The Pastors Message

by Pastor Santos Yao

GIVE CAREFUL THOUGHT TO YOUR WAYS (PART 2) HAGGAI 1:12 - 2:9
The first prophecy of the Lord through the prophet Haggai was given on August 29, 520 BC. When the people heard God's voice through the prophet Haggai, they responded positively to God's message. Two verbs in 1:12 summarizes their proper response: they "obeyed"... they "feared the Lord". Consequently, the Lord gave them His encouragement in a very brief message that very same day: "I Am with you". His Spirit was moving the leaders and the people to action. They began laying the foundation for the new temple 23 days after (vv. 13-15). On October 17, 49 days after the 1st prophecy, the 2nd prophecy came through the prophet Haggai. The message was intended for the same audience. It essentially consists of 3 rhetorical questions (2:1-5): 1. Who among you have seen the Temple in its former glory? 2. How does it look to you now? 3. Does it not seem to you like nothing? These 3 questions brought out the sentiment of discouragement among the older folks in the audience. Yes, they have obeyed. But when they compared the best they can do, with what was previously constructed by King Solomon, they saw the great disparity. The former temple was inlaid with gold, silver and precious stones... much bigger, more majestic, more magnificent. The present temple, on the other hand, lacks these grandeur and the luster... it is much more inferior if compared. Hence, they are quickly overwhelmed by discouragement. God's message to these discouraged ones is brief and to the point: "Be strong"... "My Spirit remains among you"... "Stop being afraid". In verses 6-9, He promised another "shaking" where "all nations will come" and he "will fill this house with glory". He also promised His provision, that "the glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house" as He will grant "shalom" (peace) to this place. In the midst of inadequacy and helplessness, God encouraged His people to do their best... give their total obedience... submit to His leading. What He is after is not the superficial or the mere appearance. He is after our hearts... what is from within. The outcome belongs to Him. Our faithful and total obedience, no matter how insignificant it may be, can be used by the Lord to work out unimaginable blessings our human eye can see.

Opening Prayer Call to Worship Welcome Praise and Worship Sermon - Pastor Santos Yao Tithes and Offerings Announcements Benediction Closing Song

Suppose someone should offer me a plateful of crumbs after I had eaten a T-bone steak. I would say, "No, thank you. I am already satisfied." Christian, that is the secret you can be so filled with the things of Christ, so enamoured with the things of God that you do not have time for the sinful pleasures of the world. Billy Graham
