Formerly Delhi College of Engineering

From the Desk oF the Vice-chancellor, DtU
With its chequered history now spanning over 70 years Delhi Technological University (formerly Delhi College of Engineering) has carved out for itself a niche position in the arena of engineering and technology universities around the world. The historic decision to upgrade DCE into DTU was taken by the Government of Delhi about two years ago and an Act to this effect has been enacted by the Delhi Vidhan Sabha in July 2009. The upgradation of DCE into a technical university Prof. P. B. Sharma provided the necessary academic and administrative autonomy to empower the Institution to march on the path of academic and research excellence, as also to accelerate the pace of innovations. The conferment of the status of a technological University upon DCE is a major opportunity for all of us in meeting the requirement of highly skilled brainpower for the industries and enterprises in the New Knowledge Age. Further, the output of DTU in respect of research and innovation is expected to impact new knowledge creation and development of new technologies and commodities. DTU, with the brand image of DCE and its glorious past, is poised to create new horizons in the arena of technical education and research in the country. With the upgradation of DCE into DTU, we have now a much greater responsibility and certainly a greater accountability along side with freedom to excel and serve the interest of the talented community, industry and the society. It is also an opportunity to provide an updated and innovated curriculum at par with the best technological universities of the world and emulate the best practices in technical education. As per the DTU Act, Delhi Act 6 of 2009, DTU is a non-affiliating, teaching and research University focusing on “growth with quality”, offering new programs in emerging areas of engineering and technology, ensuring synergy between science and engineering, which will attract the very best and qualified faculty in its fold and contribute effectively to cutting edge technology development and foster world class innovations. “DTU thus aspires to be a leading World Class Technology University, a key node in National and Global Knowledge Network, empowering India with the Wings of Knowledge and Power of Innovations”.

Such an effort when encapsulated with the agile layers of scientific values. the inspiration The inspiration for upgrading Delhi College of Engineering into a Technological University in the NCT of Delhi is derived from the fact that in the new Knowledge Age creation and dissemination of knowledge. we need also to cause seamless integration of science and engineering so that we succeed in creating the power of science and the might of technology together in our institutional campuses. adding strength to each other’s existence and contributing to the growth of interdisciplinary engineering in an environment of scientism. Learning from the international experience it goes without saying that we need to establish future Universities in India where science and technology both could flourish together. especially in the Universities and Institutions imparting professional education. The autonomy here becomes the freedom to excel and the associated accountability ensures a much greater commitment and compliance to high academic standards. Department oF hUmanities

The Department of Humanities at DTU is oriented towards initiating a dialogue between technology and society. This involves a threefold process whereby the students are trained to understand the twenty-first century global economic environment and labour market, creating awareness about changing employment trends and developing good communication skills so that they can articulate themselves effectively on various platforms. A conscious effort is made to sensitize the students towards specific technological need of urban slums, rural areas and the socio-economic impact of engineering projects. The department offers courses in English, Economics and Accountancy to engineering and M.B.A. students. Special attention is given to develop good communication & business skills among the budding engineers. To achieve this goal, classroom learning is constantly updated and supplemented through methods like market survey and analysis, paper presentations, group discussions etc to ensure maximum interaction between the students and faculty members.

students are sensitized towards technological need of urban and rural areas as well as socioeconomic impact of engineering projects.

Academic environment of the department is highly vibrant. Faculty members and students frequently participate and present their papers in national and international seminar and conferences. Expert lectures were organized by the department during last academic year on “Value of Science and Technology Education” and “ Development of Business and Soft Skills among Technical Manpower” on October 26th and November 2nd, 2010 respectively. From academic year 2006-07, full-time and part-time Ph.D. programme has been launched by the department. Fellowships for full-time Ph.D. programme are also available for meritorious students. The department has the necessary expertise available in the following research areas of current interest: • Socio-economic studies • Labour market analysis • Education and skill development The department is in the process of setting up Language Laboratory which will expose the students to TOEFL and GRE model of training and practice. By learning to correct their pronunciation, accent & intonation, students will improve their communication skills and learn variations in English expressions within a shorter time span. Courses like M.Sc. in Economics as well as foreign language like German, French, Japanese, Chinese and Russian have also been proposed for an all round development of the students.
