it to flow into the glass. .

Another way to perform this trick is to pour the gas that you just made into an empty glass and then pour the apparently empty glass over the candle flame. the candle will go out when you pour 'air' onto it. This easy science trick demonstrates what happens when air is replaced with carbon dioxide. How to Blow Out the Candle with Chemistry Simply pour the gas from the glass onto the candle. The carbon dioxide is heavier than air.You know you can put out a candle flame by pouring water on it. . you produce carbon dioxide. This suffocates the flame and it goes out. you are pouring out the carbon dioxide. which will sink and replace the (oxygen-containing) air surrounding the candle with carbon dioxide. The flame will be extinguished. so it will sit in the bottom of the glass. mix together a little baking soda and vinegar. Candle Science Magic Trick Materials     a lit candle a transparent glass (so people can see what is inside the glass) baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) vinegar (weak acetic acid) Set up the Magic Trick In the glass. In this science magic trick or demonstration. When you pour the gas from glass onto the candle. How the Candle Trick Works When you mix baking soda and vinegar together. Question Blow out a candle by pouring a glass of what appears to be air onto the flame.

whichever comes first). Run the bottle under very hot tap water. so the only force that would cause the egg to enter the bottle is gravity. the air pressure outside the bottle will push the egg into the container. If you cool the air. the egg will be pushed into the bottle. its diameter is too large for it to slip inside. When the flame goes out. the paper will burn until the oxygen is consumed (or the paper is consumed. making it appear to jump on the mouth of the bottle. It's easy to see how the pressure changes when you chill the bottle. Egg in a Bottle Materials    peeled hard-boiled egg (or soft-boiled. increasing the air pressure. The pressure of the air inside and outside of the bottle is the same. there is enough positive pressure outside the bottle to push the egg inside. I have heard of this being done using liquid nitrogen. You set an egg on top of a bottle (as pictured). When the temperature inside and outside the bottle is the same. The egg is pushed in as the air inside the bottle is chilled. Immerse the bottle in a very cold liquid. but why is the egg pushed into the bottle when heat is applied? When you drop burning paper into the bottle. the pressure of the air increases. If you use too large of an egg. Perform the Demonstration    Method 1: Set a piece of paper on fire and drop it into the bottle. Method 3: Set the egg on the bottle. if a yolk mess interests you) flask or jar with opening slightly smaller than the diameter of the egg paper/lighter or very hot water or very cold liquid In a chemistry lab. you can use a glass apple juice bottle. it will get sucked into the bottle. When you change the temperature of the air inside the bottle. If you are trying this demonstration at home. How It Works If you just set the egg on the bottle. I used a Sobe™ soft drink bottle. the pressure decreases. Now there is less air in the bottle than when you started. If you can lower the pressure inside the bottle enough. As it cools. the egg will get pushed into the bottle. If you have a constant volume of air and heat it. the egg settles down and seals the mouth of the bottle. I recommend a medium egg for the Sobe™ bottle. .The egg in a bottle demonstration is an easy chemistry or physics demonstration you can do at home or in the lab. As the air cools. you change the pressure of the air inside the bottle. Gravity isn't sufficient to pull the egg inside the bottle. The heated air pushes the egg out of the way. Set the egg on top of the bottle (small side pointed downward). Combustion heats the air in the bottle. but that sounds dangerous (could shatter the glass). so it exerts less pressure. Method 2: Set the egg on the bottle. An extra-large egg gets wedged in the bottle. Set the bottle on the counter. this demonstration is most commonly performed using a 250-ml flask and a medium or large egg. Warmed air will escape around the egg. You change the temperature of the air inside the container either by dropping a piece of burning paper into the bottle or by directly heating/cooling the bottle. I recommend trying ice water. Air pushes the egg into the bottle. but stuck (resulting in a gooey mess if the egg was soft-boiled).
