Our rst monthly mee ng of the new CIPA year was a rousing success at the new Lone Tree Arts Center, with approximately 85 enthusias c a endees enjoying

the new surround ings. The only problems encountered were associated with having a larger crowd than an cipated. Not a bad problem to have!

Meanwhile, the revolu on in publish ing con nues unabated. Borders is no more. Amazon is about to release a color Kindle and is now making ebooks

available to libraries across the coun try. The total percentage of sales com

ing from ebooks con nues to grow for

tradi onal publishers such as Hache e (2 2% of revenue), HarperCollins (19% of U.S. revenue) , and Simon & Sc huster (18% of revenue).

As we heard from the panelists at the

September monthly mee ng, it is not a ques on of whether to publish a print book or an ebook, it is a qu es on of when an d how to publish BOTH.

As is going to be the prac ce this year,

the monthly mee ng was followed up on October 4 with a more in depth explora on of the monthly mee ng topic at what is being called a “Fo c us Forum.”

A nice crowd a ended a two part

presenta on at a Barnes and Noble bookstore that included a brie ng on the new color Nook ereader and a demonstra on of the ebook conversion process.

November 2010

Our rela onships with other organiza ons con nue to grow and develop. I recently had the opportunity to make a presenta on on the merits of CIPA membership to the Crea ve Connec ons Meetup group at the rst mee ng of the group in their new loca on. This grou p represents great connec ons for CIPA to freelance businesses that can support its independent authors and publishers.

CIPA College is con nuing its experiment in oering classes outside the Denver metro area with three classes being

o ered in Fort Collins on October 29. The

event is being hosted by the Northern Colorado Writers and is open to CIPA members and nonmembers alike. As with past events this year, par cipants may elect to sign up for one, two, or all three classes.

In closing, it is dicult not to comment on the passing of Steve Jobs, whose iPad set the b enc hmark for tablet devices and moved ePub to the forefront of ebook formats. He was a visionary who put his dreams into prac ce and did so with excellence. He is a role model for all who have a dream. And doesn’t that incl ude every CIPA member?

I look forward to seeing you at the Octo

ber 22 mee ng, where our two expert presenters will teach you how to build an

author pla orm using prepublica on publicity.

Crea ng Your Marke ng Pla orm—The Art of Pre Publica on Publicity

Whether your book is in print or whether your book is in the pro duc on stage, successful authors know the importance of building an author pla orm with marke ng and publicity. They get that they have to create a marke ng pla orm long before the book is pro duced.

On Saturday, Oct ober 22, 2011, CIPA brings to you two dynamic speakers who are going to help give you usable ps and hands on training to help not just the newbie, but the seasoned author as well:

 Learn how to nd your readers, your audience, your market place

 Survey them bo t h formally and informally so that your marke ng message is geared toward what they want, not what you think they want

 Create the allimportant marke ng pla orm—a list of names of interested people you can market to again and again.

NEW FORMAT! Because we have so much info r ma on to share with you, we’re going to alternate our Roundtable format with a Discussion Topic format for this mee ng.

PrePub Part 1—Talking to your buying audience

ng. Pre ‐ Pub Part 1—Talking to your buying audience Deanne McDonald Presented by Deanne McDonald,

Deanne McDonald

Presented by Deanne McDonald, Managing Partner, Exec Tech Colorado.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is thinking they know what their buyers want. The only way you can really know what your audience wants is by asking them! But before you can ask them, you need to nd them.

In this interac ve, handson discussion, you will get:

 Out of the box ways of nding your audience.

 Prac cal ps on how to nd out how readers feel about the subject of your book. Are they angry, mildly interested, wildly enthusias c? Somewhere in between?

 Ways to develop formal and informal ques ons.

 What to do with the informa on you’ve learned from your survey.

Deanne McDonald has been working with small business owners for over twenty years, helping them to use surveys and other marke ng techniques to hone their marke ng mes- sages and create more eec ve marke ng campaigns. www.exectechweb.com.

concentra ng on beforelaunch strategies (but stu you can also use during and a er your book is out).

You’ll discover:

 The single biggest marke ng mistake most authors make.

 What you need to do before you even START marke ng.

 How to leverage th e power of social media.

 The one marke ng strategy you DON’T want to use.

 How to get other people to do your marke ng for you.

Your Book/Author Onesheet: How to Ensure it’s a Hardworking Mar ke ng and Sales Tool

it’s a Hardworking Mar ‐ ke ng and Sales Tool Patrice Rhoades ‐ Baum On the

Patrice Rhoades Baum

On the surface, a book/author onesheet appears fairly simple. It is, a er all, one page of sales copy intended to help you promote and sell your book. Toss in a graphic of the book cover, your bio, and photo and you’re done, right? Wron g!

Your onesheet is a strategic tool in your marke ng toolkit.

Your book/author onesheet is a hard working marke ng and sales tool. It must help you meet your business objec ves to promote and sell your book. It must clearly state the top benet message for your readers – your sp ecic target audience. It must be professional, both in content and design, to ensure you shine as a professional, are taken seriously, and are o ered every opportunity to promote and sell your book.

How do you make it a hardworking tool?

Transforming your onesheet from a shallow list of informa on to a strategic tool requires some thought you’ll need to put on your marke ng hat. The following ps will guide you to create a hardworking marke ng and sales tool that helps you promote and sell your book.

Start with this checklis t of content and components:

Your marke ng homework – do this rst!

Write down the business objec ves for your onesheet. What do you want this marke ng tool to accomplish? Clarify ing your objec ves gives you a map, of sorts, to ensure you create a hardworking marke ng an d sales tool.

Determine your target audience

Iden fy and write down the top benet your book delivers to your target audience. Iden fy the target audience who will be using your onesheet. Clarify the call toac on for the one sheet recipient. What do you want them to do? What ac on do you want th em to take? This is a key component in marke ng tools.

Graphic components to create or gather

Select and hire a professional designer with onesheet experience. Use a highresolu on image of your book cover. Add your logo, if you have one. Use your brand colors.

Hire a professional photographer – do not use a snapshot! Con sider having a crea ve ph oto taken for you r onesheet, if it would be appropriate for your topic and audience.

Content to write or gather

Select and hire a marke ng copywriter to help you write a brief introductory paragraph introducing the book topic that will deliver a strong bene t message for the target audience (be clear, concise, and compelling!). Write your brief bio, wri en specically for this marke ng tool. Use snippets of 2 to 3 book reviews, if you have them (and you should!).

Include your full contact informa on, including website and pro fessional email address. Include your specic book inf orma on; is it hard cover, so cover, ebook? What genre does it fall un der, etc. Include a bold, compelling call toac on that encourages the buyer to purchase your book!

CIPA member Doug Koktavy’s 2010 best seller, The Legacy of Beezer and Boomer:

Lessons on Living and Dying from My Ca- nine Brothers is one of those evergreen books all authors hope theirs will be. While the book earned good sales and fourteen book awards—including a CIPA EVVY rstplace award—right ou t of the gate, it’s far from forgo en more than a year later. It just received a glowing review from Best Friends Animal Society magazine (SeptemberOctober 2011).

Doug, an a orney in Denver who drew inspira on from his two beloved dogs during their nal days, wrote about a li le u nderstood bu t all too common malady: an cipatory grief when a pet is dying. The book struck a chord with pet owners across the country and Europe, interes ngly leading to increasing sales through word of mouth. Doug is working on a followup guide book for pet owners an d their veterinarians, as well as a memoir about his third dog, a rescue named Coral. Find out more at www.BeezerAndBoomer.com.
