Into His Wild
“He was alone. He was unheeded, happy, and near to the wild heart of life. He was alone, and young and wilful and wildhearted, alone amid a waste of wild air and brackish waters and the seaharvest of shells and tangle and veiled grey sunlight.” - James Joyce (pg 31) McCandless was a bear- paw poppy: Arctomecon californica they're called. Bear-paw poppies are wildflowers and in the spring they briefly produce this beautiful, bold, and delicate golden bloom. For most of the year, however, it's buried - unnoticed and unadorned on parched ground, arid land. “It is sufficiently rare and it has been classified as an endangered species.” (pg 26) The nature of wildflowers is wild; they are not common, they do not grow beside common flowers. It is unnatural for wildflowers to be bred, cultured or cultivated. This was McCandless: he was a wildflower, everywhere and nowhere, waiting for his spring time and when it came, when it finally came, he bloomed into this beautiful, bold and delicate part of nature. Wild has been attributed to wanderers, lost people, unruly, rude and unkempt individuals. Wild has been used to describe individuals, mostly women or young children, who are not trained, governed or tempered by rules, morals, ethics. This can be in essence 'good' or 'bad.' Wild has also been used to mean creative, fresh, refreshing and crisp: in terms of personality, dress, or perspective. In this context, wild is a positive trait.
