This number represents your Humanity level. Humanity is a consumable resource and also a measure of your presence in the world. Killing bosses may raise Humanity, but you can also find consumable versions to sacrifice for health and to reverse Hollowing, if needed.
After opening the start menu, choose to view your inventory, check equipment, review your stars, or enter the System menu. When this menu is open,. you are still vulnerable to enemies even if you cannot attack.

Your current HP level is displayed in the upper left. As you incur damage, the gauge depletes, and when it is empty, you die.
This icon displays your currently equipped weapons, armor, magic, and items.
This gauge displays how much a certain resistance has been affected.
Your current stamina level is displayed under your HP gauge. Stamina depletes with each evade and/or action taken. However, stamina recovers over time.
The counter in the lower right displays the number of souls you have.
When you are afflicted with a status effect, such as poison, an icon is displayed. 07
Bonfires are the beginning and end of the Dark Souls experience, and the linchpin on which all manner of upgrades are carried out Lighting a bonfire for the first time will ignite it, creating a checkpoint foryou to return to upon death. Lighting a new bonfire movesthe checkpoint there, and it also refills your Estus Flask and spells. Ifyou have reversedyour Hollowing and have become flesh and blood again, you can also spend another point of Humanity to kindle the bonfire once (eventually the rite of kindling, found later in the game, will allow further kindling) ..When a bonfire is kindled, the capacity of your Estus Flask is doubled, allowing return trips to the fire to bestow a much-needed 10healing portions instead of the usual five.
Magic in Dark Souls comes in three varieties: Pyromancers wield flame, Sorcerers cast spells, and Clerics use miracles, though magic isn't restricted to any one Class. Each of the three varieties needs a means of evoking the effects of the spell: Pyromancers have-a Fire Catalyst, Sorcerers use a wand-like Catalyst, and miracles are cast with the help of a Talisman. More powerful versions of these basic tools can make spells more effective and also function as limited melee weapons in some cases.
Weapons are separated into specific types (piercing, slashing, etc.), which in turn have different effects on the various enemies in the world. Some armor resists certain types of damage while being vulnerable to others. Melee-based players would do well to have multiple options for attacking enemies, 09

To the left of the sitting knight is a set of stairs leading down to a lower landing where you'll discover a quiet maiden locked behind She is the keeper who tends the bonfire above at aU times. had her tongue cut out long ago, and thus cannot speak, but if you come across Fire Keeper Souls, take them here to boost the restorative power of the Estus Flask. Another set of stairs leads to a platform, which can be lowered to reach New Londo Ruins, an almost dream-like, dilapidated set of ruins. To the right of the landing with the wailing, hollowed creatures is a staircase that leads down to the water and a smith who can modify, reinforce, and repair certain equipment. The smith also sells magic \ items for a premium. Magic users would do well to remember this, as .r spells are in fairly short supply. Keep in mind that unless you already have one, a Catalyst will have to be purchased to use the Soul Arrow spells here, but they are extremely useful-particularly the Great Soul Arrow, which is quite pricey but worth the cost. Following the stairs back up to the landing, you can see an open archway in a tower. Inside, more stairs lead up to a locked door. The Valley of Drakes beyond the door leads to Blighttown. However, the enemies here have attacks that contain poison, so it's best to level up first before attempting to conquer this route. To the left of the landing is yet another path. Venturing across the wooden planks in the distance leads to encounters with ghostly apparitions that cannot be attacked unless under the influence of the Transient Curse. The corpse near the entrance to the wooden planks provides this curse.
