Pillar 2: Rugby Coaching
The essence of the rugby coaching program is the development of each individual student and the progression of their rugby skills. Male or female players, scrum half, prop or wing, will come under the tutelage of some of the best coaches in the world, position for position. The delivery of the program will be on a tutorial basis. Individual positional skills will be developed into unit skills e.g. front row, back row, half-backs. These unit skills will then be developed into the structural techniques of scrummaging, line out, rucks and mauls, attacking play, strategic positional play, defensive strategies and alignments. The generic skills of passing, kicking, tackling and running lines will be addressed in each session in a wide variety of ways by each individual coach. There will be the development of full contact games by the end of the course in ‘Sevens’, ‘Union’ and ‘League’ rugby. These games will be intra-mural initially but will evolve into games with and against rugby clubs in the local Rugby and Coventry communities. There will be short seminars and presentations on such topics as the history of rugby in all its forms, the cultural background to the development of the game in communities, nations and continents throughout the world and an analysis of rugby’s rapid growth in recent years. Unique to this course, several members of the England Women’s team and squad under the leadership of Heather Fisher will work as coaches, mentors, training partners and sometimes, ‘’dorm moms’’.

Barry Honan – Former Australian center, producer of groundbreaking innovations in computer analysis of performance and game patterns. Nigel Horton – Former England and British Lions second row, one of the world’s great scrum coaches. Laura Keates – Front row in the current England Women’s squad. Mark Nelson – Former Sale Sharks coach and now coach at Fylde.
Rob Purdham

Rob Purdham – Captain of England Rugby League. Captain of Harlequins Rugby League. Geoff Stalker – Former Rugby Lions, Birmingham/Solihull and Minnesota coach. Tamara Taylor – Back row in the current England Women’s squad and Rugby development officer at Worcester Warriors.
