Miss Reiner’s Room
This week students continued working on refining their prediction skills. Students were introduced to a Story Impression, which was shared with you on Thursday night for homework. Children worked toward making predictions and then confirmed and busted those predictions. The boys and girls worked very hard and are achieving a lot of success. The boys and girls also took their first comprehension quiz this week. I look forward to reviewing their answers and sharing their work with you in next week’s Assessment Folder. Next week we will be comparing and contrasting our three fractured fairytales, discovering realism and fantasy in each story, and taking a look at test taking strategies. ASK YOUR CHILD: Who were the good characters in the story? Who was the villain (or “bad guy”)? What 3 materials did the characters build their houses with? Name the 3 disguises the Magic Shark used to fool the pigs. Why do readers predict? Which fractured fairytale was your favorite and give two reasons why.
Students dove into Unit 2: Adding and Subtracting Whole Numbers these past two weeks. The main topics of Unit 2 are addition and subtraction of whole numbers, with special emphasis on the basic facts and their extension; solution strategies for addition and subtraction number stories; and addition and subtraction computation with multidigit numbers. The four main areas of focus are: To review fact families and number families To review and solve “What’s My Rule?” problems To use diagrams to help solve number stories To review algorithms for adding and subtracting. I anticipate assessing the children on Unit 2 the week of the 27th. There is a possibility that date could be pushed to the following week depending on how well the students grasp the remaining concepts in the unit. I will be posted review material on the Wiki shortly. I will notify the boys and girls when that happens. You can help your child by working on addition and trade first (borrowing) problems at home.
Punctuation Takes a Vacation was the theme for this week. This story, about punctuation vacationing at Take-A-Brake Lake, made learning about punctuation fun! Children broke into groups and created posters for the class that will help us to remember punctuation and when it is used. Ask your child what their poster was about. I hope to post pictures of the posters on our Wiki page after approval from Dr. Garvin. List Makers – Yackity Yacks Sentence Stoppers – Questioners Emotional Us – Time Keepers

Our class read several stories this week about the election and voting process. Children shared their extensive knowledge on the topic and we had some interesting class discussions. We also talked about the things we would do if we were the president. Children had an opportunity to watch a Brain Pop this week and learn about the election from Tim and Moby. You can check out FREE BrainPop election videos with your children. The address is www.brainpop.com. Your children have visited this sites and can help you maneuver around them.
Ask your child how they practiced Fresh Fish Behavior this week.
