D in English and American Literature was elected the U.S Senate from California as a Republican. He was the first to introduce the English Language Amendment. Hayakawa was concerned about the growing problem of the language barrier. Being an immigrant himself of Japanese decent, he was the founder of U.S ENGLISH. U.S ENGLISH is a group dedicated to the unifying of English as the Language of the United States. Hayakawas support of a common language, he said Bilingualism for the individual is fine, but not for a country. He served as honorary Chairman of U.S ENGLISH until his death. Although his many efforts in passing English as an official language while his service as a U.S Senate the bill was never passed. Many others of U.S ENGLISH still have hope of pass a bill. These states such as Washington, Texas, Arizona, etc have put forth in English being their official language. The reason is mainly for government purposes. While the debate of an Official language of the U.S, it grew rapidly because of the debates in Arizona and the states law about illegal immigration. Not only in Arizona but in general there are illegal immigrants in other communities who are not able to speak English. Since 30 states have already adopted Official English laws as of 2010, there are questions that arise from this. Questions about Adopting English as the U.S official language want to be answered. Would it aid immigrants in the assimilation process and make it more likely for them to succeed in life? There can be a big conflict when people talk and miscommunication can be a big problem.
