The throiile control is locoted on the right side of the dosh ponel. This lever confrols engine speed. Roise the lever to operote ihe iroctor; lower the lever to the stort the engine.

The broke pedol is locoted ot the right side of the t r o c t o r . P u s h i n gd o w n o n f h e p e d o l o p p l i e s t h e b r o k e . Nofe: When coming to d sfop olwoys depress the clutch pedol os well os the broke pedol so thot the tronsmission will be disconnected from the engine.

The choke conrrol is locoted on the left side of the dosh ponel. Roise the choke lever to the cold stort position when storting ihe engine. Return slowly to Run position ofter the engine stcrts. lf lhe engine is worm ond hos been running, choking moy not be n e c e s s o r yl o r e s t o r l i t .

The clutch pedol is locored oi rhe left side of the troclor. Pushing down on the clutch pedol does two things: (l ) Declutches the troctor drive belt, disconnecting the engine from fhe tronsmission; (2) ,A,ctuotes o sofety interlock switch, so the storter will operote. Engoging the cluich is done by releosingthe pedol which tightens the drive belt. Alwoys releqse the pedol slowly when engoging the clutch. Alwoys depress the pedol when shifting the tronsmission into or out of geor ond when storting the engine.

IGNITION SWITCH

The ignition switch is locored on ihe upper portion of the dosh ponet, jusr righr of center. The ignition s w i t c h h o s t h r e e p o s i t i o n sf r o m l e f t t o r i g h t : ( l ) O f t , (2) Run, (3) Stort. To storl rhe engine. turn the key o l l t h e w o y t o t h e r i g h r . R e l e o s et h e k e y w h e n t h e engine storts ond it will ouromoticolly return to the Run position. When the switch is turned off, the e n g i n e s t o p s o n d o l l e l e c t r i c o lo c c e s s o r i e s r e t u r n e d o off.

8. GEAR SHIFT TEVER


The geor shift lever is locoted iust in front of the seoi. Select ony of three forword speeds or reverse by moving the lever to the position indicoted on the shift pottern decol on the geor shift knob.

9. 4. pTO (POWER TAKE-OFF) CTUTCH LEVER

RANGESEIECTOR

The PTO clutch lever is locored on the right side of the iroctor, between the porking broke ond the broke pedol. Power driven oitochments ore engoged ond disengoged with rhe PTO lever. To engoge the PTO, push lever forword. To disengoge, pull the lever bock. The PTO lever octuotes o sofety interlock switch; therefore, rhe PTO lever must be in the disengoged posifion before the engine will storf.

Run the engine qt full throttle for two minutes to ollow engine to worm-up dnd then engqge the lrqnsmission clutch by pushing the lever down. For temperolures belween O'ond 3O"F (-I8" qnd -2"C| ollow the tronsmission lo run in neutrql for 5 minutes before ottempting lo set the unil inlo molion. The motion of your troctor is controlled by o single "Motion Control Lever". To go forword. simply push the lever forword. The forther forword the lever is pushed, the foster the iroctor will go.

The troctor is stopped by o "dynomic broking" oction inside the hydrostotic tronsmission ond o mechonicol broke. The troctor moy hove o slight tendency to roll when stopped on o slope, if the motion control lever hos been used to slop lhe troclor. When operoting your troctor on o slope lhe irqctor cqn be stopped from rolling by depressing the broke pedol.

Becouse of the "dynomic broke" feoture of the hydrostotic tronsmission,the lroctor con be pushed for only o few feet before the reor wheels will lock. lf for some reoson the troctor must be pushed, the monuol byposs Push Volve must be opened. The volve is locoted on the left side of the troctor obove the footrest on D-Series lroctors, ond inboord of the left reor wheel on C-series troctors. To operote the volve, follow the instructionson the "push volve,, decol.The volve hos o squore heod ond con be opened or closed with o wrench. B-SERIES: Remove the oil filler plug on the right side of the engine block by turning the cop counterclockwise. The oil level should be to the top of the oil fill tube. Add oil os necessory. C-SERIES: On single cylinder engines with oil filler tubes. remove the dipstick by lwisling the cop slightly to loosen the seol ond then pull the dipstick out of the tube. Single cylinder engines without oil filler tubes hove o combinotion filler plug ond dipstick locoted on the right side of the engine block. Turn the plug counterclockwise with o wrench to remove il. Twin cylinder engines hove o dipstick, ond o seporote oil filler plug. The filler plug is locoted oi the top of ihe engine, just forword of the dipstick tube. D-SERIE5: Remove the D-160 dipstick from the oil fill tube by twisting the cop slightly to loosen the seol ond then pull the dipstick out of the tube. The engine oil in your new Wheel Horse should be chonged ofter ihe first 2 hours of operotion. Thereofter, the oil should be chonged ot 25 operoting hour inlervols. lf operoiing conditionsore extremely dusty or dirty the frequency of oil chonges should be increosed.

Foilure lo chonge the engine oil (ond oil filrer on D-Series models) oi recommended intervols con leod fo serious domoge to the engine. This is especiolly true when using detergent oils which qre designed to hold impurities in suspension; when the sqiurotion point is reoched, the oil moy suddenly breok down lo form o gelotin like substonce which seriously impoirs ond cqn even stop the flow of oil. Increqse the frequency of oil ond oil filter chonges if rhe froclor is operoted under exlremely dusty conditions.

Before chonging the oil, stort the engine ond ollow it io worm up. This will ollow the oil lo flow more f reely. Shut off the engine ond remove the key. Disconnect the spork plug wire(s) lo prevenf occidenlol storting of the engine when chonging oil.

B-SERIES: To service the oir filter, remove the two screws ond lift off the complete oir cleoner ossembly. Remove the screen ond spocers from the foom element ond remove the elemenl from the body of ihe oir cleoner. Wosh the foom element in o solution of liquid detergent ond woter. Wrop the foom in o cleon cloth ond squeeze dry. Soturote the element in cleon engine oil (some viscosity os is presently being used in the engine) ond squeeze to remove excess oil. The best time to odd woter is iusi prior to operoting the troclor so the woter will mix with the solution. Do not overfill the bottery. The electrolyte solution is corrosive ond overfilling con couse domoge to surrounding metol ports. The bottery should be moinioined oi 1.260 specific groviiy chorge. When the bottery hos been out of the troclor for servicing, toke core io connect the cobles to lhe bottery exoctly os lhey were before removol. For longest service life, the bottery should be kept cleon by wiping it off with o poper towel. Oil Level

Automotic Tronsmission Dipstick (C-Series Shown) The lubricont level should be checked before eoch use. The dipstick is locoted in o filler tube coming up f r o m t h e f r o n s m i s s i o n .R e m o v e t h e d i p s t i c k o n d c l e o n the stick with o cleon lint free rog. Replocethe dipstickond remove ogoin. The oil level should be mointoined between the "F" ond "1" levels on the dipstick. Never operote ihe troctor with fhe oil BELOW or ABOVE the morks on the dipsiick. Add oil os necessory. Reploce dipsiick.

light Bulb Replocement


Heodlight ond toil light bulbs (on models so equipped) ore reploced os described below. Core should be token when hondling the bulbs, porticulorly if they ore broken. B & C-SERIES: To reploce the heodlight bulbs, first remove the screws securing the heodlight lens. Push the bulb down in its socket ond turn counterclockwise to remove it. To reploce o roil light bulb, pry the lens off with o screwdriver. A slot is locoted of eoch end of the lens for this purpose.Pushthe bulb down in its socket ond turn counterclockwiseto remove it. D-5ERIE5: Either seoled beom heodlomp unit is reploced by disconnecting the terminol wires ond pushing the heodlomp out of the rubber grommet. The heodlomp is instolled by inserting it into the rubber grommei f rom the fronl, moking sure the locoting tob on lhe lomp is seofed properly in the notch provided in ihe rubber grommet. Reconnectwires to the some terminol from which they were removed. Looking ot the seoled beqm unit from the reor, the yellow (hot) wire connectsto the left terminol ond the red (ground) w i r e c o n n e c t st o t h e r i g h t i e r m i n o l . The toil light bulbs ore reploced os described in t h i s s e c t i o n f o r B & C - S e r i e st r o c t o r s . To odiust the PTO clutch: l. 2. 3. R e m o v et h e g r i l l e o n d d i s e n g o g e t h e p T O c l u t c h . Loosen the two broke brocket bolts. Loosenthe lock nuts ond odiust the turnbuckle on lhe clutch rod so thot the reor clutch plote focing iust cleors the pulley, ollowing it to be turned freely by hond. Engoge PTO clutch ond check tension. The wosher ot the front end of the clutch rod should iust cleor the trunnion so it con be turned by hond. Apply o smoll omounl of "moly" greose on the cronkshoft ond key. 5. Moke sure there is o spocer wosher inside the front hub next to the internol snop ring, which determines the position of the hub on the cronkshoft. Line up the keywoy of the front cluich plote with the cronkshoft key orrd slide the plote ond pulley ossembly in position on the cronkshoft. Instoll the retoining bolt, wosher, ond end cop ond tighten securely. 6. Checkond odiust clutchond broke os described in ihe PTO clutch odiustment section.

The seot tilts forword; on D-Series troclors the seot is retoined in the forword position by plocing the hoirpin cotter in the hole provided. The hoirpin cotter is stored in the odiocent hole. The seot moy olso be moved forword or reorword by loosening the four seot plote lo seoi spring bolts, ond sliding lhe seol forword or reorword os desired. Retiqhten the four bolts.

After 30 doys, pointed surfoces moy be woxed to protect ihe lustre of the originol finish. The troclor should be woshed regulorly with o mild outomotive type detergent ond woter. Exposed bore melol surfoces should be cooied with oil or o light cooting of greose lo prevent rust until permonent repoirs con be mode. Apply o thin coot of "moly" greose on the hub where the woshers ond beorings go on ond then instoll the spring woshers os followst The first wosher is cupped up - like o soucer wiih the outer edges up. The second wosher with the outer edges down. Then the third wosher like rhe first, hos the outer edges up. Finolly the fourth wosher hos the outer edges down. After the four cup woshers ore instolled,ploce the ploin wosher on lop of them. 2. Plocethe pulley ond beoring ossembly on over the front clutch hub with the notched section of the pulley up.
