Q. What should I know about Beagles?
If you’ve never spent time around beagles, you’ll want to ask yourself if it’s the right breed for you. Off the charts in cuteness-factor, Beagles are marvelous pets but they are not for everyone. Read about what makes them tick… Personality Beagles are currently the 5th most popular breed in America, according to the American Kennel Club. Why so popular? Not too big or small, they are energetic, happy, fun-loving and even-tempered dogs that are great with kids and pets, often including cats. Aggression of any kind is rare (although our beagles show their “stuffies” no mercy). Very eager-to-please and gentle, these dogs are intelligent and typically have strong and memorable personalities. With shining eyes, warm smile and wagging tail the Beagle will communicate his love and loyalty. We recommend that basic manners training begin as soon as a new puppy enters the home. They have a strong capability to learn at this stage, and should establish good habits right from the start. Just remember, that like the beagle-children they are, attention spans are short and they easily become bored with repetition, so keep lessons simple and short. Be consistent. Sticking to only one lesson at a time will keep them from being confused as to what you are asking them to do. They are not as easily “trainable” as some breeds, such as Collies and German Shepherds, but they will respond to consistent obedience training with rewards rather than punishment. In addition your local library, many of which have online search services nowadays, will have several dog training books and even videos for lend.
