HALLOWEEN HORROR
MASTER CARPENTER
RETURNS
By Jeff McGinnis
Toledo Free Press Staff Writer
For many horror fans, Halloween
wouldnt be the same without the
works of John Carpenter to keep
them company.
The inuential director helped sire
the modern slasher genre with
his seminal 1978 horror classic
Halloween. He also continued
to bring his wonderfully twisted
cinematic vision to the screen in the
two decades that followed.
From The Thing, Escape from
New York, Big Trouble in Little
China, They Live and on and on
Carpenters work commands a
huge cult following and much of it can
be described as being denitively
ahead of its time.
Then, in 2001, he stopped.
Following the release of his sci-
feature Ghosts of Mars, Carpenter,
who had been one of the most
prolic and consistent directors in
Hollywood, dropped off the map. He
wouldnt direct a feature lm again
for nearly 10 years, until the recent
release of The Ward, a lm about
a haunted mental hospital.
Why the decade of delay?
I was burned out. Toasted.
Exhausted, Carpenter said. Id
been working steadily since the
1970s. I needed a break. The Ward
was the rst movie ready to go when
I decided to go back to work.
He said the new lms structure
intrigued him.
My experience working with an
ensemble cast was the biggest
attraction to this little ghost story.
Every day I spend on the set I
learn something. The talented
actresses, the advances in digital
technology, the challenges of low-
budget lmmaking ... every aspect
of directing The Ward gave me
enormous satisfaction, Carpenter
said.
During his career, Carpenter has
worked with numerous young actors
who would go on to bigger stardom
Jamie Lee Curtis, a post-Disney
Kurt Russell and The Wards
casting of Amber Heard, who with
roles in Drive Angry and The
Rum Diary seems poised to break
through to the next level, falls right
in line with that trend.
Amber is very beautiful and very
talented. Like everyone else in the
movie business, she has to deal with
whats offered. Its a treacherous
business and I think shes navigating
the storms quite well, Carpenter
said.
Storms do not exempt Carpenter
from their wrath, however.
Entertainments ever-changing
business model is always looking
for the next big thing, often at the
expense of the legends who came
before. Now, as streaming video
begins to reign, the options for
lmmakers are becoming more
limited even for Carpenter.
These days, the DVD market has
shrunk from what it was, Carpenter
said. Downloading movies from the
Internet has shaken the traditions
of the movie business. Its getting
harder out there.
Another facet of entertainment is
its desire to cash in on valuable
franchises. Such is the case with
one of Carpenters most popular
lms his 1982 horror opus The
Thing, about a group of researchers
in Antarctica who face an alien entity
which can imitate other living forms.
On Oct. 14, a new version of The
Thing was released, ostensibly
a prequel to Carpenters version,
though he said he had no input
into the new lm.
I thought the idea of the Norwegian
camp was interesting, Carpenter
said of the new lms setting. I wish
the lmmakers well and hope their
version of The Thing is a success.
Carpenters Thing rst received
a cool reception from critics and
audiences, though as time passed
the 1982 lm garnered a cult following
and has become recognized as a
genre classic.
The hopelessness of the situation
in The Thing was evident in the
story, Carpenter said of his lms
bleak, unforgiving tone. Other
stories provoke different emotions
and ambience. There are really
no general rules about horror. It all
depends on the story.
He rejected the suggestion that on-
camera, practical effects, such as
the ones used in his 1982 lm, are
more convincing than digital ones.
Used correctly, digital effects
are most powerful and a major
breakthrough in special effects.
I think of the dinosaur charge
across the valley in Jurassic Park.
Breathtaking, Carpenter said.
As for Carpenter, it appears fans
wont have to wait another decade
to see another work by one of the
true masters of the macabre.
I have projects Im developing,
Carpenter said when asked what
was next for him. And Im in
mourning for the NBA season that
wont be.
Asked if he had any advice for
young lmmakers, Carpenter kept
his words short and true.
Steel your spine and dig in for the
long haul. Dont give up.

in London and Edinburgh, I was
approached by several publishers to
write a book on horror lms, Landis
said. I was separately approached
by Lauretta Dives of the Kobal
Collection, the largest collection of
lm stills in the world, and thought of
this book. Monsters appear not only
in the horror genre, but in science
ction, fantasy and suspense, and it
is a much broader subject than just
horror.
The 320-page book is separated
into categories based on type of
monster. It features photographs
from the Kobal Collection as well
as interviews with those involved
with monster movies, such as Sam
Raimi, Guillermo Del Toro and
Rick Baker. Baker won an Oscar in
makeup design for his work on An
American Werewolf in London. The
transformation of the main character
from man to werewolf was done
without the use of CGI. Their work
landed Landis and Baker the job of
creating Michael Jacksons Thriller
music video, and Landis later
embraced CGI when he directed
the video for Jacksons Black or
White.
Computer-generated imagery is just
another tool in the lmmakers box,
Landis said. From the earliest cave
paintings to the most sophisticated
CGI, humans still feel the need to
paint monsters.
He enjoys using CGI, but Landis was
happy to have made An American
Werewolf in London before the
technology was readily available.
Its a different time, and so many
lms later it would be received
differently by a contemporary
audience, Landis said.
Its only natural for Landis to
chronicle the evolution of monsters
since his favorites range from giant
gorillas to reanimated corpses.
I have many favorites when it
comes to monsters and all for
different reasons, Landis said.
As [Gremlins director] Joe Dante
points out in the book, monsters
are metaphors. Joe suggests a
game; name the monster, name
the metaphor! A few of my favorite
monster movies are Frankenstein,
Island of Lost Souls, King Kong,
The Exorcist, Rosemarys Baby,
The Re-Animator, Jason and the
Argonauts, The Monster and The
Girl and Mighty Joe Young and so
many more.

EVARTS DOWNTOWN
DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY
BOARD ACCUSED OF
VIOLATING OMA
By Jim Crees
Osceola Edition Editor
Evarts Downtown Development
Authority board is being held to
task for allegedly holding meetings
that one city resident claims should
have been posted and open to the
public.
Roger Elkins, a long-time Evart
resident, recently led a letter
with the ofce of Osceola County
prosecutor James Sims, alleging
that the DDA board met on at least
three occasions without proper
public notication that meetings
had been called.
DDA board chair Alan Bengry said
the complaint is unfounded.
In his letter Elkins noted to Sims:
Please be advised the Evart
DDA meetings of October 13 and
October 19 appear to be in violation
of the Open Meetings Act.
October 13 was a special
board meeting for the purpose
of interviewing DDA Director
candidates and hearing a
presentation from Wade Trim for an
infrastructure grant.
A special meeting would need
a posting of the meeting and the
purpose.
A notice of a special meeting was
not posted at the DDA ofce ...
Elkins claims the meeting was
not posted at any other municipal
facility.
He then noted he believed a meeting
held Oct. 4 was also in violation of
the law.
While hesitant to comment on the
complaint since it is still under
investigation, Bengry said Elkins
allegations were unjustied.
There was notice posted for the
Oct. 13 meeting, he reported.
The meeting of Oct. 19 is our
regular meeting, and that has been
posted publicly since the beginning
of the June as part of our regular
calendar.
Further in his complaint, Elkins
pointed out that four members
of the DDA had earlier met to
consider which of the DDA director
candidates to interview.
As a board there were no other
written comments of suggestions
from any of you, he wrote. In
essence this became a selection for
interviews by four board members
and not the entire board.
With a committee making a decision
for the entire board this may be a
violation of the Open Meetings Act.
The meeting was held without any
public notice.
Bengry disputed Elkins claims. On
Oct. 4, a committee met to discuss
the selection process, Bengry said,
but it was not a majority of board
members - four of nine members
- and it did not demand a posting
since no decisions were made or
action taken. It was not planned as
an meeting at which action would
be taken.
The entire board has offered input
in the selection process of a new
DDA director, he said.
Following his ling of a complaint
with the prosecutor, Elkins reported
he had checked numerous times
in advance of the interviews to
see when and where the meetings
would take place.
At no time, he pointed out, could he
nd notice of a public meeting to be
held by the DDA.
Ive been told there were notices,
but I would like to see a copy of this
meeting announcement, Elkins
said. I dont know that anyone
tried to circumvent the process or
do anything under the table, but in
my opinion, someone needs to be
aware of what the Open Meetings
Act requires and to make sure
the DDA is in compliance with this
law.
Elkins noted there he felt there
were general irregularities with the
selection process that were simply
highlighted by the alleged Open
Meetings Act violations.
I sometimes feel the DDA is running
roughshod over the people in their
own community, he said. I wonder
if there was a legitimate mistake
here? Or what?
Elkins is an elected representative on
the county Board of Commissioners
from the Evart-area district. He
also was a candidate for the DDA
directors job that was posted.
Prosecuting attorney James Sims
noted his ofce would be review the
complaint.
We will approach this complaint
with careful consideration, he
said.

** HOME EVENTS IN BOLD**
Activity Night at BRMS

Students of the middle school enjoying their first
Activity Night of the year. 7th and 8th graders get a
chance to dance, hang out, play sports, and be
social at the Middle School's Activity Nights. The
teachers work the events and use the money for
their class needs or field trips. The 5th and 6th
graders will have their first Activity Night of the year
coming up on November 11th from 4 to 6pm. The
events are for BRMS students only and give them a
chance to be social and have fun in school.
Decorating Pumpkins

Students in Annette Maat's second grade class, at
Riverview Elementary had an opportunity to paint a
small pumpkin. Four young men, Andy Maat, Steve
Maat, Harrison Agan and Kyle Walch volunteered to
help with the project. The students created their
own pumpkin face design. The volunteers helped
trace the face onto the pumpkin so the kids could
paint the face. The students created a wonderful
variety of painted jack-o-lanterns that they are
enjoying as decorations for the classroom.

Spirit Week at BRPS
Even though it was Spirit Week, Logan
and Garrett managed to get in some
quality reading time in the media cen-
ter at BRMS.
This is Jordan and Allieanna
of the 8th grade showing
their best for Hat day of Spirit
Week, students enjoyed the
week of goofy clothes, hats,
and school spirit.
Big Red flew to Riverview
and landed on the roof during
recess so he and Miss Kent
led the students in some spirit
chants...Like...Go Blue/Go
Red and many more.
Riverview enjoyed spirit week and so
many students showed their spirit by
wearing their favorite team shirt,
dressing like a rock star, favorite hat
and crazy hair day.

Crazy Hair at
Brookside
Homecoming Court visited
Brookside during lunch and
recess on Friday.
Brookside students enjoy a game of Friday

22 TRICOUNTYNEWSSHOPPERMONDAY,OCTOBER31,2011
22
In Michigan in 2010 there were 55,867
reported car-deer crashes with 11 mo-
torists killed and 1,277 injured. About
80 percent of all car-deer crashes take
place on two-lane roads between dusk
and dawn. (Of the reported car-deer
accidents Kent County is number one
and Montcalm County is number six in
the states highest accident rate).
What can you do?
Stay aware, awake, alert, and sober.
Remember, safety belts are your best
defense in any collision.
Be alert for deer in spring and fall,
especially at dawn and dusk.
Heed deer crossing and speed limit
signs, particularly on two-lane roads.
If a crash is unavoidable:
Dont swerve!
Brake rmly
Hold on to the steering wheel.
Stay in your lane.
Bring your vehicle to a controlled stop.
We at Hills Body Shop have noticed an increase in deer hits in the month of October through December
and a big surge directly after the end of Daylight Savings, because more people are still on the road at
sunset.
If you have had the misfortune of hitting a deer, Hills Body Shop, Inc. is here to help restore your ve-
hicle to its pre-accident condition. Your insurance company may refer you to one of their preferred
repair facilities. These body shops have an agreement with your insurance company to keep down the
cost of your vehicle repair in exchange for referrals. We believe its not in your best interest to take
your vehicle to these contracted repair shops. We believe safety and quality should come before cost,
whereas these preferred shops seem to put cost before quality and safety. We believe it to be unethi-
cal to cheapen your vehicle repair to save your insurance company money. Youre our customer, not
your insurance companys. Hills Body Shop, Inc. has always and will always provide the nest repairs
available.
For more information about what you can do to avoid a car-deer accident and what to do if you do have
a car-deer accident, please visit our website http://www.hillsbodyshop.com/
