With the early groundwork carried out in Pakistan and India during the early 1960’s while with the University of Southern California and the Ford Foundation, the concept for an entirely new discipline solidified in the early 1970’s when, as a Professor at the University of Hawaii, Dr. James R. Omps (circled above) was asked to present a seminar to a group of top business and government leaders in Taiwan at the time. The inaugural session was opened by the then Minister of Economic Development, The Honorable Sun Yat-Sen. It is interesting to note that the Minister went on, a few years later, to become Premier of Taiwan.

The challenge that Dr. Omps faced was this – how does a professor from the college of business present anything worth while to business people who are at the very top of their respective fields? The answer came when he realized that he would have to craft his program around a concept that he had been working with for some years – that of entrerenology.

At the time, Taiwan was seeking a way to compete effectively in the global market that was rapidly emerging in Southeast Asia during that time. So successful was the initial seminar that the Government of Taiwan requested additional seminars over the next few months. Did these seminars have any measurable effect? If you have ever charted the growth and influence of Taiwan’s economy, you will note that it expanded dramatically through the 1970’s, becoming an effective competitor along with Japan as they moved forward into the 1980’s.

Following the success of the Taiwan seminars, the International University of Entreprenology - initially incorporated as the International Institution of Entreprenology - was established in the State of Hawaii on July 31, 1972. A 501(c)(3) public non-profit foundation, the IUE was, for its founders, Dr. James R. Omps, William Long and the first Vice President, future United States Senator Orrin G. Hatch, the first step in the realization of a vision – a vision to create a unique institution dedicated to the research, development and presentation of programs specifically to meet the education and training needs of the men and women who create jobs – the entrepreneurs, entreprenologists, and VisionEngineers © of the world more commonly known simply as employers.

The World Is Our Campus

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

For more than 30 years, the IUE has dedicated its resources to the development of unique, appropriate and applicable programs using a common sense approach to teaching and learning. More than that, the programs approach education from the perspective of the employer. With virtually all other institutions of higher learning focusing on educating and training employees, there can be no doubt that there is a need for what we do.

During my lifetime I have been actively involved in literally every aspect of business. I have first-hand experience in business operations and I have first-hand experience in the teaching of the theory of business. It is this unique perspective that is the common thread binding all of our programs together.

Knowledge without experience can be confusing and often leads some to doubt themselves. They limit themselves to what is “known” often lacking the courage to ask themselves – “what if?” From my own experience as a tenured professor – now retired - I can tell you that traditional schools, colleges and universities are bound by knowledge – by what is known. The reason is simple: in order to implement a course, the information (knowledge) must be static – it cannot change for a minimum of at least two and, more often than not, three or more years. As you know, the only constant in the real world is change. Change will occur before you know it and I can tell you that change will occur – nine times out of ten – before you are prepared for it.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER For more than 30 years, the IUE has dedicated its resources
A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER For more than 30 years, the IUE has dedicated its resources

The IUE was created to embrace change, not to avoid it. This single factor alone makes the institution unique. We are constantly updating our programs to reflect the changes that impact the courses we offer. Education is only useful if it applies to real-life situations – if it can be applied real-time.

The IUE was founded on the premise that there are always creative, innovative and occasionally better alternatives to achieving certain outcomes, even when it relates to education and training. Acknowledging this challenge, one of the early objectives we set for ourselves was to develop and implement a more effective teaching/learning methodology. What we came up with was a methodology with the potential to create, develop and articulate new knowledge. What a departure from the standard rote method clearly preferred and utilized by so many schools, colleges and universities – a method that must, by virtue of the very parameters it sets, lock students and participants into a there can only be one correct answer situation.

For more than a quarter of a century the methodology we utilize has been and remains the optimum amalgam of lecture, hands-on workshops, and topical forum discussions. We regularly assess learning retention by administering reality based quizzes and examinations. The teaching/learning experience was developed to capitalize on the education and training needs of the adult learner – the man and/or woman actively involved in a career as opposed to the younger person fresh out of secondary school still wondering what he or she might one day become.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT 1. 2.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
1.
2.

During the years that followed the creation of the IUE, we have placed an emphasis on two things:

Providing the most appropriate needs-based programs possible, and

Keeping programs relevant by insuring they address current issues in a real-world, real- time format.

Ten or five or even three years ago, it might not have been as important, perhaps, to keep pace with socio- economic change as it is today. The fact is, however, that the need to do so is critical and there are not nearly enough institutions of higher learning that seem to recognize this fact.

The IUE has, from its inception more than 30 years ago, focused on trying to minimize the disruption that is a natural result of the rapidly evolving global economy. Every new year has brought with it the challenge of keeping training and education courses relevant and applicable. Far too many schools, colleges, universities and institutions of higher learning find it increasingly difficult to keep pace with change. This is largely the result of the traditions and conventions to which they owe both their loyalty and longevity. Their mandate has been, from the very beginning, to education and graduate well trained and well educated employees – men and women to fill the job spaces created by the employers. This is something they do very well.

We find ourselves today on the other side of the same coin. Our focus and our programs, for more than a quarter of a century, has been on providing courses needed by the employers – the men and women who create the job spaces needed to provide a job space for traditional college graduates. It is a hand-in-glove relationship and one that is needed to ensure successful adaptation to the relentless nature of change and development.

What sets the IUE apart from so many of the institutions of higher learning that dot the landscape – in addition to our employer focused mission – is the fact that we neither need nor do we choose to have the large sprawling campus so common to our traditional education system. Our programs can be offered and presented in facilities

“Universities won’t survive. The future is outside the traditional campus … outside the traditional classroom.”

convenient to our students. The IUE has not opted for the bricks and mortar and ivy covered walls approach to education. To put it in a phrase we use proudly and often – The World Is Our Campus and by this we mean the real

world … not the hypothetical world that so many of our institutions of higher learning function in.

The Programs The IUE offers a complete range of programs from undergraduate up through post graduate.
The Programs
The IUE offers a complete range of programs from undergraduate up through post
graduate. The institution also offers a complete range of programs leading to professional
certification. Our degree and certification programs offer the program participant an option -
they can invest their time and resources in programs with a more traditional look and feel or
they can opt for programs offering a
“Imagination is more important
than knowledge. Knowledge is
limited. Imagination encircles the
world.”
different path to achieving essentially
the same outcomes.
IUE degree programs, although
shorter and less of an expense than
similar programs offered through more
traditional institutions of higher learning,
require nonetheless that the student be prepared to invest both time and money once a
program has been selected. Professional Certification programs, on the other hand, are
substantially shorter in length and less of a drain on available resources both financially and
with regard to time. The student chooses the program that he or she considers the best fit –
the program in which he or she would feel most comfortable.
As mentioned, the Professional Certification programs are relatively short-term,
learning intensive courses focusing on the education and training needs of those actively
involved in commerce in one way or
another. These programs will be detailed
herein but let us begin to tell you that they
include Certified VisionEngineer © ,
Certified Entreprenologist, Certified Small
and Medium Business Administrator, and
Certified MicroEnterprise
Owner/Manager.
The Programs The IUE offers a complete range of programs from undergraduate up through post graduate.

You may ask why the IUE tends to promote graduate and post graduate programs more aggressively than we do our undergraduate programs. Quite simply, our research has shown that the clear majority of successful employers – those entrepreneurs and entreprenologists that create and/or manage new, mature and growing enterprises – already possess a functional understanding of operational skills and knowledge normally associated with an undergraduate degree in business, and have been applying them for some time. The primary difference between a traditional undergraduate degree in business and that offered by the IUE, however, is the early focus on the more creative and innovative aspects of such business program staples as accounting, finance and marketing. We have even developed programs that are so basic that they could easily be implemented in elementary and secondary school programs to offer an early start to those whose interest might be sparked in this discipline.

Professional Certification

More than half a century ago, Dr. James R. Omps, entrepreneur, entreprenologist, VisionEngineer © , founder and Chairman of the Board of the IUE, recognized that there was a need to acknowledge the contributions of the men and women who established or directed companies that provided job spaces. He knew that economic growth only occurs when new job spaces are created.

Whether you call them entrepreneurs, entreprenologists or intrepreneurs, these jobs creation specialists are people who put everything at risk up to and often including their self- esteem. They are professionals in every sense of the word and have been denied professional standing – denied a designation that tells the world “I am a professional.”

Those who successfully complete their selected program of study will have the opportunity to take the examination for professional certification and will - much like Certified Public Accountants in the United States and Chartered Accountants in the accounting profession - earn the right to be known as professionals in their particular area of expertise … business.

Certification Programs - The Economic Hero © Series

On the following pages, we will detail the programs that are available to those wishing to earn professional certification in business, entrepreneurship, entreprenology and VisionEngineering © . It is worth noting that these programs are the result of more than half a century of research in the area of commerce, enterprise development, appropriate growth and management.

Over the years we have been asked numerous times exactly what, if anything, separates the IUE and its programs from those offered by every traditional business school, college and university in the world. There is a distinction and it is really quite simple.

Every conventional school, college and university that has a business program – and the vast majority of them do - even those proclaiming to have the definitive entrepreneurship program, focus on educating middle managers for large corporations. That is the focus of the curricula, of the selected text materials and that is the direction taken by the school itself. We find absolutely no fault with that because there is always going to be a need for such programs. Why? Because there is always going to be a need for employees – and that is what these programs are designed to turn out into society – employees.

In the very early 1970’s, Dr. Omps recognized this fact and, as he had done previously, again looked beyond tradition and convention in an effort to create appropriate education and training programs to meet the unique needs of the men and women responsible for economic growth and well being – the employer. So what then is the biggest difference between the IUE’s programs and those offered by virtually every other business school in the world? It is the difference between educating and training employees or, as with the IUE, meeting the educational and training needs of the employer. If we can educate and train people to think as employers as opposed to thinking as employees – and we can – then there will be job spaces for the employees that the overwhelming number of conventional schools are turning out year after year.

The only way to assure that appropriate and sustainable economic growth will take place is to focus on educating and training greater numbers of people with the ability to think and act as an employer. Whether they choose to create new businesses, revitalize and strengthen mature businesses, rejuvenate failing industries or choose a career in the public sector is immaterial. They will have the skills and abilities to effectively successfully face

the challenges prompted by change – and as we know all too well, change is the only constant we can count on.

Why Professional Certification

Professional certification is rapidly emerging as the most important kind of credential one can earn in the new millennium. That being said, there are those within every business community who, above all else, have proven themselves to be professionals whether we are talking about attorneys, medical doctors, certified or chartered accountants, computer specialists of all kind. The only thing still missing to date is the certification of those men and women who are truly business professionals. In addition, there has been no organization to specifically develop and administer a standard against which professional business people would be certified - a standard to authenticate their credentials.

That gap was filled with the establishment of the World Association of Visioneers and Entreprenologists (WAVE) in 1991. This membership association houses the Commission on Higher Education – a commission to accredit courses, programs and institutions focusing on entrepreneurship, entreprenology and VisionEngineering © - and the Professional Certification Board. It is this Board that has created and set the standards for professional certification and it is this same Board that awards the professional credentials if and as a designation is earned.

Graduate and Post Graduate Programs The Language of Business series was developed to allow business professionals,
Graduate and Post Graduate Programs
The Language of Business series was developed to allow business professionals,
regardless of their chosen career path, the opportunity to earn a Master of Business
Administration (MBA) in Entreprenology – the discipline of change and growth
management. Successful completion of this program says that the candidate has displayed a
practical understanding of the Principles of Entreprenology and how the entrepreneurial and
entreprenological approach to enterprise operations impacts the enterprise. The
overwhelming majority of colleges, universities and schools of business focus on teaching
students the fundamentals of business from the perspective of the employee. The typical
MBA program makes the broad assumption that the average MBA student has little or no
business experience or training. This is why the coursework for the first 9 to 12 months of an
MBA program is, in virtually all cases, introductory in nature. That also explains why it
generally takes two-plus years to satisfactorily complete the program. When successfully
completed, the average graduate is prepared to be an employee at a middle management level
in a large corporation.
IUE programs prepare graduates for a different future. Rather than educating and
training future employees, IUE programs focus on educating and training future employers.
While there is certainly a need for quality employees, there is an equal or greater need for in
increasing number of quality employers. Without job spaces to absorb the MBA graduates
being turned out by every other school, college and university around the globe, there would
be no need for the traditional or standard business curriculum.
The IUE’s highly unique programs were designed to meet the needs of the new global
economy by educating and certifying those men and women with the knowledge and
experience necessary to understand and function effectively in the rapidly changing
landscape that is the global commerce environment. Today the need for men and women
with the ability to think and act in an entreprenological manner – to think and act like
employers rather than employees - has become absolute.
The Language of Business series was designed with the specific goal of putting a
graduate degree and/or professional certification within the reach of working professionals.
The best way to educate growing numbers of quality decision makers is to make the pursuit
of quality education less problematic. The IUE has created a series of programs that not only
make it possible for the busy executive, middle manager, business owner/operator or
professional to earn that degree or to achieve certification – it does so without compromising
the high quality results that today’s rapidly changing and constantly shifting economic
environment mandates.

The average DBA program requires and

investment of anywhere from 18 to 24 months of the candidate’s time, not to mention the financial resources that must also be invested. That is why the IUE has developed alternative programs.

The DBA program for the experienced business professional can be completed in as little as 12 to 18 months. It looks like this:

TRACK I – Doctoral program allowing the participant to complete the course requirement in 18 months.

TRACK

II

– Doctoral program

allowing the participant to complete the course requirements in 12 months.

TRACK III – Doctoral program allowing the participant to complete the course requirements in approximately 6 months.

If you possess a steep learning curve and

enjoy challenges, you might truly enjoy the 6

month programs. A brief overview of the short- term program is shown to the right. Remember, the requirements, with regard to subject matter, course requirements, etc., is exactly the same. The only difference is the amount of time allotted to each of the programs. So where other institutions insist that you schedule your life around their program, we let you schedule your education around your life.

The program offers the participant the

opportunity to increase and enhance his or her

current business skills and also provides an opportunity to learn a few things that are now offered in any other program today – an

introduction to the Language of Business, The Principles of Entreprenology, and the Fourth Level of Management – just a few of things that makes our program completely unique.

The required thesis will be a study of the

candidate’s own business – a process that will

allow him or her to do a complete analysis of the organization from top to bottom. You will be called upon to take a closer look at your business than you may have done in some time. The process will be a learning experience and the result will be a tool that you can use to fine tune the organization. The thesis will also become a

teaching and learning tool for the IUE in future offerings.

Combined Programs

While degree and professional certification are most often offered separately, it is possible to take a degree program simultaneously with a certification program. This is now available for the first time anywhere in the world.

Why can we offer such a program? Because certain professional certification programs focus on essentially the same elements covered in a certain degree program. The primary difference is:

The degree program requires the submission of a research project and a complete Career Achievement Profile (CAP).

The certification program requires the candidate to take and pass the Reality Based Examination (RBE) for that specific professional designation.

Combined Programs While degree and professional certification are most often offered separately, it is possible to

The RBE

is an open-book, research

examination allowing the examinee access to all materials and resources provided and/or created during the course of the program. A word of caution here: do not think that an REB is a sure thing. In the past, more than one person has failed to achieve a passing grade. The successful completion of the exam is based upon the candidate’s ability to read the question and then find the appropriate answer – and to do so within the allotted time.

Should the candidate, for whatever reason, fail to achieve a passing score, he or she will be allowed to apply to sit for the next regularly scheduled examination. As with similar certification programs, this process may be repeated as often as necessary. Our experience shows, however, that an examinee has never had to sit for the exam more than twice.

faculty, and learning forums are dynamic.
Why, you might ask? It is because the real
world is dynamic. The first thing graduates of
any conventional education program learn, once
they get out into the real world, is that the only
thing they can count on is inevitabile is change.

A Few Worlds About Faculty

At the IUE our programs are conducted, facilitated and coordinated almost exclusively by adjunct faculty. Why? Over the years we have learned that adjunct faculty – men and women still active in their career field and/or organization – are able to bring the real world into the learning environment – something that the average career academic cannot do with any regularity or proficiency. The tenured full-time faculty found in virtually every traditionally oriented school, college and university around the world have, more often than not, gone directly from high school into college where they have earned their undergraduate, graduate and post graduate degree after which they have moved seamlessly into teaching without the benefit of any practical experience whatsoever.

In addition, where conventional education programs are static, our programs, faculty, and learning forums are dynamic.

IUE classes are interactive and anecdotal with an appropriate amount of lecture rather than purely lecture oriented with limited discussion – the teaching/learning standard preferred by traditional institutions of higher learning. For that reason, our teaching/learning outcomes are, current, practical and more easily implemented.

In addition, where conventional education programs are static, our programs, faculty, and learning forums are dynamic.
