Tarvitz Grung first appeared on the deathworld of St. Helena’s Hold. Tarvitz spent an indeterminable amount of time coming to terms with his new surroundings, mostly in solitude. Tarvits could not understand what had happened and it is thought that in his solitude he may have gone insane in an attempt to accept his fate, for he is recorded to have started integrating with the human population on St. Helena’s Hold and interacting freely with the lower rungs of society. It is thought that Tarvitz must have set about acquiring knowledge of the Imperium and the Emperor and at some point, possibly due to madness, Tarvits must have accepted the Emperor as his own Sigmar as he joined an Imperial cult some months after his first recorded presence.
St. Helena’s Hold
St. Helena’s Hold was originally a Shrine world to the martyr Helena. Located in the Ultima Segmentum, Helena’s Hold was subjected to some of the earliest Tyranid attacks due to its position near Tyran. The planet once had an ecosystem similar to Holy Terra, with a slight increased gravity and alien flora and fauna but after the defence of the world against years of Tyranid splinter fleets and extensive use of devastating chemical weaponry, the planet evolved into a place that was largely inhospitable to human life. The tundra and steppes were turned to grey wastelands and the entire planet was subjected to hyper-acidic cloud bursts on a daily basis. Even the seas turned to acid and corroded large portions of the land. The world became one of death, with less than 3% of its original plant and animal life, all of which were suitable for the acidic environment and were just as deadly. Hundreds of years after the last battles were fought on the planet, a new planetary governor was appointed and he would eventually become the tyrant of the world, appointing himself High Autarch. In early M.40 he announced the world a separate entity to the Imperium of Man. The population of the planet was largely repressed and had absolutely no choice in what happened in their lives but a minority had knowledge of what had happened to the planet at the hands of the High Autarch and remained in their faith to the Emperor. They set up a number of small cults that were able to carry on in secrecy for years. Tarvitz Grung joined one of these cults.
The Cult of the Emperor
The beliefs of the cult that Tarvitz joined had strayed fractionally from the religion preached by the Ecclesiarchy, but they would still be considered loyal and zealous members of the Imperium. Around the time that Tarvitz joined the cult, plans began to be put together in the organisation of a rebellion. Communication between the cults was limited, but they started to grow in popularity with the workers in the acid mines. By order of the High Autarch, Imperial faith was banned but it appealed to the lowly humans who had little or no hope or ambition on Helena’s Hold. Within the Cult of the Emperor, Tarvitz met a woman whose name has been forgotten by history and is thought to have died during the civil war, but not before bearing the son of Tarvitz, who grew up in the company of the cult and was named Havelock. Tarvitz never told his son or wife of his past.
Rebellion and Civil War
When Havelock was fifteen years old, the first acts of violent rebellion occurred and his father Tarvitz is known to be one of the initiators of the conflict. With the element of surprise, the intial battles were won by the loyalists and they were able to continue communication with the rest of the Imperium, letting them know that there were still loyal elements on the planet and the world was in open revolt in an attempt to overthrow its tyrant. Assistance was promised but it would not arrive for nearly three

The Beginning of a great friendship Grung was inducted into the rogue trader’s army soon after.
