Looking Back at Ultra Leftist Trail of Terror
Bunibroto and Aron
Aronite thinking presents a brief look back on how it happened and why it happened- the Rubbish that was Ultra Leftist Communist extremist movements in India. A needless baggage Indians carry from a long dead and failed deal.
From the era of Lenin, Stalin and Moa s that Russians and Chinese themselves have unceremoniously buried. Thanks the real politick at India, Bunibroto reveals how this is hardly a dead and damp squid and could revive again its cults of death.
“Rubbish”- but which one? - The Game Ultras Lost Playing at Bengal
Bunibrata das Gupta with Aron
History of Telengana Movement and the beginning of Naxal movement happened only simultaneously. Telangana will always remain the’ glorious chapter’ in the history of ‘peasant struggles’ for Indian communists. So many historians believe that rise and fall of first Telengana movement in 1946-1951 has still left lot to do. Telangana also facilitated the growth of three distinct lines within the Indian communist movement.
Nowadays Bharatiya Janata Party is the only party who openly declares support for smaller state to enable smooth administration. During UPA1 we have seen left has always distanced them from the demand of Telengana.
They knew if they fuel this division, they will have to support Gorkhaland. They have vociferously called BJP as separatist force during last Loksabha and assembly elections. Congress and TMC joined the chorus as well. They never told us yet the logic behind making Goa as a separate state, which has lesser area.
After 19 51, a communist government was formed through the ballots in Kerala in 1957 but was promptly dethroned. Elsewhere an incident in a remote area transformed the history of left-wing extremism in India.
In a remote village called Naxalbari in West Bengal, a tribal youth named Bimal Kissan, having obtained a judicial order, went to plough his land on2 March 1967. The local landlords attacked him with the help of their goons. Tribal people of the area retaliated and started forcefully recapturing their lands. What followed was a rebellion, which left one police sub inspector and nine tribal’s dead... Adaptation of the All India Coordination Committee of Communist Revolutionaries (AICCCR) recommendations which says – ‘Allegiance to the armed struggle and non-participation in the elections’ distanced power seeking and extremist fractions. Soon the First United front Government was formed in Bengal... a coalition of broad Leftists with Marxists.
These two factions- ‘democratic’ CPI and CPMs and the Ultra leftists- the CPM Marxist Leninists at once became enemy but they used same specific terms of Communism while giving lectures.
The Extremist version mainly operated underground from specific section jungles in Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Orissa, Jharkhand, Bihar& west Bengal. In the turmoil of uncertainties in late seventies in Bengal, huge number of super-intelligent brains got out of the country. After CPIM led left front started governance in 1977 the extremism of ultra left virtually stopped. That peace led such inefficient government to rule for a record tenure in the history of India.
Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Orissa were the states where Naxalite forces were operating. But their intention was certainly not to disturb Bengal and this made analysts believe that they have huge number of sympathizers existed as infiltrators within the elected Bengal Communist ministry. That picture however, changed since Budhdhadeb secured landslide victory for left front in 2006.
Like Deng in China - Many bookish communists & sympathizers of Naxals were denied participation in government, CM’s declaration to bring private investors in Bengal acted as fuel. The break at once triggered Retaliation by the Ultra Leftists on ‘bourgeoisie democrat Communists’.
So unprecedented attack on CPIM workers took place in “Jungle Mahal” of Midnapore district. Sensing the smell of power Trinamool Congress a breakaway regional assertive Mamata Banerjee gave support to them. Financial support from inside and militarily support from outside(mainly from China),CPI (Maoist) became the cause of subsequent devastation of Bengali hopes of Post- Maoist-China line of Industrialization once again gone on spin.
Sensing the gap and rift the leaders of Trinamul openly declared war against Central government for providing Para-military operation in the area. CPIM workers, common men, paramilitary Jawans and such ‘Counter revolutionaries were ruthlessly killed. Budhdhadeb Bhattacharya the Reformist never dared to hold meetings there at allBut yet the fledgling Trinamool Congress did that very often without any attack ever happening by Ultra leftists on their leaders.
That was to be the Commercial break on the movie show called “Rise of Naxals”
Coming to power, the new Chief Minister who had first taken on the ‘democratic comrades’ started to change her ways of thinking. This could have also been learnt from Comrades themselves- one at a time befriending the other?
She knew also the kind of hardware and ammo accumulated in Midnapore the fort of Ultras and that might at any time be trained against her own regime. The shrewd lady at once ordered the haul of these Ultra leftist arsenals. Huge caches of heavy weaponry and light arms ammunitions recovered. More than it harmed deadly CPIM this caused did most harm to Naxalites there. Going thorough, she then ordered Recruitment of Locals into her police force.
It irked them again, since these people knew a lot about the Ultra left insurrectionists. To be fair it must be said she declared a general Amnesty for the Ultra left Naxals, but expectedly the Ultra Leftists dogmatically refused.
The Telengana & Bengal intelligentsia – leftist authors and singers who were instrumental in bringing armed movement here again in Bengal strangely started to acquire quietude- became stone silent. They probably found intellectual defence of the futility of armed struggle in post- soviet and post communist world.
One Trinamul singer & MP Suman openly distanced himself from the Party.
Telengana activists once again resurfaced in the vigorous struggle movement in Andhra Pradesh where Telangana is located. It is now, 30 days and the ‘struggle’ keeps going on.
Power lover Left parties sat on the fence. While the origin of whole Telengana movement is a communist movement since 1946, they don’t have any more the same courage to take a stance on this. Violent faction of Left once again alone remains active there. So we see how the centre of Left political violence now got shifted to Telengana and why?
Chief Minister of West Bengal called them for talks -Maoists refused. Central Home Minister informed Chief Minister that Naxalites were planning to kill her. This mustn’t have surprised their old ally who knew their ways. The CM committed to economic revival now restarts Military operations there again in Lalgarh the hotbed and their alliance’s battle ground- the political game we see already lost by clueless and dogmatic Ultras who now face not a political foe like Communist Party of Marxists unpopular with mass- but a woman who is hailed as a harbinger of economic and political change and a Revolutionary.
Many wonder rightly why she protested against such anti-Ultra left security forces’ operations before coming to power. Now we see it was a one up from the Communist books? “To adroitly exploit the divisions within the Bourgeoisie parties” to eventually finish each political force in turns as advised by Marx?
Mamata Banerjee the new CM who rose on the shoulders of this clueless Peasant insurrectionist curtly- turns down the offered conditional “cease fire” for one month. “Nearly a fortnight has passed since our ceasefire offer but there has been no response from the government yet,” Akash, the CPI (Maoist) state secretary, said in a statement issued in West Midnapore. Expectedly- the CM tatted and called this “Rubbish”. The bloomer Ultra leftists then resort to the only no brainer line of action.
Times of India reported in September 2011 West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is a Maoist target. "They are trying to kill me," Banerjee said in a television interview this morning. She claimed that she and the union minister of state for shipping, Mukul Roy, were living under threat. She was reacting to the two murders in Jangalmahal since last night. One of the murder victims was Babu Basu, a senior leader of the Jharkhand Samanway Party.
Latest incidence of threat calls made to Central Minister Sougata Roy and State Minister Madan Mitra. Open death threats in front of police. Nothing to speculate who has done this. No other groups other than Naxals can do this. CPM is totally broken force now.
All along the Ultra leftist we see fail to see the ground slipping from under their feet, and each move comes as they get further marginalised and uprooted. Mamata stays one step ahead of their own game and gains more allies from Left and right of spectrum.
So it is clear the much sought Ultra leftists’ ‘Bloodshed—will get whetted only elsewhereIn Telengana – where this will continue and a new chapter of Extremism will be rewritten in Bengal. That is written off in Bengal. The two states which have long history of left politics, many things might be coming to write about for posterity in the History book.
The bloody tale of Ultra Leftist insurrection may not be over yet……….
