sires of Rita Avila in “Machete”. From there he has played a wide array of roles any actor would be envious of. He has also starred opposite almost all the country’s top female actresses. He has been a “Warfreak”, a “Sanggano”, a “Hostage”, a “Kadre” and an “Utol”. He was in the Antipolo and the Lipa Massacre. He gave reel life to Governor Chavit Singson. All proving that he is a bankable action star who does his own stunts. He even has the scars for each movie to prove it. He also dabbled in comedy and television and had viewers laughing in their seats. He even tried his hand at directing. Each step he took was successful, he won accolades from theatergoers and his peers along the way. Cesar Montano soon became a multiaward winning actor for his roles in “Jose Rizal,” “Muro-Ami”, “Bagong Buwan” and others. According to Abaya, Cesar was a natural choice for the lead role in the movie recount-

enjamin Bratt calls him “My Brown Bro.” He also referred to him as the “Tom Cruise of the Philippines”. Ishmael Bernal once pointed out the then young actor to Marilou Diaz-Abaya and said, “Watch out for that guy.” The nation has since watched him both on TV and in the movies. Now, the whole world has the chance to watch him too. Nothing was ever given to Cesar Montano on a silver platter. Growing up in Sta. Ana, the young Cesar grew up watching Tagalog movies of Vic Silayan and Dolphy. Little did he know that decades later he himself would end up on the silver screen. He finished engineering at the Lyceum. But it was in 1984, his senior year, when the acting bug bit him. He soon found himself in different acting workshops. Cesar Montano caught the public eye with his early movies. He played a native statue which came to life to fulfill the innermost de-

ing the life of the national hero of the Philippines. She calls Cesar a “consummate actor”. He spent six months studying and researching for the role of Rizal based on the five-page syllabus Abaya gave him. He could have done a lot of other movies and earned a lot of money instead. But he didn’t. After doing Jose Rizal, Cesar realized that there were a lot more films he could do. He wanted to do very Filipino projects that would help promote Philippine culture to the younger generation. After Jose Rizal, Cesar worked with Abaya in Muro-Ami and Bagong Buwan. The tandem proves to be a good one. One of his latest ventures, as pro ducer, director and actor, was the ambitious “Panaghoy sa Suba”. Showcasing the charms of Loboc River in his hometown, the high-risk film utilized Bohol’s regional dialect and cost about PhP25 million. But it was worth it. Currently, Cesar Montano is appearing in “The Great Raid” with Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, Connie Nielsen and Joseph Fiennes. He plays Capt. Juan Pajota, a leader of filipino Guerilla forces. Cesar recalls that he lost about 10 pounds during the boot camp held for actors before the actual filming. So what’s next for Cesar? He has his mind set on recreating the Dagohoy rebellion and the Balangiga massacre on screen. That’s thinking out of the box for Philippine movies.

Remembering the Rescue Raid
American soldiers who clung to life in the infamous POW camp. In early 1945, the Japanese in the Philippines are faced with certain defeat against General Douglas “I Shall Return” McArthur’s U.S. Forces. Because of this, Tokyo issued a “Kill All” policy on the thousands of Allied prisoners of war held in Japanese concentration camps. Without mercy, they execute every captive G.I. when their defeat by approaching allied forces becomes inevitable. The pipe smoking, ray-ban wearing general sees this as an opportunity to undertake a theatrical, high-risk rescue mission. In typical McArthur fashion, the rescue raid is long on emotional value but has limited strategic or military value. Thankfully, however, the rescue mission was flawlessly executed by the U.S. Army’s Sixth Ranger Battalion led by Lt. Col. Henry Mucci and Captain Robert Prince. The Sixth Ranger Battalion at that time had yet to see combat duty and yet managed to infiltrate enemy lines and grappled with a retreating Japanese Army that possessed a vast superiority in numbers. Historians like Hampton Sides acknowledge, however, that the mission would not have been successful without the support of the local Filipino guerillas. The Filipino guerillas not only provided crucial intelligence on local terrain and the movement of Japanese troops, they also directly confronted the Japanese in a fierce gun battle allowing the Americans and the rescued POWs to escape with limited casualties. Robert Prince, one of the surviving assault commanders of the Cabanatuan raid, recalled the decisive role provided by the Filipinos: “The Cabanatuan raid was a success, and the POWS were rescued only because we were assisted by two Filipino guerrilla forces led by Capt. Juan Pajota and Capt. Eduardo Joson. Not only did the Filipino forces provide flank and rear guard protection, with the help of local villagers, they provided us with 50 carabao carts that allowed us to get the POWs back to safety. We couldn’t have done it without the help of the Filipino guerrillas and the support of local villagers of Nueva Ecija and for that the American people will be forever grateful.” It took 60 years to get this story told but it is nonetheless good to know that the heroism of Filipinos during WWII would be immortalized in Hollywood celluloid via “The Great Raid”.

hilippine cinema’s Cesar Montano is currently appearing in “The Great Raid” with Benjamin Bratt, James Franco, Connie Nielsen and Joseph Fiennes. The movie is based on two books, William Breuer’s “The Great Raid on Cabanatuan” and Hampton Sides’ “Ghost Soldiers”. Ghost Soldiers recount Japan’s initial military triumphs throughout Asia and the South Pacific and the subsequent emergency evacuation of Allied troops from Bataan in 1942. It also describes the horror faced by survivors of the hideous Bataan Death March as they struggled to stay alive in the POW camp at Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija. The highlight of the book, however, is the daring liberation of the 513 British and

he Great Raid, unfortunately, was not shot in the Philippines. It was shot on location in Australia where World War II Cabanatuan was replicated. However, several movies shot on location in the Philippines ended up achieving box office and critical success. Some even won Academy awards. We’ve listed these now “classic” movies as well as certain trivia associated with each. Apocalypse Now (1979) Based on Joseph Conrad’s book “Heart of Darkness”, this movie is a controversial addition to the multitude of Vietnam war movies in existence. The movie follows Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) on his mission into Cambodia to assassinate renegade Green Beret Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) who has set himself up as a God among a local tribe. Filming of this movie (mostly in Pagsanjan and Baguio) was extremely difficult with shooting extending well beyond schedule. The original six-week schedule ended up taking 16 months. A typhoon destroyed sets, causing a delay of several months. The film went way over budget, director Francis Ford Coppolla threatened to commit suicide and actor Sheen had a heart attack. The helicopters and pilots used for filming were supplied by the Marcos government and were also needed for fighting the NPA. As a result, the pilots and helicopters often had to go from filming to combat duty and vise versa. The Year of Living Dangerously (1983) Put together by acclaimed Australian

director Peter Weir, this movie featured a young Mel Gibson (Mad Max, Lethal Weapon, etc.) as a journalist in volatile Indonesia in the late1960’s. Then Indonesian dictator Suharto did not allow the film to be shot in Jakarta and as a result, film production had to be moved to Manila. Filipinos who watch this film will be surprised to find out that much of the non-English dialogue in the film is in Filipino, not Bahasa or Javanese. The supposedly Muslim prayers spoken in some of the scenes are, in fact, the “Ama Namin”. This movie also stars Filipino actors Bembol Roco and Kuh Ledesma in supporting roles.

Platoon (1986) Former Marine turned movie director Oliver Stone tells his personal story of how the Vietnam War transformed young poet and writer Chris Taylor (played by Charlie Sheen) into a soldier and a man. This movie, which was a major box office and critical success - Platoon grossed US$137 million and won the Oscar for Best Picture in 1986 - also served as a springboard for the film careers of actors Willem Dafoe, Tom Berenger, Johnny Depp, John C. McGinley, Forrest Whitaker, and (of course) director Oliver Stone. All the scenes were shot in Cavite and Pagsanjan. Trivia buffs would be interested to know that filming for this movie was scheduled to begin Febru-

ary 1986 but was delayed by the EDSA Revolution. “I woke up and there were tanks outside my hotel room,” related Willem Dafoe. Born on the Fourth of July (1989) Oliver Stone’s semisequel to Platoon, the movie starred Tom Cruise as Ron Kovic, a real life Vietnam veteran who spoke out against the war after coming home. Director Stone wanted to tell movie-goers that “there was another war waiting for Vietnam vets when they got home”. Kovic, who was full of patriotism before going to Vietnam, became cynical about the war and America in general after his experiences in South East Asia. The war scenes were shot in Laoag and Vigan in Ilocos Norte. The scene in which Kovic’s platoon was ambushed (and Kovic was paralyzed) was shot in the sand dunes of Fort Ilocandia, just a few minutes away from the resort hotel. The movie earned an Oscar for Best Director for Oliver Stone.

Make sure that you have the name and address of your hotel written down in a notebook, PDA or even cellphone for easy access. Once you are at the hotel, proceed to the concierge or information desk, or checkin counter so that you may be able to drop off your stuff in your room. Then the fun begins. When I first traveled all I needed were my sneakers and two feet. After depositing all my stuff inside my room, I then went strolling, city map in hand. First, I looked for the visitor’s center. There I got all the maps, interesting places to visit and landmarks that I needed or wanted to experience for my stay. I also looked for grocery stores, bakeries, convenience stores where I could buy cheaper food. Rather than ordering hotel food, I chose to save by buying outside. Instead of taking the cab or taxi, I looked for the bus station. Here, I found other maps and bus routes that tumawag sa tel.no. 926-7129.

Philippine Embassy officials in Baghdad have temporarily relocated to Amman in nearby Jordan. This after a series of bombings and abductions of diplomats in Iraq. Though temporary, the transfer will be for an indefinite period of time, according to Philippine Foreign Undersecretary Jose Brillantes. It was not clear if all of the embassy’s Filipino staff have relocated. “We continue to maintain our diplomatic ties with Iraq. The embassy in Baghdad remains open and the diplomats in Baghdad are in Amman for security reasons occasioned by the recent kidnappings of diplomats,” Brillantes said. After the abductions of Robert Tarongoy and Angelo de la Cruz, the Philippine government banned the deployment of Filipino workers to Iraq. The ban is still in effect, according to Brillantes. At present, are between 6,000 and 7,000 Filipino workers in Iraq, mostly as cooks and maintenance personnel in US military camps. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that the Saudi police do not require overseas Filipino workers to secure a clearance from them before they’re allowed to return to the Philippines. What Is Financial Planning? • F

Know your financial position. How much income do you receive and how much to you spend? Do you have any savings, loans, other investments? If you have more liabilities than assets, you will have to make extreme adjustments in the way you plan your finances. If your savings, investments and other assets are greater than your debts, you are on the right track, but always with room for improvement. Then, match this reality with your objectives - are they still reasonable or do you have to be more practical? After answering the two basic FP questions of “Where are you financially?” and “Where do you want to go?”, you can now review your investment options. This will help you choose the instruments in order to reach your financial goals. Savings deposits, life insurance, mutual funds, pre-need contracts, money market placements, and many other vehicles are there to build your “investment basket” or portfolio.

MONEY-WISE ADVICE
FP is not just for the rich, it is everyone’s responsibility. Planning helps you make smarter decisions and provides peace of mind from the stability of your financial position. Kung single ka, go!
Explore the world! Iba ‘yong independence mo doon. Iba na ako ngayon. Iba na ang thinking ko. Iba na ang ideas ko. At saka magiging tough ka. Wala kang kakampi. You have friends pero dapat maging selfreliant ka. You have to take care of yourself.
eny Diaz is a BSE graduate of St. Paul College of Manila, major in Mathematics. She spent 10 years teaching in an exclusive school in Parañaque before accepting an offer to teach in an international school in Mozambique, Africa. Kahit saan, basta abroad. Iyong idea ko ng Africa, backward talaga. Gubat… Brown na brown ang makikita mo. Pero noong pagdating, maganda pala siya. Parang Pilipinas lang. Teaching in an International School Thrice as much ang salary compared sa pinanggalingan ko. Lahat ng subject, discussion is English. Kaya lang, natuto ako unti-unti ng Portugese. Kasi, hindi lahat ng bata, marunong. And then you have to ask mga locals. Iyong mga bata namin, expat din. Kung local sila, big time yan. At first, mahirap. 10 students, parang ang katumbas is 50. Lahat ng strategies, you have to try. Wild talaga sila. They relate to you as a friend, not as a teacher. Pero nandon iyong respect. Mostly Pinoy teachers kami pero may other nationalities. May taga-Ghana, India, Iranian, Canadian pa akong nakasama. Mas madaling makipag-deal sa kanila. You can say anything you want. Life in Mozambique Sa weather, extreme. Mas mainit doon pero nagha-hail. Weekends, we walk along the beach. Mga foreigners nagpupunta. Libre. Pinaliliguan pa talaga. Meron kaming maid. We have separate allowance for that. Siya ang magluluto, maglalaba, plantsa. Ang tawag talaga sa amin is señora. anytime, you can. Dito, ang layo. Pero meron kaming Fil-community. May activities at least once a month or kung may birthday-birthday. Most Memorable Experiences My first year, wala akong ipon kasi punta kami ng Europe. Hindi ganon kalaki ang sweldo namin but the experience is worth it.

Conquering

One year behind or more ang sine nila. Pero iyong movie house, maganda. Iyong shopping mall, don’t expect something that elegant. Tapos iyong market, parang Quiapo or Divisoria. Dollar. So iyong coke between 3,000-5,000. Ang burger is 10,000. Although most of them are Muslims, may nabibiling pork kasi open city. Banana. Pinya. Papaya. Cassava. May rice din. May gulay. Sa ulam, wala ring difference. Wala lang bangus. Iyong galunggong, iba hitsura pero meron sila. What I like most, crabs. For 10 years, nagbo-board ako. So adjusted ako. Pero hindi pala. Iyong ika-3rd month, may ginagawa ako sa salas, biglang tumulo luha ko. Pag nasa Pilipinas kasi, kahit nasa boardinghouse ka, if you want to go home,

Advice Kung single ka, go! Explore the world! Iba ‘yong independence mo doon. Iba na ako ngayon. Iba na ang thinking ko. Iba na ang ideas ko. At saka magiging tough ka. Wala kang kakampi. You have friends pero dapat maging self-reliant ka. You have to take care of yourself. Have enough sleep. Wala kang resistensiya. Doon ako naging stronger. I had to learn to stand on my own. Parang iisipin mo, kakayanin mo ba? Parang ang hirap sa umpisa. Pero you can. It helps a lot kapag gusto mo ang gagawin mo. Tapos, i-assure mo iyong sarili mo na kaya mo ‘to. Kaya mo ‘to.

NU/HART- A world leader in hair transplants opens in Manila
u/Hart, the world leader in hair transplantation, recently opened its first center in the Philippines to meet the growing demand from men and women in the Philippines who are concerned about their hair loss. Hair transplantation is a simple, officebased clinical procedure that takes hair from the back and sides of the head and transplants them to the thinning and balding areas. This hair continues to grow because it is genetically different from the hair that has been shed from the front hairline and crown areas of the head. Hair transplantation is a safe, natural, permanent and affordable solution to hair loss. Unlike wigs and hair-pieces which are cumbersome to maintain, it does not require monthly maintenance, ongoing visits and periodic expenditures. Nu/Hart has performed over 25,000 hair restoration procedures on clients from over 40 countries and has been established for 15 years. With ten centers in the U.S. and overseas supported by a dedicated team of U.S.trained hair transplant surgeons, Nu/Hart offers the expertise, knowledge and the most advanced technology to meet the individual needs of each of its clients. Commenting on the opening, Kathy Smith, President of Nu/Hart said, “We are very excited about opening our center in the Philippines. It is an investment in line with Nu/Hart’s corporate policy of continuously expanding our operations worldwide to strengthen our leadership position and making our services available to everyone across the globe.”

N

Mac Fadra, Executive Director of Nu/ Hart stated, “Hair transplantation is often perceived as a painful procedure because of ignorance and lack of understanding of the treatment. However, it is a fairly simple procedure involving only one or two sessions, and is relatively painless.” The hair transplant procedure begins with a mild anesthesia to minimize any discomfort and during the procedure itself, the client can sit back, relax and watch TV, talk to the doctors and staff, make phone calls and/or listen to music without feeling much discomfort. Nu/Hart’s physicians have been in the field of hair transplantation for over two decades and their experience, dedication and strict code of ethics have greatly contributed to the success and growth of Nu/Hart worldwide. Personal appearances can make a lasting impression about one’s personality and in today’s competitive environment where looks can play a key role in one’s social and personal life, hair loss has become a common cause of concern. With Nu/Hart’s hair transplant experts, the most efficient and effective solution for hair loss is now available in the Philippines. The Nu/Hart clinic is centrally located at the Wynsum Corporate Plaza on F. Ortigas Jr. Road (formerly Emerald Ave.) in Ortigas and is open from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm from Monday to Friday and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday. To schedule a FREE evaluation or to request further information, call 638-6000. You can also visit Nu/Hart’s web- site at www.nuhart.com or e-mail them at manila@nuhartme.com

The living and dining area, bedroom, kitchen and toilet/bath are all on one floor. The landscaped entrance can be used as a carport or a play area for children. Like Casa Montecilla in Sunrise Hills’ soldout first phase, Roseville, Isabella features units that can be customized according to the homeowner’s changing needs. With the addition of a mezzanine with a stairway, each home can easily accommodate an extra bedroom. Isabella also showcases Suntrust’s energysaving technology: built-in roof insulation and concrete-and-steel wall panels that have an insulating polystyrene layer. hilippine Veterans Bank (PVB) reported a net consolidated income of PhP166.15 million in the first half of 2005, representing a 54.7% increase on a year-on-year basis with last year’s 1st half net income at PhP107.39 million. PVB total assets stood at PhP21 billion as of the same period. Total capital accounts meanwhile stood at PhP3.99 billion, PVB’s capital adequacy ratio, a measure of banks to shoulder risks, still remained at a high 33%. The BSP minimum capital adequacy ratio is 10%. PVB President and CEO Ricardo A. Balbido, Jr. attributed the increase in net income to earnings from both corporate and retail loans, portfolio investments, higher gains from securities trading and higher fee-based transactions. He said that the bank’s first semester performance and figures were “on target, despite the prevailing slow pace of business and investments.” Balbido said he was optimistic that the bank will likely meet its annual net income target of PhP300M by year-end. Last year, PVB posted a net income of PhP260 million. PVB increased deposits accounted for the rise in total resources. PVB deposits were reported at PhP15.75 billion, an increase of 34.69% from PhP11.56 billion at 2004 yearend. Low-cost or current and savings accounts were maintained at 48.9% of total deposits.

P

PVB 1st Half Net Income hits P166-million
PVB is a private, commercial bank with 44 branches nationwide catering to both private and government markets. PVB is still looking at expanding its branch network. PVB recently inaugurated its Imus, Cavite branch last Monday, August 1, 2005. Said branch came from its recent merger with its subsidiary, Teachers Development Bank where PVB would be the surviving entity. The merger was approved by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Philippine Veterans Bank is owned by some 300,000 World War II veterans and their compulsory heirs. Led by PVB Chairman Emmanuel V. de Ocampo, the bank provides 20% of its net income each year for programs and projects that benefit the veterans, their widows and families. De Ocampo said that the Bank’s continued growth in size and assets continue to reflect the bank’s conservative banking stance and administration. “We have to remember that the bank is owned by some 300,000 World War II veterans and their families. We are accountable to them.” Says De Ocampo. For any inquiries or clarifications, please call: Mike Villareal, Asst. Vice President, Corporate Communications Dept. Tel 7518578; Fax 7518577.

Do You Need Insurance?
f you own things that will be very hard to replace without facing severe financial hardship, these things ought to be insured. In general, think of insurance as “hardship avoidance,” not “convenience” or “hitting the jackpot.” When determining whether or not to buy insurance, just remember the following basic points: 1. Insurance has only one purpose. To protect against a financial loss. Financial losses may occur if you die, are injured, become sick, if your property is damaged, destroyed, or stolen, or if you get sued. The key word is “financial” since it is impossible to protect against the losses themselves. Thus, insurance protects us from the negative financial impact caused by a loss. If there is no financial loss, there is no need to protect against it through insurance. 2. Insurance works on the basis of “risk transference”. The policyholder pays the insurance company to take on the risk of financial loss associated with the occurrence of an unwanted event. 3. Keep in mind that insurance companies make money by selling to people who do not need it: they want you to buy insurance but never file a claim. And to help them maintain profitability, the insurance industry has learned over many years of experience that consumers fall into one of two broad groups: those who file claims and those who don’t. This is why it is important to determine your needs prior to buying insurance. You don’t want to make premium payments for a service you do not need. If you do decide to buy insurance, however, always purchase it from a reputable company. There is nothing worse than making those premium payments over time and then finding out that the company you made a deal with is unable to fulfill its end of the bargain.

Bancnet and Expressnet Interconnect
Memorandum Of Agreement (MOA) signing between BancNet and Expressnet was held last 13 July 2005 at the Dusit Hotel in Ayala Center, Makati City. Aptly titled “Interconnection,” the morning affair marked the official agreement of the two ATM consortiums to an inter-network connection. Speaking at the event were Mr. Arnulfo R. Montinola, President of the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) and Chairman of Expressnet;

A

I

and Mr. Angelito M. Villanueva, Chairman of BancNet, Inc. Mr. Montinola, in his speech, shared that the “Interconnection of these two ATM Consortiums will allow the more than 16.4 Million ATM Cardholders access to 6,000 ATMs nationwide.” He asserts that “the Interconnection of Expressnet and BancNet is truly an opportune response to the growing business of ATM Banking” that will allow BancNet and Expressnet to “go beyond greater bounds, and

transcend larger limits.” He expects that “this convergence will uphold the two networks’ commitment to excellence and quality, and will create an even more powerful connection.” Mr. Villanueva also expressed his affirmation toward the internetwork connection, stating, “BancNet’s interconnection with Expressnet signals the beginning of heightened convenience across all cardholders of the three networks.” He further affirmed that “The in-

terconnection is consistent with BancNet’s advocacy for a shared network infrastructure built around the principles of resource sharing and economies of scale.” The event was hosted by Ms. Veronica Tapia-Merk, BPI Corporate Communications Vice President. Also present at the event were Mr. Ricardo R. Chua, Vice Chairam of bancNet, Inc.; Ms. Ysabel P. Sylianteng, and Ms. Teresita B. Tan, Senior Vice-Predient of the Philippine Islands.

The Crystal Voice of Asia
“Actually, it’s so good. Even though, busy ako pero naiintindihan niya. Saka kung wala naman akong kanta, lahat ng time nasa sa kanya, ako talaga ang nag-aasikaso, pati ang pagtu-tutor. “Mas happy ako ngayon, kasi mas naienjoy ko ang life ko ngayon. Dati kasi, I was working but I’m not seeing them ‘cause I’m not with them. “But right now, magkakasama na kami, dito na kami nag-I-stay sa Manila,” sabi pa niya. Sa nilalaman ng kanyang newest album, anong song ang pinaka-favorite niya? “’Yun ‘Sa Piling Mo’, para sa husband ko. Ang tunay na pagmamahal kasi, hindi lang sa pisikal na palagi kang kasama. “But it’s the support and wellingness to give up anything just for you. Kaya I’m so happy, hindi lang sa career ko, pati sa family ko.” Nangangarap na ba siya na magkaroon ng big solo concert in the future? “Hindi ko pa alam kung ano ang plano ng Star Records. But if given, I will really accept it.

S

“Well, I do my best as a mom,” mabilis niyang sagot. “I do my best in singing and I do best in loving. I’m very much in love right now, especially with my family and my career. “I do my best, dahil ‘yun ang gusto ng tao. But right now, I’m not proving na ako talaga ang best. Ang sa akin lang, kakantahin ko ‘yung songs na talagang nasa puso ko. “Kasi I really love singing. I gave up teaching because of singing.” After two years, sikat na sikat na si Sheryn, hindi lang sa buong bansa pati na rin sa ibang parte ng mundo na kung saan nakapag-concert na siya kasama ang iba pang ‘champions’. Kaya nararapat na bigyan na siya ng titulo at siya na nga ang tinaguriang ‘The Crystal Voice of Asia’.

ROMANCE

No Time for Love
“Good Evening, Mr. Zuniga. Are you sure you’re in this class?”

N

• A NOVEL • HEART & SOUL
“Mukhang hindi ninyo sineseryoso ang seminar na ito,” dagdag ni Tammy, “How about a test on the assignment I gave you.” “Please submit your reaction papers with your test papers,” aniya, “Then you may leave the classroom as soon as you’re finished with the test.” “I’m about to leave. You may want to submit your papers now,” ani Tammy, “Other-

by Cristina Carlos wise, I’ll see you tomorrow.” “Look, you don’t have to say you’re sorry,” sagot niya, “Hindi ito iyong usual na eskwela. “Yeah, right,” sagot nito habang papalayo sa kausap, “See you, Sean.” “ See you.” Itutuloy

“Miss, wala akong nililigawan dito,” pahayag niya habang ang buong klase ay nanood ng pagpapalitan ng sagot ng dalawa. “Ako, Sean pwede,” ani Catsup na sumali sa usapan, “Di ba, Miss, bagay kami?” “Bahala kayo,” sambit ni Tammy, “Let’s get back to what we were discussing before we were distracted. Mr. Zuniga, since you’re late, what do you think are the objectives of business?” “Miss?” “Yes?” “Para kumita syempre,” sagot ni Sean na tatayo sana kung hindi lang pinigilan ng katabing si Dilbert. “Ano pa?” “Para sumikat.” “Iyon lang ba? How about an advocacy?” “Miss ako ulit?” “Yes.” “I don’t know what you mean.”

• Her son is named Jordan, after Michael
Jordan. She is the first women’s basketball player to have a Nike shoe named after her: the “Air Swoopes.” • Swoopes is one of four WNBA players to win an Olympic gold medal, an NCAA championship and a WNBA championship. • She currently has notched 2,000 career points, 500 career rebounds, 300 career assists and 200 career steals. • Swoopes has been named to the AllWNBA First Team four times (1998, 1999, 2000, 2002). • She has recorded five 30-point games and 10 double-doubles so far in her career.

heryl Denise Swoopes was born on the 25th of March, 1971 in Brownfield, Texas. Currently playing with the Houston Comets, she is considered to be one of the best female basketball players of all time and is among the most decorated female athletes in recent history. Sheryl first gained the public’s attention when she led her college’s women’s basketball team to a national title in 1993. This was her senior year and the following year saw Texas Tech retiring her jersey. In 1996, she was part of the US women’s basketball team which won the gold medal during the Summer Olympics. That same year, the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) was inaugurated. Swoopes was one of the pioneering players and she was assigned to play with the Houston Comets. However, she missed the WNBA’s inaugural season due to her pregnancy. Nevertheless, her team went on to win the championship. What, arguably, is her best season came in 2000. She rejoined the US women’s basketball team to win their second straight Olympic gold medal. At the same time, she was lauded her first WNBA Most Valuable Player Award as well as the WNBA Defensive Player of the Year Award. All this while leading the Comets to their fourth straight consecutive championship. After this stellar performance, injuries seemed to come just as much as the achievements did. In 2002, she again was

S

awarded the MVP and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Then in the following year, she got her third Defensive Player of the Year Award. 2004 saw her winning another Olympic gold medal with the women’s basketball team but nagging injuries forced Swoopes to contemplate retirement after the 2004 WNBA season.

Despite these obstacles, this year saw her returning to the WNBA hard court. She even won the All-Star Game MVP award. This season, she is ranked number 2 in the league in points per game and steals per game, number 9 in assists and free throws converted, and number 1 in field goals made.
