September 19, 2011 Chief Justice Michael Bender, Ex Officio Chair Colorado Supreme Court Judicial Nominating Commission 101 W. Colfax Ave., Suite 800 Denver, CO 80202 Dear Chief Justice Bender and Members of the Judicial Nominating Commission, I am writing in support of Patrick T. O'Rourke's nomination to the Colorado State Supreme Court. I have known and worked with Patrick for more than three years and have found him to be an outstanding attorney and an individual of the highest integrity. While relatively young, he has the first-rate skills, experience and judgment to make him an excellent member of the judiciary. Patrick is one of the best attorneys at the University of Colorado. His diligence, knowledge of the law, instincts and intelligence have made him a critical part of our legal team, one invariably called upon to work the university's most significant cases. In leading our Litigation Department, he has successfully defended CU in cases ranging from the Ward Churchill First Amendment litigation to the Students for Concealed Carry lawsuit (both under appeal). He also was our lead attorney on the Lisa Simpson Title IX case and led our work toward a settlement. Additionally, he has successfully defended CU in medical malpractice cases and others important to our university. His output is prodigious, and he brings the same stellar work ethic to all he does. When Patrick works a case, I have every confidence that our preparation, strategy and courtroom conduct will be second to none. He not only has defended the university in high-profile cases, but also done so with a dignity and integrity that represents the university in exemplary fashion. Despite working cases with often-substantial media and public attention, his professional demeanor and personal conduct always reflect well on our institution.

Patrick's legal skills are considerable but in addition, he is of sound character. He is involved in his community, active in a variety of legal volunteer work and a contributor to the educational enterprise at CU (by teaching at our School of Law, the College of Public Health, and in programs at the School of Medicine). Most importantly, he is a family man dedicated to his wife and children. He has found an admirable balance in his life and work. I can recommend Patrick wholeheartedly and without reservation. He is a man of the utmost honesty and integrity. He is an excellent lawyer with a keen understanding of the law and judicial process. He also has a deep regard for Colorado, where he was raised and immediately returned after completing his studies at the Georgetown University law Center. I believe he would be an asset to the courts and to our state. Patrick has demonstrated in his work and his life that he has the capacity to enhance all he is involved with. I am certain he would bring that same quality to the Colorado Supreme Court. Thank you for your consideration.
