TECUMSEH Never been to the Art Bra Auction? Oct. 20 might be your last chance to experience this unique fundraiser, benefiting the Womens Health Center at ProMedica Herrick Hospital. Shelley Lim, cultural and leisure services director for the city of Tecumseh, is one of the seven committee members who organize the auction each year. This is the seventh and final year for the event, Lim said. Its a fantastic event, she said. Seven years ago, we made a commitment to Herrick Memorial Hospital Womens Health Center that we would raise $50,000 and we believe this year we will be meeting that goal, so once we accomplish that, we want to explore different options for fundraising and try something new. The auction is set for 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Purple Pear Tree, 109 W. Logan Street, one block north of downtown Tecumseh. A typical auction features 70-100 decorated bras
round out the committee. We are still accepting entries, Lim said. I am amazed every year at the creativity of the artists submitting their work. When we put out our call for entries throughout the county and beyond, we are looking for artists interpretation of bra art. It could be a bra that is decorated or created. We have had photographers, jewelers, pastels, watercolors, oil paintings. We try not to put any constraints on the artists folks have created their own expressions. Lim said everything last year sold and the event raised $14,000. Everything went home with somebody, she said. We had 200 to 250 people last year a nice crowd. Beth Kennedy of Evans Street Station said the finale will be bittersweet. We have been putting on this event for seven years and we want to go out with a bang, Kennedy said. There are several reasons and motivations for this being our final event, we are fulfilling our $50,000 pledge to the Womens Health Center at Herrick and we
are all very involved in many philanthropic events. So, this will be a great party our best yet. I think the reason this event has been so successful is so many local businesses support it. Everything is donatedmarkets and local restaurants prepare food for 200-plus people so all proceeds are donated and go directly to the cause. Kennedy called the event cool, one-of-a-kind and like nothing Ive ever seen. Its done in really good taste, though, and we have fun with it, she said. Lim sees the group moving on to something equally fun and crowd-pleasing. The committee as a whole has enjoyed being involved in raising funds and I know we will come up with something in the future, said Lim. This is such a grassroots event and we enjoy being so involved in the community.
