Taking a Stand Against Human Traf cking

estimate is 27 million worldwide. Some of those slaves are

Did you know there are approximately 27 million people
worldwide who are enslaved and exploited? And according
to the Polaris Project (one of the leading anti-trafcking
organizations in the United States), an estimated 18,000 people are traf-
cked into the United States each year. As someone who wants to believe
the U.S. isnt susceptible to these issues, its disheartening to hear that it is,
in fact, happening right in our own backyard. Not only that, but as contrib-
uting writer and nail technician Michelle Pratt has discovered, it might
even be closer to home than I thought.
Sure, human trafcking might not be a subject you expect to see in the
pages of NAILS, but it is happening in some nail salons right here in the
United States. And thanks to one New York-based salon owner who is
shedding light on the sad situation, maybe as an industry we can take a
stand and do something about it. Pratt tells the story of human trafcking
through Tomilynn Randos activism. For more information on what Rando
is doing to make a difference, I urge you all to read Taking a Stand Against
Human Trafcking on page 116.
There are two main types of slaves when talking about this issue: labor
slaves and sex slaves. There is evidence of both types happening in salons.
With the rst, salon workers might be physically abused or forced to work
long hours with little or no pay. With the second, workers might be told
they are being hired to work at a nail salon, when in fact it turns out to be a
massage parlor where women are forced into prostitution.
Sadly, I cant help but worry that this will be another polarizing topic
in the ongoing debate of Asian versus non-Asian salons in the industry.
But instead of having an us versus them or laissez faire attitude, I urge
everyone to come together on this topic. As Pratt writes, Techs on both
sides can agree on the basics: unlicensed, unsafe, unsanitary salons should
not exist regardless of the race and country of origin of the owner or
nail tech. Its important that we all form one united voice to stop modern
day slavery in our industry. The bottom line is that women are being lured
to our country with the promise of jobs, or theyre being forced into labor
with the threat of deportation.
Rando is a modern day abolitionist and she urges others in the industry to
join her. She says, Trafckers are exploiting our industry to force women
into modern-day slavery. Lets work together to be their voice and their
advocates. Shes set up a website (www.freemynailtech.com) with a plan to
get involved. As hard as it is to read this story without being shocked to learn
that something like this is happening in our own industry, Im proud to see
one of our own stepping up and taking a stand to protect the liberties of other
nail techs working in the United States no matter the circumstances. Get
involved. Take a stand. Make a difference.
Is Human Trafcking
a Nail Industry Issue?

on your mind
for sharing your story with us. I am
so sorry that your mom had to go
through what she did and I know what
turmoil you have gone through in the
past three years. My heart and prayers
are with you and your family.
I love the way you made us all feel
as nail techs sometimes we have to
be reminded that we can be very
powerful and inuential with our
clients, but most of all we can make
them feel good! And that is one of the
most rewarding things to me about
doing my job!
Thank you for sharing and for
reminding us how important we are to
our clients.

The latest issue of NAILS Magazine
landed on my desk and I popped open
the beautiful ballet slipper cover. As
I ipped through a few pages I came
across your monthly letter. As a
supplier to the industry, it is usually
the rst thing I read to keep a pulse on
the nail world.
As I read this months article,
my heart went out to you and your
family. My father suffered with
cancer and through it all he tried
to joke and enjoy the moments life
brought so your story struck a chord
with me. I think your point about
personal touch with nail techs, or
even reaching out to let someone
know their words touched their
heart, is true and powerful.
Thinking of you and know you
You and I share a similar story. I lost my
mom to cancer on February 8, 2011. I
am still stinging from it. Ive done nails
for 40 years, so needless to say I can do
what I do with my eyes closed. I worked
the day she died and only missed one
work day. My son and daughter and
my clients couldnt believe I was able to
work. I have longevity with most of my
clients, so I knew all I needed to do was
show up. I astounded myself, because
my work was excellent the whole week.
I think working made me focus and it
kept my mind occupied.
Our family got through it because
my youngest sister took the time to
care for our mom. I cant sing her
praises enough. Kathryn did 90% of
the care-giving. My mom also received
the many services you mentioned. I am
convinced many of these workers are
angels in disguise.
I have buried nearly a dozen clients
in my career and still miss them. They
came until their health would not allow
them, and I had the privilege of getting
quite a few of them ready for heaven.
I wanted their hair and nails and
make-up to look great. I did the same
for my mom. It was not as hard as
some might think. Your editors letter
touched my heart, and I shed some
tears because now when someone has
to bury their mother I can say, I really
know how you feel. Thank you for
sharing your very personal loss.

honored with three
Maggie Awards
from the Western
Publications Association (WPA). This year the
Maggie Awards celebrated 60 years of honoring
excellence to individuals and companies whose work
is deemed The Best of the West in a wide variety of
publishing categories. These three awards give NAILS
a grand total of 26 Maggies.
This year NAILS won for Best How-To Article/Trade
(Have You Seen My Nail Art Gallery? by Hannah
Lee, June 2010), Best Website/Trade (www.nailsmag.
com), and Best Social Media/Trade & Consumer.
Were especially excited to win for all the hard work
weve put into building our web presence into what it
is today. The site is amazing (if we do say so our-
selves) with so much content. It truly is THE place for
you to nd everything you ever needed to know about
nails and the nail industry. Wed like to thank our
outstanding in-house web team led by Sam Kim for
creating such great sites for us work on.
Wed be remiss if we didnt also thank you, our
NAILS readers and NAILS online users. Its because of
all of you that we can boast about 53,000+ Facebook
(facebook.com/nailsmag) fans, more than 3,000
Twitter (twitter.com/nailsmag) followers, and more
than 30,000 nail art pictures on Nail Art Gallery
(nailartgallery.nailsmag.com). Its awe-inspiring to see
the interaction and community-building on our site.
We love our print publication. Dont get us wrong,
that will always be our pride and joy. But with all that
we can ofer to nail techs and salon owners in real
time on the web, were thrilled to be honored by our
peers for a job well-done.

Young Nails ManiQ
Is Soldier-Proof
In February, Young Nails was contacted by SPC Amy
Feltzin, a soldier currently deployed in Afghanistan.
Specialist Feltzin is also a licensed nail tech from
Southern Oregon. She wrote:
The art of nail sculpture is a passion of mine and
I have been blessed to be able to get stationed here in
Afghanistan with many female soldiers who are willing and excited to
get their nails and toes done by me to help make them feel good in their
uniform. We are the 1249th Engineer Battalion.
While at home in Southern Oregon I am a huge advocate of Young
Nails products and use them religiously on my clients. I am writing to
you today to ask if your company wouldnt mind donating some nail
supplies to the female Soldiers of the 1249th Engineer Battalion here
in Sharana, Afghanistan, so that I can do their nails for them.
Once Young Nails CEO, Habib Salo, heard of this request, he knew
immediately that the companys new maniQ gel color was the perfect
product for the battalion. So he quickly dispatched the new maniQ
collection, a 45-watt LED lamp, and a dufe-bag full of les, accesso-
ries and Lomasi skin care products to Specialist Feltzin. He e-mailed
her, just so shed know the care package was on its way. She responded
gratefully to Salos e-mail: We just want to express our heartfelt grati-
tude for your support for the troops and for us in specic. And even if
this didnt work out, just the time for your response alone is greatly ap-
preciated. We could not do what we do here without the support from
our families, friends, and fellow Americans.
After quite a few weeks, the package nally arrived in Afghanistan,
safe and sound. The soldiers were happy to have their nails done by
Specialist Feltzin, who said, We actually just did some fabulous nails
last night! Thanks so much for everything! We love the new maniQ
Gel Polish! It is the greatest invention totally soldier-proof!

Bloomingnails
on the road
DIY BOUTIQUE SALON In her 23 years as a nail
tech, Michele McLendon has worked in all sorts
of salons. But for the last two and a half years,
shes been the owner and sole nail tech at Bloom-
ingnails Urban Nail & Skin Care Studio. When
she took over the space, located in the downstairs
of a cute little house, she did all the work herself
painting, installing the wood panel ooring,
and even installing a new toilet. The decor is
light and airy and in addition to the mani-pedi
room, there is a reception area, a room for skin
care and massage (she rents space to an estheti-
cian and a massage therapist), and a bathroom.
ONLINE AFICIONADO I booked my service
over e-mail and the day before I got a reminder
e-mail from Salon Transcripts that required
I click on a link to conrm my appointment.
McLendon uses Salon Transcripts for automatic
e-mail reminders, but she still prefers handling
the booking herself. Once I got to the salon, I
saw why McLendon had been so fast to respond
to my appointment request she has a laptop
and iPad at her workstation. Shes found online
advertising and review sites like CitySearch and
Yelp to be very helpful in marketing her salon.
GEL EDUCATION McLendon has been a Bio
Sculpture educator for nine years and 75% of
her clients wear gels. I decided to add color
gel to my Classic Pedicure and she offered me
a choice from what looked like at least 100
colors. She performed a no-nonsense, incred-
ibly thorough pedicure on my dry, cracked
heels and the gel application was denitely
quicker than a standard polish application.
McLendon often teaches Bio Sculpture classes
on Mondays either in her salon or elsewhere
around the state of Texas. Its always nice to
get a service from an educator who really
stands behind her products.
> McLendon has two regular male clients,

licensed 23 years ago, she only had to

the corner and she has a referral rela-

Hats Of For 3-D Art
A nail art design, especially 3-D art, can be a great way to showcase
just how talented you are as a tech. This tassel display, from Oksana
Cobb, is elegantly framed for any customer to see. The item can be
a great conversation piece as well, helping to inspire clients to allow
their creatively-talented techs more freedom to try more nail art designs.
Heres how Cobb crafted these nails:
1. Make a clear acrylic or gel nail in a stiletto shape and use a 180-grit le to-
gether with a 220-grit le to rene the shape. Buf it, then cover the surface
with a nude acrylic color.
2. Glue seven white-glitter stones vertically up the middle of the nail.
3. Decorate the nail with a comma-like design on both sides with a pure white
sculpting acrylic.
4. Embellish the design with tiny golden or silver decorative dots. Cover with top
coat for additional and long lasting shine.
Finish your display by surrounding the mounted nails with a gold braid and tassel
in a matching frame. >>>

AND
Q
I dont use tips Ive never been a fan. I build my pink-and-whites from scratch
and have always been much happier with how they look and wear my clients
are too. But how can I make a correct C-curve without a tip and achieve an oval
shape? I have several clients with an oval shape but I cant get them this pointy
and they end up having straighter sidewalls.
I was not a tip fan myself for many years, but now with the well-less tips you
can create a shape that looks like a sculpt but is easy to apply. Most come with
built-in C-curves, and if you apply acrylic you can squeeze in an even deeper
C-curve.
As with anything new it may take extra time until you perfect them, but once
you do you will like them. I truly believe every nail tech should be able to sculpt
as well as put a tip on. The benet of a good tip job, I feel, can offset the work of
a sculpt because it takes less time and always has that perfect smile line.
For the oval shaping I have a system. I use a stiletto tip, and after I cut the tips
length, I le a at spot in the center of the tip as a guideline, which helps make
the shape consistent. I do all my shaping on the tip before I add the product too.
It makes for less work and a smoother nail to le at the end.
I use stiletto tips for round nails as well because they have the shape already
built in and it is easier to shape round or oval. Try not to le the sides in for
the shape at the smile line. Do that a little below the ears. I start by rounding
the tip rst then I bring the sides in more to taper the entire tip. Another little
secret is after Ive done my shaping on each nail Ill compare it to all the others. I
measure index, middle, and ring rst to make sure the length on each nail bed is
the same and that each white tip is the same so they all match. Then I measure
the thumbs and pinkies against each other to check they are in proportion.

Can UV nail dryers dry polish without a UV top coat?
UV nail dryers are more commonly referred to as UV nail lights. The UV
light being emitted by the UV lamps does nothing to dry nail polish, but the
heat from the light unit itself will assist in drying nail polish. A more effective
nail polish dryer would be a heat light with a small fan or some apparatus that
has heating capabilities as well as a fan to circulate the air. A nail dryer that
does not use UV light would be more economical than using a UV light unit to
dry the nail polish.

Take an exotic island escape with China Glaze
this summer with a tropical, shimmering
rainbow of bright brilliant colors. Mix and
match these hot hues to add a candy-like pop to that summer
manicure and pedicure. The Island Escape Collections colors
include Blue Iguana, Senorita Bonita, Electric Pineapple,
and 108 Degrees (all used in this demo), as well as Papaya
Punch and Cha Cha Cha.
1. Start with two coats of your base color and let it dry
completely.
2. Using your favorite China Glaze colors, create spots in
any size and shape you like.
3. Taking a darker opaque shade, frame the individual
spots on each side with imperfect lines and shapes. A
skinny nail art brush is best but toothpicks and eyeliner
brushes also make great tools.
4. Allow the design to dry completely. Finish the look by
adding a top coat to prevent smearing and to prolong
wear.
5. Mix and match shades and textures to personalize your
China Glaze leopard mani.

Arts and Crafts

Global IBD educator Brenda Skermont couldnt wait to try out the
new Gelac gel polish when it launched last year. Within 15 minutes
of receiving it she started experimenting to find out exactly what she
could and couldnt do with it. And what she discovered was that it
did pretty much everything regular polish did plus more. Here she
explains how she combines Gelac colors to make this dco-polish
design, which works like decoupage for the nails.
Step 1 Follow the prep steps for the Gelac polish application on the
nail and apply two color coats. Cure each coat for two minutes in
the UV lamp.
Step 2 Apply three or four different gel polish colors to a medium
weight plastic. (Skermont uses craft bags.) Cure in a UV lamp for
two minutes. Apply one coat for a transparent effect. For a solid
effect, apply two coats.
Step 3 After the gel polish is removed from the lamp use scissors
to cut the plastic coated with the gel into different shapes. Cut your
shapes so that the edges are easy to separate from the plastic as
shown.
Step 4 Place the pieces randomly on the nail, overlapping the
colors. The pieces will be slightly sticky and elastic. Be sure to
stretch them snugly to the nail.
Step 5 Once all the pieces are in place use small scissors to trim
the excess away. Use your finger and smooth the pieces around
the edges of the nail. Apply one to two coats of Gelac Top Coat
to the nail for an ultra-smooth and shiny finish.

Stacy Senecal, owner of Libelle in Geneva, N.Y., came up with an
attractive and convenient method of displaying color choices in
her salon. In her case, she showcases Shellac gel-polish, but this
display works just as well for other gel-polishes or for traditional
gels or polishes. I used polish wheels and created an attractive
front by printing of a design on cardstock and cutting a circle to t
the inside of the wheel. With a ne-tipped marker, I wrote the name of the color
next to each tip. A magnet was cut and placed on the back, and the color wheel is
displayed on a magnetic dry erase board. The board is hung next to the table where
the clients can see and decide
on their colors while their nails
are being done. The colors come
down easily to get a closer look,
Senecal explains.
Senecal also includes Shellac
layered color combinations, for
which she makes up unique
names. (For instance, Cream
Puf + Iced Coral = Ice Cream.)
She then keeps a binder beside
her table with a sheet for each
wheel with a list of the color
names and, if its a layered color,
how it was made. This method
has proved much better than
letting clients blindly create their
own color combos.

E-mail it to Sree.Roy@bobit.com and check back here for an expert answer.
A client of mine wants Minxed toenails, but I think her pinky toe is way
too small for the coating. How should I handle this so she can still get a
Minx-like nail style?
There are some pinky toes that are either non-existent or way too
small for the Minx to actually adhere. In these cases, I will use a polish
that complements the Minx. If Im using Silver or Gold Lightning Minx,
then Ill use silver or gold metallic polish. If Im using a pattern like
Pink Cheetah, then a black-on-pink toe could work just use whatever
the most prominent color is of the Minx. It blends right in and no one
notices. You can also get creative. For instance I once used a gold-and-
white hounds-tooth patterned Minx on a client, then on the clients
next visit I couldnt for the life of me remove her pinky toe Minxuntil
I nally realized that I had painted it white with a little splash of gold to
blend in with the Minx pattern. It looked so good I didnt even know it
was polish.

Its not so much what
you say, but how you
say it that makes a last-
ing impression on clients.
A consultant for Summit Salon Business Center (www.summitsalon.
com) and NAILS blogger (blogs.nailsmag.com/coach), nail tech Jill
Wilson learned this basic tenet of communication many years ago from
one of her mentors, Michael Cole. Michael taught me there are three
parts of communication and each part delivers a message, she says.
> Verbal communication accounts for 5% of communication. Verbal
communication is what we say, the words we use, and our vocabu-
lary. Cole recommends we learn to deepen our vocabulary. Use words
like healthy, high-gloss, smooth, and shiny. These are the words that
pique your clients interest; they get them engaged.
> Extra-verbal communication is the way you say it your tone, pitch,
and pace. This accounts for 35% of communication. Make sure you
are aware of how your voice sounds and the rate at which you speak
your words. Speak clearly, enunciate, and sound excited, positive, and
self-assured.
> Non-verbal communication is your body language, facial expres-
sion, and image. It accounts for 60% of communication. This speaks
louder than words. Your client is judging you mostly by your appear-
ance. Non-verbal statements account for the largest part of the rst
impression and you havent even spoken a word yet. >>>

When youre not getting any
media coverage, whose fault is it?
According to Jennifer Wezensky,
president of JW Public Relations
(www.jwprtoolkits.com), a Michigan-
based boutique PR rm specializing in
helping small businesses garner positive media coverage, the blame may lie di-
rectly at your door. Below, she indenties ve areas in which you may be falling
short in your PR pursuits.
You never reach out. If you think journalists are preoccupied, youre right.
Theyre always under pressure to meet deadlines, and a hundred different things
are vying for their attention every day. So if you never attempt to get some of their
attention to you, then you have little chance for media coverage. A well-
thought-out press release or media pitch, given to the right journalists
or editors, will go a long way to keeping you on top of their minds or
at least pretty close to it.
Youre unprepared. The luckiest people are those who are always
prepared enough to grab opportunities when they appear. If you dont
have a media kit and media page to provide information to interested
journalists, if you dont know whats happening around you that might
be relevant to your business, if you take forever to return calls or set up inter-
views, then youre out of luck. Always be ready with some of the basic PR tools
you need to get free publicity.
You dont create your own news. If your business is interesting
enough to attract customers, then its interesting enough for the me-
dia. But often, you have to package it that way. Regularly mine your
business for media-sexy stories, and pitch these. Sometimes, you have
to create your own news. Organize events, participate in fundraisers, conduct a
study, or partner with more prominent businesses and organizations.
Youre not connecting with the right journalists. If youre pitching to the
wrong reporters and editors, then your story will never get told. Dont send your
media pitch to the business editor, for example, if your services are
more suitable for the lifestyle section. Also, dont send out a template
pitch to everyone on your media list. Take the time to personalize and
customize each one, so youre addressing what each reporter or editor
is most interested in. Know which media outlets and journalists reach your target
audience and connect with them. With social media, its now easier than ever to
get direct access to journalists.
Youre out of touch with whats newsworthy. Any sort of media
work is difcult if you dont have your nger on the pulse of the media.
That is, if you dont know what media are publishing and broadcasting,
how will you know what theyre looking for? Consume media and observe which
stories get publicity. Youll be surprised at how many opportunities you can spot
this way.

Youre Not
Getting Media
Attention

Home Study Course, nail industry veteran Trish Rock
shares expert knowledge, guidance, and proven tools
to build a strong and lasting salon full of clients. Many
nail technicians do not seek advice or help when they
are in need of more clients, says Rock.
It places a lot of pressure on them, their

few simple systems in place and a better way
of thinking, business can be improved in a relatively short period of time.
The Gloss System Home Study Course is a step-by-step guide that will help nail techs
discover how to:
> Attract more of their ideal clients
> Charge what they are worth for increased prots
> Improve relationships with clients and family
> Have less stress and worry
The system includes a workbook/binder, ve audio CDs, a business assessment, 30

I like to show my clients the colors
that are popular on the runways and
the new products that I offer in my
salon rst as well as what the current
trends are. I have a young clientele
and staying fresh is important to
them. Once I have talked up the latest
styles and trends they usually will
suggest something similar for them-
selves and that way Ive let them make
their own decisions and I get to apply
a little of my own artistic air.

Amy Cerioni

It depends on the client. Most of my
clients ask whats new and what I can
create for them thats unique and fun. I
do have a few clients who want full
control of the design on their nails. Even
if I suggest something, they feel the need
to put their own twist on the design.
Robyn Schwartz

It varies depending on the clients
personality. If she is receptive to my
opinion, then I give it. But I dont want
to push her into a style she doesnt
like. Thankfully there are very few nail
styles that are out of date per se. For
important events like weddings and
proms, I think a professional opinion
should always matter.
Bri McCloud
Cloud Nine Nails, Athens, Tenn.
For new guests, I ask them about the
length and shape they prefer. I also
ask about what they do with their
hands. For instance, if the client works
on a computer all day, Ill suggest a
square/squoval shape for strength. Ill
then shape one ngernail and ask the
client if thats what she had in mind
before I proceed. Even if I dont per-
sonally like what the client has asked
for, Ill make the best-looking ugly
nails that she will love!
Laura Moore
Tocaloma Spa and Salon, Phoenix
As much as they can handle they are
wearing the nails, but they are also
telling people you did them. Im game
for helping them pick a color, a shape,
length, everything! Thats the whole
point of the consultation.
Holly L. Schippers
FingerNailFixer, Bussey, Iowa
I suggest what would look good but
clients tend to take several appoint-
ments to change what theyre used to.
Often the ladies who wear long square
harsh nails let me round the corners
rst, then reduce length, then on the
third visit they fall in love with their
natural-looking, longer-lasting nails.

Elizabeth Ashton Ayurvedic
Nail Spas services incorp-
orate a traditional alternative
medicine system from India that dates
back thousands of years. Owner and
manicurist Elizabeth Ashton is certied
in ayurveda and focuses her downtown
Long Beach, Calif., salons hand and foot
treatments on wellness, beauty, and
enjoyment.
The reason I chose the area is
because its one of a kind, Ashton
says. In addition to being located in
one of the fastest-growing and
trendiest parts of Long Beach, the
salon is two blocks away from the
ocean and the Long Beach Convention
Center. The newly created bike lane in
front of the shop has also helped bring
in trafc from neighboring high-end
clothing boutiques and art galleries.
Ashton originally purchased the
space in July 2009 and spent the next
nine months working with her family to
transform it into a nail salon in their
spare time. Her husband Brenzil
oversaw construction, her daughter
Paradise helped create the salons
decor, and her son Byron, a safety
engineer, took care of the safety rules
and business regulations. I worked
from paycheck to paycheck to put my
business together, she says. It was a
little tough but I decided that this is
what I want and whatever it takes to get
it, Im going to do.
Previously, Ashton ran a mobile salon
called Pretty Nails on Wheels for more
than 30 years while also working as a
train dispatcher. She also managed two
salons in Inglewood, Calif., before
getting licensed as a nail tech. Ashton
says her passion for nails stems from the
times she spent taking care of her
familys nails when she was younger.
The salon is currently appointment-
only as Ashton is the only manicurist on
staff and serves one client at a time. She
does have three on-call manicurists she
calls in for different events. Ive served
up to six or seven clients at a time when
I do spa parties. Ill have an assistant
there and thats all I need, she says.
Im about quality work. Its not about
the quantity thats fast; its about the
quality of the person and the quality of
the work and your products.
SERENE SETTING Its calm, relaxing,
personal, and intimate, Ashton says of

the salons decor. I like it because it
gives you that one-on-one touch, feel,
and privacy with clients. Her daughter
Paradise incorporated furniture and
artwork from local vendors to help
enhance the salons light atmosphere
while friend Jn Montoya of Jn
Montoya Design created the logo and
branding strategy.
Ray Montoya, father of designer
Jn, assisted Ashtons husband Brenzil
with all of the salons construction and
painting. It worked out beautifully,
she adds. I have an Indian theme as
far as the colors and the
materials to tie in the
ayurvedic theme, but it
also has a regal look.
The salon features two
chairs for pedicures and
two manicure stations as
well as partially frosted
windows to give clients a
sense of privacy. Ashton
explains that the salons
pedicure stations do not
use whirlpool baths in
order to avoid using recycled water on
clients. Considering that most clients
request natural nail services, she also
avoids using an electric le as much as
possible unless a client comes in with
acrylics or requests it specically.
In addition to the calming
atmosphere and music, a large white
bookcase stocked with a diverse
assortment of books is another main
point of interest for clients. Im making
a little library for them so theyll have
something to read. If they come in for
their service, they may check out a
book and theyll bring it back to the
next service, Ashton says. Were
getting ready to do a book club.
Clients also appreciate the fact that
there isnt a language barrier between
them, she says. They want to be able to
have a conversation and to be able to tell
someone how their day went. Clients
also compliment her on the salons
tidiness and pleasing smells. Business
is great, Ashton says. The area is
coming alive and Im a part of that.
THERAPEUTIC SERVICES FROM THE
EAST Incorporating ayurvedic
techniques into the salons service menu
gives clients a wide variety of choices for
customizing their wellness treatments.
With ingredients like chickpea our,
fruits, and sesame seed oils, Ashton
makes a point to include as many
natural, edible products into the salons
treatments as possible.
Manicures range from $25 for a
quick service to upwards of $100 for
the Signature Treatment, while
pedicures range from $35 to $150.
Add-on services range from $4 to
upwards of $100 and include hot
stones, callus treatments, acrylics, silk
wraps, gel polish manicures, Minx
nails, and gel overlays. The salon also
offers eight different seasonal
treatments throughout the year, with
two special avors for each season. I
value my time with clients, Ashton
says. I use excellent products but I
am the main product. Theyre coming
for my service.
Some of the most popular treatments
include the customizable Paradise mani-
pedis and the Indian Therapy services,
as well as follow-up maintenance on
hands and feet. Another very popular
service is the Padabhyanga, which
involves two people massaging a clients
hands and feet at the same time.
Usually when I have something like
that, Ill call in a massage therapist,
Ashton says. I do have an exclusive
massage therapist that I work with who
comes in from time to time to help me.

For many salon owners, their only attempt at
Internet marketing will have been a website
produced at some considerable cost by a teamof
clever techies a few years ago. But the Internet is developing
at a break-neck speed, and every salon should have an
understanding of the opportunities it offers their business,
and the simple tools that are now available.
My Salon Guru Internet marketing checklist is intended
to help salon owners assess both their understanding
and use of the web. Starting with your rst cautious steps
onto the web, it follows a chronological sequence of using
new tools and grasping new opportunities as you grow in
condence and knowledge.
Internet marketing is no longer a quick battle to get
a salon website live, it is a long campaign with daily
skirmishes. However, the rewards are higher salon
sales income, more loyal clients, and cost-effective
marketing spending.
This is a very condensed three-year campaign to create
the perfect online marketing plan for your salon in just a few
key steps. The process is more involved and there are many
other issues to consider. But, the rst task is to identify
where you are on this roadmap and determine if you have
the drive to take the next step.

TRAINEE SALONS
will have dipped their toe into
the water with a website that is
now some years old and seldom
has new content. They may be
unaware of their visitor numbers
and are unsure of their search
engine ranking for keywords.
Install Google Analytics or
a similar measurement tool.
It will let you measure traffic
to your website and see
where site visitors came
from, what pages they visit,
and what brought them to
your website.
Start a Facebook page for
your salon. Facebook has
revolutionized the way people
talk, and your salon needs
to be part of their daily
conversation.
Analyze your search rankings
using analytics and improve
your website pages to gain
higher positions. Better ranks
equals more traffic.
GRADUATE SALONS
will have both a website and
Facebook page with regular new
content and engaging messages
to sell your services and pro-
mote your salon.
Capture client e-mail ad-
dresses using forms on your
website or Facebook page,
and plan e-mail marketing
campaigns.
Create a calendar of messages
that you can use on Facebook
and in e-mails to promote
events like Mothers Day and
Christmas or other seasonal
offers.
Use the new Facebook Tabs as
a powerful tool to attract new
clients using newsletters,
sign-up forms, voucher down-
loads, and image galleries.
EXPERT SALONS
will have a busy and engaging
website and Facebook page with
lots of new content and great
marketing campaigns.
Changeable ads on your
website allow you to add
timely promotions (for spe-
cific upcoming holidays, for
example).
Develop blog stories that
are interesting and engaging
and bring them into your
website and Facebook page.
Using Facebook Tabs you can
run viral campaigns where
friends tell friends, and the
reach of your messages
grows exponentially.
PROFESSIONAL SALONS
will be updating their website
and Facebook almost daily,
sending e-mail campaigns, and
improving their search rankings
constantly.
Offer downloadable vouchers
and guides; these are great
tools to entice new clients
and can be embedded in your
website or Facebook Tabs.
Use Google advertising to
target keywords that are high-
value salon services and force
your way to the number-one
spot on Google.
Use Facebook ads as en-
gines to drive traffic to your
Facebook business page or
your salon website. They
are local, targeted, and cost-
effective.

A new pedicure system from The Nail Superstore could radically change what clients expect
from their salon experience. The Red Dragon Sauna Pedicure system combines a wooden
barrel with a steam generator to create a sauna that open pores, eliminates dead cells, and
softens skin. This earth-friendly alternative to a foot bath, made of handcrafted grade-A hem-
r, uses only one cup of water per service. It doesnt require pipes or plumbing, and the heat
from the steam eliminates the possibility of bacteria growth, according to the manufacturer.
By adding a few drops of essential oils to the steam outlet, techs can personalize this spa
experience for clients.
The pedicure system was designed with comfort and mobility in mind. The steam
barrel has a companion pedicure chair that sits at an ergonomically correct height for the
comfort of both the client and nail tech. The chair has a massager, plus it reclines so
clients can opt for eyebrow and facial services without leaving the chair. The
barrel is equipped with a removable lid, which allows clients to place
their feet inside easily, then the lid is returned to retain heat while
clients experience all the benets of the steam sauna. A
removable foot pedal doubles as a manual massager
to ease tired muscles. When the sauna is complete,
the barrel is rolled to the side
and replaced with the chairs
ottoman so techs can
complete the service.
The inspiration for
the Red Dragon Sauna
Pedicure came from

Since water baths lose
heat during the service,
clients may feel chilled during

service easy to skip in the cold
season. I wanted to create a
product that will attract clients all
year, says Huynh.

Forget hand-ling on the feet. Invented by a board-certied foot surgeon, the new Elimin-
er Callus Removal System is a safe and efortless power-driven ling system that quickly
smoothes out calluses. The Eliminer RotoFile system consists of the RotoFile base, which
ts most electric les, and the disposable RotoFile cap, which just twists on. No steriliza-
tion is required since the disposable cap is thrown away after use on each client.
The system also includes Prep Solution, which promotes light exfoliation and prepares
the area for the Eliminer procedure, and After Care Cream, a hydrating solution that pro-
motes rapid healing of treated areas. The After Care Cream can also be retailed to clients
to maintain smooth and healthy skin.
The company suggests adding $10-$15 dollars to your regular pedicure price since the
Eliminer gives better results than hand-ling and is more comfortable for your client.

Onycholysis
Onycholysis is a condition that causes
nails to separate from the nail bed. If
addressed quickly, this common nail
disorder poses no danger to clients.
What is it?
How do you get it?
How is it treated?
What can a tech do?
Onycholysis is a condition that causes nails to separate from the nail bed beginning at the distal
end of the nail (under the free edge). The nail itself will appear healthy, often maintaining its shape
and strength. Techs will be able to see the separation easily on natural nails and through light-
colored enhancement products. The section of the nail that is separated will appear white in color,
as there is air between the nail and the bed. When onycholysis is the result of a skin condition or
medication, clients will have additional symptoms beyond nail separation.
So many factors can contribute to nail separation that the exact cause of onycholysis can be difficult
to determine. The three most common causes are 1) the skin being exposed to an irritant; 2) some
type of trauma to the nail; 3) over-exposure to water. Some skin conditions, such as eczema or
psoriasis, can also cause onycholysis. Other times the condition is caused by medications, such
as oral contraceptives, radiation, and some prescription drugs. More serious health issues, such as
thyroid problems, may also cause nails to separate from the nail bed.
Secondary infections from onycholysis are not uncommon, so its important to catch and treat
onycholysis early. Of course, treatment depends on identifying the cause of the problem for that
particular sufferer. For example, treatment of hyperthyroidism will allow the nails to regrow normally
and nail infections can be treated with antimicrobials. Onycholysis related to psoriasis or eczema
may respond to a topical corticosteroid. In general, clients should clip the affected portion of the nail
and keep the nails short, keep the nail bed dry, avoid exposure to contact irritants, and wear gloves
for wet work. The portion of nail that has separated will not reattach to the nail bed, so you will have
to wait until the nail is fully regrown for the condition to be completely gone.
If the onycholysis is due to trauma or a skin irritant, trim the nail back, manicure the nail, and let the client
know an enhancement can be added as soon as the nail has grown out. If the onycholysis is caused from
a medical condition or prescription medication, clip the nail back, manicure the nail, and advise the client
to see her doctor. In either case, do not apply product over the area. Instruct clients to keep the area dry
between appointments. As clients see the nail grow, they can clip, file, or buff the nail at home.
Fungal infection of the nail, also known as onychomycosis, appears first an onycholysis.
Dermatologists estimate these fungal infections account for 50% of all nail disorders they treat.
Recent studies suggest that as much as 13% of the U.S. population has a fungal infection of one or
more nails. As the fungal infection advances, the separated nail appears yellow and opaque, then
appears crumbled and can brown.

Q
Q Q
What got you started as an inde-
pendent salon inspector?
Herzog Butler: In short, it was my
passion for the beauty industry.
When I moved to Los Angeles from
Germany in 2005 I was surprised at the
condition many beauty salons were in
and I observed how careless they were in
regard to salon hygiene. And there was
really no difference between hair salons,
nail salons, barbershops, or even spas.
When I would ask about their disin-
fection and sanitation procedures, the
licensees would look at me as if I was the
rst one ever to ask such a question.
That really shocked me. I owned my own
hair and nail business in Germany and I
actually worked behind the chair and
table. We would get
those questions all the
time and you had
better have an answer
ready and your salon
in great shape or clients
would just walk out
like I did. I came
to realize there were
big differences in the
way salons were run here.
How did your concerns trans-
late into opening your business?
Herzog Butler: I researched online
and tried to nd information about
rules and regulations and found out
about the efforts of the California Board
of Barbering and Cosmetology. I re-
searched more and saw that consumer
interest in the subject was huge!
Once I understood how the system
worked (or didnt work) I set out to nd
a way to help. Despite the nail industrys
reputation, I believe there are plenty of
salons that strive to be great and
constantly try to become better. In my
opinion, Salon Inspectors voluntary
control system can effectively help salon
owners and technicians create and
maintain a safe work environment that
protects the customer and licensee.
Whenever something is voluntary it
automatically attracts people who are
honestly interested in the subject. When
we perform our inspections, it is not
about nes. Its about identifying the
risks, providing education, and often
hands-on help xing the problem.
What are the most common
misperceptions people have about
the regulations?
Herzog Butler: Licensees and salon
owners often dont realize that nes in
California have been raised signicantly
and procedures have changed. Years
ago nes were much lower and salons
and licensees were given the opportu-
nity to correct violations before they
were ned. As Board inspections
happen so rarely, some salons havent
been checked by the Board in seven
years or more and are surprised when
they are inspected now.
Many professionals who have had

it her mission to educate salon

the sanitation rules and to instill
a sense of pride when it comes

outside help in the form of business-
related classes and consultants like us in
order to stay on top of things at all
times.
Any specic regulations that
trip people up?
Herzog Butler: In nail salons here
in California there is a signicant issue
about the disinfection of nail les (the
emery board type). Some licensees
believe that les labeled disinfectable
by the manufacturer are safe and they
cant be ned if they disinfect them prior
to each use. No matter what the le says,
the California Board does not permit
reusing of [porous] nail les. There are
some metal les that can be reused after
proper disinfection, but never be misled
by the labeling!
What sorts of new routines
do you recommend your clients
implement?
Herzog Butler: Recommendations
for protocols and routines are different
in each salon. However, some of the
changes Salon Inspector recommends
are similar everywhere:
> Having each work station set up with
exactly the same set of products, mate-
rials, and tools leads to easier control of
salon protocol compliance, meaning
self-inspections become much easier.
> We recommend creating manuals for
each service offered at the salon. This is
denitely a great way to monitor compli-
ance during the service. Mistakes are
easier to avoid and the service will be
consistently the same experience no
matter who treats the client. Compli-
ance is easy if there is a clear plan the
staff can follow.
> Setting up a designated area for the
disinfection of tools and implements
allows for a more practical approach. It is
also helpful to designate one person to
handle disinfection at the end of the day
or twice a day. Some of our clients rotate
with a cleaning schedule, so that every-
body at the salon does something for the
salon as a whole each day. This encour-
ages teamwork and is more time efcient
as well. For the owner this is an easy
method to hold staff members account-
able for their designated tasks.
their licenses for a long time believe that

secret ingredient
acrylic liquid
As techs, we often refer to the liquid we use to craft nails as mono-
mer. We know its a generic term, but its useful for communication
and easier to say than ethyl methacrylate. Monomer is a Greek
term that means one part or one unit. (Mono means one; mer
means unit.) But beyond monomer, what is the liquid that we use
day in and day out? Weve listed the ingredients necessary in every
formula, regardless of manufacturer.

OPTIONAL INGREDIENTS:
Along with the essential ingredients listed above, some manufacturers
add these optional ingredients:
Flow modifiers: EMA already has natural properties that make it spread smoothly, but flow
modifiers are added to customize a products workability. They help to create an easy, smooth spread.
Wetting agents: These are added to help the product spread smoothly over the surface and to improve adhesion
to solid surfaces, such as the nail plate or the acrylic that remains on the nail between services. Think of how water
forms into droplets on the hood of a car immediately following a car waxing, says Schoon. As time passes, the wax wears
away and water runs smoothly over the hood without beading up. In the case of acrylic nails, wetting agents help the product
flow smoothly over the surface of the nail plate and down into the nooks and crannies. This is also why its so important to prep
the nail correctly and remove oils, says Schoon. Any oil on the nail will prevent the wetting agents from working correctly and can
block proper adhesion.
Dyes: Some manufactures add dyes to the liquid to achieve a desired effect. For example, blue acts as an optical brightener, which
makes colors appear more vibrant. Think of the little blue dots you can see in some laundry powders, says Schoon. Those brighten the
colors in clothes. In a similar way, blue dyes make whites appear whiter and colors appear brighter.
JULY 2011 | NAILS MAGAZINE | 107
ACRYLIC LIQUID consists of these major types of ingredients:
Monomer: Many different chemicals are classified as monomers.
Manufacturers need to choose one that is in liquid form, says in-
dustry chemist Doug Schoon. This monomer is going to be the work-
horse and do the bulk of the heavy lifting in the work of creating nails. The most
common choice for monomers for traditional acrylic nails is ethyl methacrylate
(EMA). EMA has adhesion properties to hold everything together, it resists crack-
ing, and it spreads smoothly. Manufacturers choose a different monomer for
low-odor formulas.
Inhibitor: To the monomer (EMA), manufacturers need to add a product that pre-
vents premature polymerization (thats when molecules prematurely link together
into chains of molecules). If the molecules link too early, the monomer will harden
in the bottle. Typically, manufacturers choose hydroquinone (HQ), hydroquinone
monomethyl ether (MEHQ), or butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) as inhibitors.
Catalyst: The catalyst speeds up the chemical reaction and allows the prod-
uct to set up within minutes instead of hours. The reaction happens when
the liquid comes into contact with benzoyl peroxide, which is the activator
or initiator in the powder. Its the catalyst that determines the set up time
of the acrylic. Manufacturers can speed up or reduce the setup time by the amount of
catalyst they add to their formula. However, they need to be careful; too much catalyst
can discolor the acrylic and make the end product weaker.
Crosslinkers: Crosslinkers are added to a formula to link the strands of mole-
cules together in a 3-D type web. Think of crosslinkers as rungs on a ladder, says
Schoon. They bridge, strengthen, and connect molecular chains.
UV Absorbers: Like the name suggests, UV absorbers interact with UV light. They are
added to prevent the nails from yellowing. They absorb the UV light and con-
vert it to harmless blue light. With excessive amounts of a UV absorber, the
nails could appear as if they have a blue glow.

It is estimated that during the

omilynn Rando, co-owner of New Beginnings
Salon in Owego, N.Y., knows the nail industry.
With over 25 years experience, she has held
the role of nail tech, educator, salon owner, and event
organizer. Trained under Maureen Volpe, Rando was
instructed not only in bookkeeping and proper
application, but also about the many advantages
available to her as a nail tech. Doing nails offers two
opportunities, taught Volpe, a way to invest in the
lives of people and the ability to be independent.
Rando says through the nail industry she grew from
a oundering teenager into a successful business
woman. Im so grateful, and I try to inspire all new
techs I train, says Rando. I want them to know the
nail industry offers them the opportunity to be self-
sufcient. Thats empowering.
Rando rst heard of the modern-day slave trade
when she watched the movie Human Trafcking on
Lifetime. That movie, along with other documentaries
and interviews on the topic, angered and haunted her.
How can this be happening in the 21st century? she
thought.
Rando laughed the rst time she was described as a
nail tech abolitionist, but then slowly nodded her
head to conrm the title. Its true, she says. Human
trafcking is happening in nail salons, and I want to
raise awareness among techs and clients so we can
clean up the industry.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING
Kevin Bales, president of Free the Slaves, a not-for-
prot organization based in Washington D.C., gives
an understandable denition of human trafcking.
Its the movement of individuals through deception
or threats for the purposes of exploitation.
People can be exploited in one of two ways: for labor
or for sex. Its a global problem not limited by borders,
and though illegal, its so rampant it appears unaf-
fected by limitations of law. Bales estimates 27 million
people are living in slavery worldwide.
The problem isnt conned to far-off countries
across the ocean. Its a booming business right here in
the United States. In 2006, the FBI estimated up to
18,000 people are trafcked into the United States
every year. According to Polaris Project, one of the
leading anti-trafcking organization in the U.S., these
people end up being exploited for labor in agriculture,
domestic work, restaurants, strip clubs, and any other
industry that lacks sufcient oversight. If its not for
labor, individuals are exploited for sex. Polaris Project
reports three main sex trafcking networks in the
United States: domestic, Latino, and Asian.
All trafckers sustain themselves by using force,
threats, or other means to control their victims. In the
case of labor slaves, victims may be beaten or threat-
ened with bodily harm, deportation, or possibly harm
to their family. They are given no freedom, often live
and work at the same location, and have little-to-no
access to money.
With sex slaves, control is gained by terrorizing and
dehumanizing the individual; the common result is a
na0711trafficking.indd 117 5/24/11 12:22:40 PM
118 | NAILS MAGAZINE | JULY 2011
One reason human traf cking can go undetected is because
victims often dont speak English. Polaris Project lists other
common red ags that raise suspicion:
> Is not free to leave or come and go as he/she wishes
> Is unpaid, paid very little, or paid only through tips
> Works excessively long and/or unusual hours
> Is not allowed breaks or sufers under unusual restrictions
at work
> High security measures exist in the work and/or living loca-
tions (e.g. opaque windows, boarded up windows, bars on win-
dows, barbed wire, security cameras, etc.)
> Is fearful, anxious, depressed, submissive, tense, or nervous/
paranoid
> Exhibits unusually fearful or anxious behavior after bringing up
law enforcement
> Avoids eye contact
If you suspect a person is a victim of human traf cking, call the
Polaris Project Hotline at (888) 373-7888.
WARNING SIGNS
fearful, crushed spirit. While all three trafcking
networks use Internet sites such as Craigslist and
Backpage to sell victims, there does seem to be
distinction as to where they operate in the real world.
Domestic trafcking appears at places such as truck
stops, street corners, brothels, and strip clubs. The
Department of Justice estimates the average age for a
girl to be trafcked into the commercial sex industry
here in the U.S. is just 12 to 14 years old. A common
scenario is for an older man to pose as a boyfriend,
win her trust, and then become her pimp. Often the
girl still views the man as her boyfriend. The Latino
networks commonly use residential brothels,
delivery services, and cantinas as legal cover for
illegal activity. Asian networks hide behind escort
services, karaoke bars, and Asian massage parlors
(AMPs), according to Polaris Project.
CONNECTING THE DOTS
Something perked Randos interest. Human traf-
cking hides behind AMPs? Its so prevalent in the
beauty industry it warrants an acronym? Hmm. She
went to the computer and Googled human trafcking
nail salons. With that search, Rando learned the nail
industry is being used not as a way to empower
women, but as a way to exploit them. She read through
some stories:
Amanda Kloer, editor at change.org, reports on
women who were lured to America with promises of
a job in a Long Island nail salon. The nail salon
turned out to be a massage parlor where women were
forced into prostitution. The salon owner, who was
charged with human trafcking, used Craigslist to
advertise services. Kloer references a similar story,
also out of New York, where owners of Babi Nail
Salon were accused of withholding pay and physically
abusing workers.
Phillip Martin, senior investigative reporter for
NPR in Boston (WGBH), reports of human trafcking
in Massachusetts. In Springeld, police raided a nail
salon suspected to be a front for prostitution. In
Boston, police investigated another salon, also for
suspicions of human trafcking. Martin quotes Norma
Ramos, executive director of the New York-based
Coalition Against Trafcking in Women, With nail
salons ... you can have those women being labor
trafcked to work in those salons during the day, and
then pulled into sex trafcking at night.
In York, Pa., Jim McClure of York Blog reports on
three people charged with conspiracy to commit
forced labor trafcking by forcing two women to work
in an area nail salon under the threat of being turned
over to immigration. All three pleaded guilty and have
been sentenced with nes, probation, or jail time.
Alan Johnson, of the Columbus Dispatch, reports,
a multi-million dollar human trafcking scheme was
operating out of nail salons in Ohio. His report
explained that 16 licensees lived at the same address
in one case. Workers there were little more than
indentured servants.
There were more reports from New York, Massachu-
setts, Pennsylvania, Ohio ... Rando had seen enough.
AN ACTIVIST IS BORN
Im furious that this is happening in the nail
industry, says Rando. It makes me so mad to think
women are lied to, deceived, brought into the country,
and then enslaved. Can you imagine what the woman
is thinking? Does she wonder if the clients know, if
this is just the way things are in America? Along with
her frustration over the nail industry being exploited,
Randos concern is for the trapped individual. I
believe God cares for each of the individuals who are
being abused, she says. Its important to me that
they not only get their life back, but that they know

they have value.
Though unsure of what to do or how to help, Rando
decided to do something. She started with what she
knew: educating techs. It was January 2011, and she
had a regional networking event scheduled for March.
That gave her two months to come up with a way to
communicate what she had learned.
Rando enlisted the help of her staff and other nail
techs in her circle of contacts. Together, they created
a yer to hand out at her networking event and a
website that was elementary but sufcient so techs
had somewhere to go to continue learning once the
networking event was over.
It was a rst step, and
one that is shaping Randos
vision into an implement-
able plan to raise aware-
ness and help people. She
is talking with the A21
Campaign, Polaris Project, Not For Sale, and other
anti-trafcking organizations in an effort to coordi-
nate an awareness and fundraising event for January
2012. January is human trafcking month, and
Rando hopes by then nail techs will have become
more aware of the problem and be ready to work
together to abolish slavery in salons.
The issue is a delicate one. It will take many nail
tech-abolitionists to liberate the women being
exploited, and it wont come without vigilance and
commitment. Consider a few roadblocks. First its
difcult to identify victims. Though in plain sight, they
are often overlooked. Its in the open, people reason, it
must be legal. This is a myth that keeps women
enslaved in broad daylight while clients get their
nails done! Rando wants nail techs and clients to
recognize several common red ags that suggest a
worker is enslaved. I believe once people learn about
the problem, we will get involved. Just like in the
movement to go green, it takes education to bring
about change, she says.
A second roadblock is that many victims wont self-
identify. According to Polaris Project, Victims of
human trafcking often do not seek help immediately,
due to lack of trust, self-blame, or being directly
trained by trafckers to distrust authorities.
A third roadblock is the frustratingly inadequate
oversight from local and state governments. No nail
tech relishes the idea of her day being interrupted by a
clipboard-carrying state worker poking around in the
salon. However, one reason human trafcking can
ourish in the nail industry is because business
licenses are easy to obtain, and once the salon is open,
its unlikely an inspector will visit the premises regu-
larly. I see a state inspector about every six years,
says Rando. Its time government ofcials start
getting serious about the laws of slavery and bear

down on this corruption.
A fourth roadblock exists apart from the trafckers
and the victims. Its an internal roadblock, and one
Rando says must be addressed if we are to make
progress. Its been described as a tension between
Asian vs. Caucasian salons, or traditional vs.
discount salons, or even standard and
non-standard salons. Theres a split in the nail
industry, and while signs point to improvement,
theres still a long way to go. Techs on both sides can
agree on the basics: unlicensed, unsafe, unsanitary
salons should not exist regardless of the race and
country of origin of the owner or nail tech. Further,
both sides have strengths and weaknesses; we can
learn from each other whether its in regard to
efciency and speed or comfort and customer service.
Weve got a real problem, says Rando. Trafckers
are exploiting our industry to force women into
modern-day slavery. Lets work together to be their
voice and their advocates.
This doesnt mean we turn a blind eye to violations
in the nail industry. Just the opposite. It means
learning to look for warning signs and being willing to
get involved and report what we see. One of the
greatest weapons in the ght against trafcking is
inquisitive neighbors, says Elizabeth Keyes, attorney
for Casa of Maryland, an immigrant-right organiza-
tion. We dont like to be nosy, but the person is hoping
against hope that someone asks so they can get help.
Ultimately, Rando hopes to develop a way for techs
to help restore the lives of the women rescued out of
the slave trade. I dream of the day when we can come
alongside these women, restore their dignity, and help
rebuild their lives by offering to train them so they
have the skills to be independent, says Rando. I
think it would be sweet justice to see women vindicated
by succeeding in an industry that trafckers used to
exploit them.

The new BioDefense Nailnity gel is a
hybrid of two recognized Epsilon gels:
BioDefense natural nail gel and Nailnity
nail extension cover gel. This new formula
shields the natural nail and forties it, giving
it the look of a healthy, strong natural nail. A
BioDefense manicure is a good alternative
to extensions for natural nail clients. Thanks
to its bio-friendly formula, a manicure with
this gel is dif cult to distinguish from the
look and feel of a natural manicure.

Cindy Walston, nail tech
In her other life: decorator
Whenever people would come to my house, theyd tell me, You should be
a decorator, says Cindy Walston, a 25-year nail industry veteran. Now
based in Portland, Ore., she lived in Rio Vista, Calif., at the time. I had a
large vintage home built in the early 1900s. It was what I was most proud of and that was what
propelled me to become a decorator.
Walston landed an opportunity to work with a local design company as a freelance decorator.
I worked on many homes, even businesses! she says. She became certied in the eld, but says
you really just have to have an eye for it. Scale and balance should come naturally to you.
Eventually she and a friend opened a country antique store that also housed her decorating
ofce. At this wild time, I managed to work long hours at the salon, cramming all my clients
within a three-day work week, she recalls. The rest of the week I was at the store, consulting
on homes, or doing store displays after hours. That was until her husband dropped a
bombshell. They had to move for his new job.
So here I am now in Portland. I bought a house and you guessed it Im decorating!
Walston is also in the process of opening a home-based salon. I love French country decor.
My home is very colorful, but my salon will showcase French whites, distressed glamour,
and vintage furniture. I have never been a fan of the traditional nail table, so I will have a
vintage French console table with curved legs. Once again Im bringing my two loves together
decorating and nails.
Interior decorating is a lot like doing nails. You create, you have your own style and
technique, and theres a before and after. Your interior space can give you condence and
make you feel good about yourself just like beautiful nails!
