Writing
This week we focused on stretching our small moments by using our 5 senses. We put ourselves back in our small moment and thought about what we saw, heard, felt, smelled or tasted. This has really brought our writing to life! In shared reading we learned how good readers think about their thinking. No longer are we allowed to robot read in our classroom. We made a reading salad and it had TEXT tomatoes and THINKING lettuce. Every time we read text we added tomatoes and every time we thought about our reading we added lettuce. In the end, our salad was quite a mixture.

Noun Town
Last week we did some learning on what a noun is. We made a “noun town” in the hallway for display. Everything in our town is a noun!

Literacy Stations
Now that we have achieved some independence, I was able to pull students to begin small group reading instruction. Groups are determined by the needs of the child, not necessarily by the level they are reading.

Math Workshop
In math we worked on solving story problems. We learned to visualize while we read them and retold them to ensure we understand the problem. We used many different math tools to help us solve the problems. Different tools we used were: the hundreds chart, number line, drawing pictures, tally marks or expanded notation. In addition we began learning about our doubles. Doubles facts are important because they are easy to remember and can be used as a base when adding other numbers. If you know 5+5 then 5+6 is just 1 more. We made a class doubles book and played a new game.

Readers Workshop
This week in reader’s workshop we practice making our own reading salad with our partners. As students read with each other, one was in charge of tracking how much thinking was happening and how much text was being read.
