WORLD SERIES OFFICE NUMBER (602) 438-0242

MSBL / MABL World Series Spotlight on Joe Maiden (70+ San Diego Padres) Joe Maiden is a winner. Not just on the baseball field. His life has been marked by lofty ideals, hard work, dedication, and achievements. After leaving the Marine Corps in 1966 Joe became a commercial pilot and flew for American Airlines until mandatory retirement 32 years later. He now serves as a consultant for retirees in investment management. And he knows how to give to others. Each year he and a group of ballplayers raise money for charities in a big way. They have presented the Susan G. Komen foundation a check for $83,000, the Wounded Warriors for $107,000, and have worked with a number of former MLB players such as Randy Jones, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken,Jr., and Tony Gwynn with their own charities. This man is all about serving others. Living in San Diego, he enjoys playing baseball year round. From 1994 on Joe has been to every World Series tournament except one when his daughter timed her wedding in October. He played on Berrys teams from 94-98, winning two championships. In 99 he managed the first 60+ division and won it. Then in 03 with the Denver Compadres he won that championship. Again he started the 65+ division and, you guessed it, won the first one. Two years ago, Joe took the title in the inaugural 70+ division, thus winning 5 out of 8 championships since the 60+ division play began. With basically the same core of teammates, Joe has turned down some very talented players in order to keep the great relationships together. His policy is to be competitive, get along with your teammates, and have a good time. Baseball is the best fraternity Ive ever been with. His 2011 team has 25 players on it, and theyve turned down 8-10 more. Seems lots of guys want to be with a winner. Joe has a son (43) with two granddaughters, and a daughter (40) who is an equestrian trainer. His marriage of almost 40 years was ended prematurely to cancer in 2007. The great regret of his life is that he does not have his life partner with him now. Joe was quick to point out, Lifes been very good, but I would (continued on page 2)

Outstanding Weather Greets The Teams For Week 3!

35+ Central Terre Haute Cubs pitcher, Jerry Sillivan delivers a pitch to the plate yesterday during his teams first game against the Utah Rockies at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

Week 3 Gets Off To A Fast Start With 35+ / 45+ / 50+ And 70+ Teams
Pre Game Plate Meeting Very Important Before All MSBL World Series Games
By Tom Prendergast

Its an important part of the game to be sure, the pre-game plate meeting that takes place between the team managers and the umpires. In addition to exchanging lineups and going over ground rules, the other issues that get discussed are sometimes crucial to a teams game strategy. For example, if you are playing in a participation division (Central or Cactus) and have to bat a minimum number of players, its important to know how many other players are on a teams roster for that game. If one team only has 13 players, then the other team has the option of matching that number in their batting order. Teams should not list more players than they have dressed and ready to participate in the game on the lineup card. Make sure that both umpires and the other teams manager know how many players are available to play in that game. Same with any special exemptions for underage players that you received from the National Office before arriving in Arizona. By pointing these players out before the game you will save yourself a phone call from the World Series office later on.
