BELOVEDS IN CHRIST,

lessed by God through the Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Los Angeles, the Primate of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church, the Dean of Saint Sophias Orthodox Cathedral, the Executive of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California, Imams from the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California and our own three Bishops in the presence of the Mayor and the President of the City Council of Los Angeles and the Conservator of the Organ at Walt Disney Concert Hall directing an Interfaith Choir . . . we were at One Light, One Peace, One World gathered to reflect, renew and unite in common cause and prayer to remember the tenth anniversary of 9-11-01 and embrace future harmony on the evening before 9-11-11 at the west steps of Los Angeles City Hall beneath King Solomons wise, enlightening words, Righteousness exalteth a people (Proverbs 14:34). To me, such moments are the beauty of being a member of a diocese for such gathering is possible only on a level larger than any congregation, even ours. So often we think of diocese as the basic unit of administration in The Episcopal Church to which we pay taxes or dues in the form of an annual pledge to the Mission Share Fund. But the diocese is much more; it is our ministry in the name of Christ Jesus. Some teach that it is the primary unit in The Episcopal Church. An Episcopal Dictionary of the Church defines diocese as: The territorial jurisdiction of a diocesan bishop. The term also refers to the congregations and church members of the geographical area. the congregations and church members We are the diocese! Our Diocese enables many, many ministries. World mission and the domestic mission of ministry with higher education are especially dear in my heart. Locally, the latter means Canterbury Irvines campus ministry at the University of California at Irvine. Canterbury Irvine is our ministry. It is us! So many Saint Michael & All Angelites are pillars of UCI: Peltasons, McCullochs, Schells, Nelsons, Montgomerys, Maradudins, Wallis, Smecker-Hanes, DiMentos, Arasasinghams, Bob Hine, Cal McLaughlin, Mary Bailey, Terry Parsons & Anette Johnson, and more. Members of Saint Michael & All Angels were instrumental in founding Canterbury Irvine and we have consistently supported this ministry.

ABOUT SAINT MICHAEL & ALL ANGELS CORONA DEL MAR

We are a Christian Community of the Anglican Communion who come to hear Gods word and receive and share the Lord Jesus Christ. Our purpose is to have Christ live in us in order that in Christ we may live faithful and productive Christian lives. Our commitment to the Gospel is evangelical; our liturgical tradition, catholic; our theology orthodox but open to thought, reflection, and spiritual endeavor. We care about the world and strive to serve Christ in it.

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it.[Proverbs 22:6] Fall is in the air, and we are gearing up for a great season of learning and fellowship in Christian Education. In early September, Saint Michael & All Angels had a successful Sunday School registration. With a dozen new school-agers primed and ready to learn more about the Word of God and the history of the Episcopal Church, and a half dozen dedicated volunteers ready to teach, this should be a blessed and fulfilling year. We have finished off Strong as a topic with lessons about Joshua, Gideon, Paul in Prison, and St. Michael. Not that our teaching will weaken with the next topic! Next up we have Clare and Francis of Assisi whilst we study FIRE! So what happens when you teach Fire to a crowded Sunday school? They learn about Mt. Sinai and the 10 Commandments, as well as the Fiery Pillar that led Gods people to the Promised Land. Culminating in our outrageously fun Cavalcade of Saints, our youngest parishioners will don the costumes of their favorite Christian Saints, and the whole congregation will learn the valuable lessons that their stories of fiery conviction and faith have for us modern Christians. We are always looking for volunteers to work as Sunday School helpers, one Sunday a month or even every other month. Just let Anne Conover know that you want to help out and she will give you an assignment.

WILLIAM TYNDALE (c1495-1536) Protestant Reformer, Bible Translator, Scholar illiam Tyndale was born in Gloustershire, England, about 1495. He received the BA degree from Oxford University and was appointed subdeacon in 1512; in 1515, after studies that included theology, he was awarded the MA degree. He was acclaimed a man of virtuous disposition and from 1517-1521 he studied at Cambridge. Tyndale was a gifted linguist; in addition to his native English he was fluent in French, Greek, Hebrew, German, Italian, Latin and Spanish. Around 1521 he became Chaplain to the House of Sir John Walsh, Little Sudbury, where he tutored Sir Johns children. At this point his controversial opinions on the authority and practices of church hierarchy began to be apparent. He denounced prayers to saints; he taught justification by faith, adult baptism, the return of Christ and the mortality of the soul (the soul would be uncomprehending from the moment of bodily death until the Judgment Day). In a furious argument with a learned clergyman who defended the ultimate authority of the Pope, Tyndale responded heatedly in words famous to this day, I defy the Pope and all his laws; if God spare my life ere many years I will cause the boy that driveth the plow to know more of the scripture than thou knowest. He went to work on his translation, coining words and phrases that enriched the English language but were seen by the church hierarchy as a threat to the Popes claim to be Christs terrestrial representative. Church leaders feared erosion of their social power if the laity could read the Bible in their own language. In order to go forward with his translation of the New Testament, William needed the approval of the Bishop of London. The bishop denied his request, saying that there were 2,000 errors in Williams work. Despairing of official support, he left for Germany in 1524. From this point forward his life reads like a cloak and dagger story, as

Henry VIII (whose divorce from Catherine he denounced), Cardinal Woolsey and others sought to destroy his work of translation and destroy him. (Thomas More wrote a six volume condemnation of Tyndale alleging he was a traitor and heretic.) In 1529, William Tyndale, fearing for his life, went into hiding while he continued his work, not only on his translation of the New Testament, but also on other books of the Bible and religious subjects. He completed and revised his priceless translation into English of the New Testament in 1534. Thanks to the invention of the printing press, his work was widely circulated and read, even though it was banned and ordered burned in England. In 1535, William was betrayed to the authorities; he was seized, tried on charges of heresy, convicted and put to death by strangulation at Vilvoorde Castle, near Brussels, in 1536. His last words on the scaffold were prophetic: Lord, open the King of Englands eyes. Along with his contemporaries, Martin Luther (Germany), John Calvin (France) and Ulrich Zwingli (Switzerland), William Tyndale was a leading figure in the 16th Century Protestant Reformation that changed Christianity forever. His life will be celebrated at the regular Holy Eucharist with Healing at Noon on Thursday, October 6, 2011.

We know from centuries of experience that faith is not so much taught as caught. ...Children catch the meaning of the good news of Jesus. Do singers in a church choir contribute more of their time to church activities than members-at-large? Do singers in the choir tend to give more financially to their church home? Are singers in a church choir more likely to assume leadership roles within a faith community? Based on my experience, I would say so, but it would be great to see some research done on this.
