THE DETERMINATION OF SLURRY DENSITY BASED ON THE VOLUME AND WEIGHT CONCENTRATION OF THE SOLID PARTICLES

C2

APPENDIX C

APPENDIX C THE DETERMINATION OF SLURRY DENSITY BASED ON THE VOLUME AND WEIGHT CONCENTRATION OF THE SOLID PARTICLES This section explains how the specific gravity of a slurry (SGM) is related to the solid's particle weight and volume concentration.

Definitions

Figure C-1 Variables related to the calculation of the specific gravity of a slurry.

VM : volume the slurry mixture MM : mass of the slurry mixture VL : volume of the liquid portion of the mixture ML : mass of the liquid portion of the mixture VS : volume of the solid portion of the mixture MS : mass of the solid portion of the mixture CV : concentration by volume of the solid particles in the mixture or the ratio of the volume of the solids to the total mixture volume CW : concentration by weight of the solid particles in the mixture or the ratio of the weight of the solids to the total mixture weight SGS : specific gravity of the solids portion of the mixture SGL : specific gravity of the liquid portion of the mixture SGM : specific gravity of the mixture S : specific gravity of the solids portion of the mixture L : specific gravity of the liquid portion of the mixture M : specific gravity of the mixture WA : specific gravity of water at standard conditions M : mass flow rate q : volumetric flow rate The mass of the solid particles (MS) is:

APPENDIX C

C3

M S = S VS

and the solids density S can be expressed as a specific gravity. Specific gravity is a ratio of the density of the substance to the density of water at standard conditions wa :

= SGS

S

WA

By definition Cw = MS/MM The volume of the mixture can be expressed as the sum of the solids volume and the carrying liquid volume:

VT =

CW M M

(1 CW ) M M

M =

CW

1 (1 CW )

[C-1]

It is often easier to use the specific gravity (SG) of the substance instead of the density. Since S = SGS x WA , M = SGM x WA and L = SGL x WA then

SGM =

1 CW (1 CW ) + SGS SGL

Similarly the weight of the mixture can be expressed as the sum of the solids weight and the carrying liquid weight:

M M = CV VM S + (1 CV )VM L

If we divide both sides of the equation by VM we obtain:

M = CV ( S L ) + L

and expressed in terms of specific gravity:

[C-2]

C4

APPENDIX C

We can establish a relationship between CV and CW without using the specific gravity of the mixture SGM. Notice that the right hand sides of equations C-1 and C-2 are equal, therefore:

CV ( S L ) + L =

CW

1 (1 CW )

and expressed in terms of specific gravity and If the liquid is water with L/WA = 1 then the above simplifies to:

CV ( SGS 1) +1=

1 CW (1 CW ) + 1 SGS

1 1 1 CV = CW (1 CW ) ( SG S 1) + 1 SG S

1 1 CV = 1 ( SGS 1) 1 CW ( SG 1) + 1 S

By definition CV = VS/VM and VS = CW x MM / S Therefore by substitution

[C-3]

CV =

or

CW M

CW SGM SGS

SGM =

CV SGS CW

[C-4]

which means that there is a direct relationship between the specific gravity of the mixture SGM and CV and CW if you know the density of the solids.

APPENDIX C

C5

Usually the concentration by volume (CV), the concentration by weight (CW) and the specific gravity (SGS) of the solid particles will be given or known for a particular slurry. This is enough information to calculate the specific gravity of the slurry (SGM) using equation [C-3]. Often the purpose of the slurry mixture is to pump solid particles in a fluid form to a discharge point at a distance. In that case, we are mainly interested in the amount of tons per hour of solids that are transported. The mass flow rate is given by:

M = S CV q

= SGS WA CV

The density of water at standard condition is 62.34 lbm/ft3 using the appropriate units to obtain Imperial tons per hour (2000 lb/h):
