Open source software free software (OSS/FS) involves a community who are dedicated to offering a alternative to commercial software in the belief that anyone regardless of opportunities should have the right to using a computer. Richard Stallman created and founded 'the free software foundation' in 1985. He also co-founded the 'league for programming freedom' in 1989. The major difference between commercial software and open source is that open source is published under licenses to allow the source code be available for anyone to download, explore or change as they wish. In 1991 Linus Torvalds developed a new operating system based on Minix which he named Linux and released it under the General Public License. The next few years Torvanlds received modified versions from other programmers and used the changes into Linux version 1.0 in 1994. People around the world downloaded it and began working with Linux. Linux now runs the 10 fastest supercomputers in the world and can be found on mobile phones, tablets, television, video games, desktop computers and mainframes. Ubuntu was first released in October 2004 and is a free libre open source computer operating system based on Debian GNU/Unix. It was aimed at creating a more user friendly version of Linux. Since then a new version of Ubuntu is released every six months. Ubuntu gets its name from the South African philosophy of Bantu that promotes humanity towards others and the version number also stands for the year and the month and are also given an adjective and a animal name eg.Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal. Hardware specifications
Ubuntu automatically installs GRUB2 (grand unified boot loader) during the installation process to the master boot record of your hard drive. It will detect any other operating and adds entries into Grub2. Although Ubuntu's hardware requirements are quite low and every computer is different you will need to research your computer hardware and make sure it meets the minimal requirements. The minimal hardware is as follows: 1 GHZ x86 processor 512 MB of System Memory 5 GB of Hard Disk Space Graphics card and monitor capable of 800x600 CD/DVD drive or USB Port USB Stick Internet access

While previous versions of Ubuntu used the Gnome panel. Ubuntu 11 now uses the 3D Unity as the default graphic user interface. To run Unity you will need a capable graphics card.

The following hardware is the required capabilities to run Unity All Graphics Processing Units released 2011 by either NVidia, AMD or Intel. All Graphics Processing Units released by NVidia and AMD over the last 5 years. All Graphics Processing Units released by Intel after the GMA 950 (*). If you are unsure if your system can run Unity, there is a test program you can run with the following command in the terminal. /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p

USB Installation process

Go to the official Ubuntu Website http://www.ubuntu.com and download either 32-bit or 64bit image file depending on your system.

It will prompt you on whether you wish to save the file to your hard drive or open with. Open with will take you to your default disk burning software and you would burn the iso image from here.

Insert a blank formatted USB stick into your computer. Go to the Website http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/ and download the Universal USB Installer.

Read the License Agreement and to continue installation click I Agree

Select the version of Linux you wish to download and install from the drop down box, then point to the location of your iso file and select your flash drive letter for the install to take place.

Ubuntu will now execute and install on your USB drive.

Installing Ubuntu
You must restart your computer and hit the delete key to take you into the boot bios menu. Go into the boot section and change the boot priority order to boot from USB. You must now save and reboot your computer again. When your computer reboots it will read the USB Ubuntu installation image. Click on install Ubuntu booting from USB.

The installation begins with giving you the option to either try Ubuntu or to install the operating system directly onto your hard drive. You must also select your language.

You may download updates while you are installing Ubuntu however this method will slow down the installation and may take over a hour to install. If this box is unchecked the install will only take around fifteen minutes. Once the install has completed you can download your updates, this is a more stable way of doing the installation.

Select weather you want to upgrade, or do a fresh installation. If you chose to do a fresh installation you will need to partition your hard drive.

Chose what drive you wish to do your installation on. The minimal partition should be at least 3GB.

After you have made your partitioning selections the installation will continue by asking for your current location.

You will need to select your keyboard layout.

Here you are asked you to enter your name, this will be the user name that you will use to log in to the system and a password. The password must be a combination of letters and numbers. When you set your password be sure to remember or write down what you have entered. If you forget it, you will not be able to log in. You can even chose to encrypt your home folder during this process.

Now that all the information is complete, Ubuntu will begin to copy files to your hard drive. You will be shown a series of information screens that you can read while the installation finishes.

The installation is now finished. You must restart the computer and log in with your user name.

Customization, Post Installation

After the Computer has rebooted and you have entered your user password, go to the applications drop down menu and select Ubuntu software center. Here you will find the latest updates and drivers. Other third party downloads are also available.

When you select Ubuntu software center it will be followed by this screen, here you can chose to manually download and learn about some of Ubuntu's features.

As the Administrator you will be asked for your user password while making any changes to the system. Update manager does a 'system testing' to determine whether any updates are available. It is advised that you install all updates and this will fix any bugs and make your system run smoother. By default Ubuntu checks daily for updates and will notify you.

Here you can update security. Ubuntu generally does not need anti virus software.

Ubuntu comes with a small selection of desktop wallpaper. You can find more at http://art.gnome.org/backgrounds/ . To change the background simply right click on the desktop and the appearance dialog box will appear, select background and choose a wallpaper.

You can also change the theme and fonts if you like, or visit http://art.gnome.org/themes/metacity for a much greater choice.

New features in Ubuntu 11.04

One of the best new features of Ubuntu 11.04 with it's modern looks, is the 3D Unity vertical task bar. Unity displays icons for commonly-used applications and programs that are actively running. You can also customize the applications you want. Clicking on an icon will give the application 'focus' if it's already running or open it if it's not running. If you click the icon that already has focus, Unity will activate an expose style view of all the open windows associated with that application which is a very handy tool. To run the 3D version of Unity you will be required to have the correct video card hardware requirements. You can do this by going to the manufactures website and download the correct linux drivers for your system.

Another new feature is the Dash graphical user interface. This is another short cut menu to your favorite applications. You can also search for any installed programs which is a handy feature.

Ubuntu 11.04 now comes pre-installed with LibreOffice. LibreOffice is a free software office suite and is compatible with other major office suites and available on a variety of platforms. LibreOffice is available in more than 30 languages. This office suite has the same features as Open-Office so it will be easy for users to open existing documents in LibreOffice. Under the applications menu you will find the Ubuntu software center. Here you will find a enormous amount of free software in there categories. Installing the software is as simple as finding it in the package list, double clicking and then clicking the install button.

You can also download some good quality games. Most are for free or you might have to pay a small fee.

Basic essential applications

To set up Facebook, click the envelope icon in the top right hand corner of the task bar. Then select broadcast from the drop down box. A screen will appear giving you the options to add a new account.

You can follow the same process as above to set up Twitter and Identi.ca.

With instant messaging being one of the biggest ways for people to communicate in the work place, Empathy is the default messaging program in Ubuntu. It can be found by going to applications>internet. Empathy can also be used for voice and video chat as well as using Google talk.

Banshee is Ubuntu's new default media player. It includes Mp3, audiobooks,video, podcast and radio. It also supports some very powerful online media such as Amazon, Miro guide and Ubuntu's online music store.

Setting up Evolution Email Account

Evolution is the standard email client that comes with Ubuntu. As well as email it handles contacts, calendars and helps you manage tasks. To set up Evolution click on the envelope icon at the top right hand corner. You will get a drop down box saying set up mail. You will see a welcome screen followed by the identity screen. Here you can use a existing email account or set up a new one.

The next screen will set up you outgoing mail protocol. You will need to name your mail server eg.hotmail or gmail etc.

Next you will have to set up your incoming mail. Check what ever boxes suit your needs.

Now you must name your incoming server type, either pop3 or imap. In the configuration box you must also name the same server followed by your email client.

Note if you are using gmail, you must go to your gmail account and in settings go to IMAP access and select enable IMAP. If you do not follow this step then you will not be able to receive your email in any email client.

Select a description name for this account.

As you can see Evolution is very similar to Outlook and can preform the same functions.

Ubuntu One (cloud)

In Ubuntu 11.04 one of the best new features is it's free online cloud storage application called Ubuntu One. This service is built into the desktop and can be accessed from system>preferences>ubuntu one. When you signup you will receive 5 gig of free network space. This can also be accessed on multiple computers with access from Ubuntu's desktop. You can get an additional 20gig account for $3.99 a month or $39.99 a year, which helps support future development. An Ubuntu One account is also needed to purchase music from the Ubuntu One music store.

The first step is to enter your email address and password and click new account.

Now you can create your Ubuntu One account by entering your name, email address, password and the code. The password must consist of 8 characters one uppercase and one number.

You will be sent a email for verification and you will receive a code. Enter this code in the blank box to complete your account.
