MECHATRONICS IN PUBLIC UTILITIES
PUBLIC UTILITY
 UTILITY – is a function that maps a state onto a real number, which describes the associated degree of happiness or simply the “quality of being useful”  essential public service  a government-regulated set of services provided by organizations consumed by the public: electricity, natural gas, water, transportation, and sewage. Telephony may occasionally be included within the definition

WATER
 Automation and remote control of services of: • • • • distribution and pumping, sewage raising, purification (civil and industrial) and potable water purification.

 leak location system in water distribution networks.  Remote reading of meters.

GAS
 Automation and remote control of final reduction groups and primary stations.  Remote reading of cathodic protection.  Remote reading of meters.

ENERGY
 Automation and remote control of plants: • • • of co-generation, of remote heating, solar energy,

public lighting.

ENVIRONMENT
 Environment monitoring  Layer levels

REQUIREMENTS of a PUBLIC UTILITY
 System monitoring  Efficiency  Quality  Certification for the services provided

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
 Reliability of service  Efficiency  Safety  Environmental

Modern management of network services requires the latest technologies in the field of:
• • • • Electronics Information technology Measurement tools Remote control tools

Automation and monitoring system is directly linked to how reliable the tools are.

 Centralized engineering station  Centralized alarms management  Historic Trends  Redundancy management

 Web client function  System software

HUMAN-MACHINE-INTERFACE (HMI)
 The human-machine-interface is the point of exchange for power system information and control.  HMIs must be designed to provide operators with timely, ordered, and actionable information to promote the safe and reliable operation of critical power assets.

REMOTE CONTROL TECHNOLOGY
 fundamental to favor solutions that could adapt features and performance in order to develop the requested functions and equipment to be integrated.

ENERGY SAVING for Pumps and Fans
 Energy savings is one of the main strategies to work on in order to satisfy these agreements: public utilities have also become involved in this.  One of the most common areas deals with the control and activation of fans and pumps.  The energy-saving function automatically sets the output voltage for the engine based on all minimum instant load conditions – with equivalent performance – the power absorbed by the engine.

Power Line Communication (PLC) Technologies
 PLC is such an emerging technology that uses “no new wires” and provides for internetworking services using the electrical wiring already deployed extensively throughout the world.
